Donkey Kong Bananza |OT| Red Faction Gorilla

Those big material monsters that swing hammers

If you throw a rock exactly as the hammer hits ground, BAM, disarmed.

Blew my mind that this game has this.

can say you can get all the bananas in each layer with the powers you have.
If it's the one I'm thinking of, there's a shifting platform beneath it? If so you just need to find a nearby source of the bouncing material...

Worked like a charm. Just grab one of those blue dudes like he was a rock and you get a chunk of bouncy stuff.

This game is brilliant

There is no better feeling think of thing you can do and the game allows you do it.

This what good interaction looks in video game.

Been taking my time but this game rules

Just finished the forest layer with the egg hotel and that second Bananza power. Just pure joy and charm throughout, Nintendo nails this kind of thing like no one else in the business

I'm absolutely loving this but the difficulty really lets it down.
It's impossible to enjoy the boss battles and the levels because they are so easy, this would be my favourite platformer if they'd raised the difficulty.
I know it's for kids but everything is so easy that it ruins the flow and game for me, if they had raised the challenge then this would have been on my top five of all time.
didn't they include something like a special word as in Super Mario Wonder?

Played through the tutorial area last night and I was getting some Red Faction vibes off the bat in that while the map destruction was neat, the novelty quickly wore off and it felt like the idea really wasn't going to go anywhere. After playing through the first area tonight, a lot of those fears were tamped down. The opening level is enormous and I like all of the From Software-like ropes you kick down as shortcuts. I love how fluid Donkey Kong's movement is and the depth to his move set. The biggest knock I have on the game right now is how useless the camera can feel if you bore you way underground, but that seems like an incredibly difficult problem to solve, especially when you are trying to hide so much below the surface. The boss designs are giving me Splatoon boss vibes for some reason. Lastly, there is way more story to this game than I expected and it's all a little batshit in the best possible way. Maybe so much is thrown at me since I'm so early in the game.

There's one, I don't think it's as good as I hoped given the quality of the rest of the game. Didn't take me long to beat and the challenges are kind of whatever. I much prefer the
Bananza specific challenges you have to clear in order to unlock the final level. The Zebra one especially is legit amazing.

Overall I'd say it's not nearly as good as After Alterna from Splatoon 3 when it comes to Nintendo's classic final challenge levels.

I guess I'm very close to the end, because.. well:

This entire game is a revival ark for K-Rool? And all of the kremlin' enemies are actually here as well? Damn!

I thought K-Rool himself might show in some Easter-egg, but this is amazing!

Now I have to chase him down, but I'll have to save that for later.

I'm on the fence. Is this game a 10/10? The last DK games I played were DKC 1-3 on SNES.
Convince me guys
Its a 9/10 from me. Slight performance and camera issues, could be a bit harder but its the best "platformer" since Galaxy 2 for me.

If you have a Switch 2 its essential imo.

Anyone else find that they're really struggling to read the text in this game? I thought about it I think the generally white text on top of the super colorful and vibrant environments makes it tough for me to read. All dialogue being in a text box would have been such an easy fix. Not sure why they didn't do this.

Just noticed most non interact-able NPCs have text boxes, but ones you press A to talk to don't. This makes no sense.

37h in, been 100%-ing each level before moving on to the next. it has all been an absolute joy and I've been itching to continue every time I stop.

Unless something goes sideways before the end this is a very easy 10 for me. There are flaws but they all come off as extremely minor relative to what you get here imo.

This game is making me want to play Odyssey again, even though I'm 95% sure that Bananza is a better game.

Playing Odyssey on release in 2017 I thought it was just pure joy and one of the best games I'd ever played. Definitely similar feelings with this one even though I'm 8 years older and more jaded.

It's absolutely massive. Wonder how they came to the idea of let's make a DK game on the scale of our 3d mario/zelda games. It's brilliant to build out their ips, but required a leap of a faith and we don't know if it will be a system seller which S2 needs. I love the game probably my GOTY over E33, even with some easy bosses. I'm only on SL 902.

After DKB, replay Odyssey. I replayed it with my sons (their first time) before DKB came out on S2 and the visual improvements are big in that game and a fun refresh 8 years later.

Did not like Odyssey myself. DKB is so much better.

Just completed the game!

What a wild ride and what an ending sequence..

I shouldn't have doubted these guys, I like this game better than Odyssey, which I adore to begin with. Easy 10/10 from me.

When the mine cart took me down and the location mentioned a Necky, I was so happy when the stupid bird popped out on defeat. That gave me a better "Nostalgia" hit than the Nostalgia Country challenge.

Just finished the Groove Layer (easily one of my favourites, sadly too short) and entered Feast Layer... that bloody Freestyle Bananza City Smash must have been the hardest challenge so far - if you're doing it "normally", as it's also very cheesable lol

I think they expended it more after is it was moved to S2. When you have layers that you can basically do anything with, good chance chance they brought back ideas they had removed back to the table, like they said in the devs round table.

Gonna guess the feast layer prob wasn't part of the S1 game. And the finale prob wouldn't be as grand as what they've done in the final finale.

How good is this game? Nintendo sent me a Switch 2 purchase link I need to use within 3 days. I JUST spend $1,000 on a PS5 Pro, the required disc drive and some games. Part of me feels sick spending so much money on entertainment in such a short period of time. I LOVE the DKC games. Especially Retro Studios' ones. I love N64 platformers and while I can see this game definitely has modern, open game design at its heart, I feel like I see some collectathon platformer in it too. Wanting to play this game sooner than later has me leaning towards getting the Switch 2.

I can only give my own opinion but I LOOOOVE this game! Other than Xenoblade series one of my favourite Nintendo games has been Kid Icarus Uprising and now Donkey Kong Bananza on that list.

Its soooo fucking good....its peak Nintendo.

After having finished this I'm very curious about the direction of the next 3D Mario. I'd be kind of surprised if they give us another 'collectathon'. This game feels like the Mario Odyssey sequel we never got on Switch (1) in a lot of ways.

This clearly felt like more of an adventure game, which I really liked

Love the direction of having the collectibles tied to actual tangible benefits in the game, and love having clothing with attribute bonuses

Same, it sounds like a pretty minor change on paper but really adds a LOT to the way the collectibles and general gameplay loop work imo. That change alone is a huge improvement over Mario Odyssey for me.

I swear to god, this game has inserted itself into my dreams. I'm wrecking shit up in my dreams.

I love me some E33, but this is easily my game of the year.

I don't know man. It really seems like in this game, if there's a will, there's a way. I'm seeing people pull off crazy move combinations in order to reach crazy areas, without accessing powers and stuff.

Yeah I don't think there's any way the next 3D Mario follows the Odyssey formula. Bananza did such a fantastic job with it that it'd feel redundant to have a third game using the same template. I'm pretty sure Mario will go full open world (I can already see the wailing) and will expand on the Bowser's Fury formula with the same kind of globally active system as giant Bowser rampaging through the map but more varied and with more interesting effects.

Whatever they do though I'm sure it'll be a monumental game, I got an entirely new level of appreciation for EPD Tokyo. I used to think they were talented of course but Bananza cemented them as the top development studio in the entire industry as far as I'm concerned. Absolute geniuses.

Yeah I've spent way too long just fucking around on some of the layers. Think I'll just power through to the end then come back at a later date if or when I fancy it.
To quote myself. This didn't work out.

Still fucking around on the Tempest level, I'll be still playing it next year at this rate. This fucking game lol.

I really like that layer, for some reason it reminds me a lot of Insomniac's Spyro games.
