Donkey Kong Bananza |OT| Red Faction Gorilla

I really hope the collection aspect is toned down in the next Mario. The costumes were a nice touch but 880 moons was a bit more than a bit too much.
I'm kind of doubting the next 3D Mario will be in the style of Odyssey after having played this. Bananza is definitely the evolution (sequel) of that format/style.

I can see more of a 3D World/Bowser's Fury approach.

3D World is my least favorite 3D Mario and Fury was an interesting experiment that I'd like to see them evolve, but if I had my druthers I'd like to see something more traditional. I do wonder when we'll even see it though and I'd guess we are years away.

Same for me. It's my least favorite 3D Mario game. Nintendo seem to divide the games into 'linear' and 'exploration' though, so I'd guess the next one might lean more to the linear side, although I still think it'll go the open-world route.

I don't think it's very far away personally. There's no way they prioritized DK over their biggest mascot franchise. Wouldn't be surprised if it launches next year.

I don't think we'll ever see a linear 3D Mario again, at least not anytime soon. You've got to remember that the temporary shift in design philosophy from the sandbox structure of 64 and Sunshine to exceedingly more linear obstacle course levels starting with Galaxy came from that particular era in Nintendo's history where their main audience wasn't even casuals but non-gamers, people who either never played a game or were lapsed gamers who hadn't touched a gamepad since the 80s.

Back then Miyamoto was obsessed with the fact that 3D Mario was more complex and less accessible than the 2D sidescrollers and sales figures reflected this with the best selling 3D Mario selling a third of the best selling 2D one. This is why 3D Mario at this time almost felt like a hybrid with far more limited movement options, a run button, more basic goals etc.

Now with the Switch things are completely different, the audience is far more traditional, with players who're familiar with classic genres like 3D collectathons. The sales reflect that change with Odyssey vastly outselling Wonder and being the first 3D entry to sell as much as the most popular 2D games from the past. All of this to say I don't see Nintendo trying to simplify the formula again because they're worried their audience wouldn't understand how to do a long jump or something. In fact everything points to the opposite with Bowser's Fury and Bananza being weirder, more experimental and mechanically richer than pretty much every game that came before. I fully expect the next 3D Mario to do some genuinely crazy stuff gameplay and structure wise.

And yeah I think we'll see it soon, maybe even at the end of the year for a release next year.

like... is there a fast way to farm banandium chips other than going into an enemy challenge and just repeating it over and over?

all that I am missing for 100% is 2 skills that each cost 5 skill points... but already have all the normal bananas, so the only way to get additional ones is farming chips.

🙃
but my urge to 100% everything forces me to continue...
Man this scares me, I've absolutely not been getting all bananas cause I kinda feel like ive already filled out most of the upgrades (how many more can there be?!) and I've only collected about 300 bananas being at layer 1200 getting what I assume is my last bananza?

Same, although I don't think any of the two lanes limit that possibility.

I'm thinking they'll go fully open world and build on what they tried out in Bowser's Fury. Only reason I'm saying "linear" is because of their categorization, where they put 3D World (although that was before Bowser's Fury existed).

I don't know what kind of gameplay it would be, but I just feel like the next mainline Mario will be called Super Mario 3D Galaxy. Seems logical, especially if Galaxy 2 gets a re-release this year.

I predict this too and can't see it coming out after 2026. They wouldn't let DK delay a mario game. Big N is really starting to understand and build out their open world design with the mario games mentioned and the zeldas botw, totk, EoW.

Gameplay will always be a pleasant surprise with nintendo, but what I'm curious about is how it relates to Odyssey and Bananza's story, which were more fleshed out than previous marios and connected together through
New Donk City.
Add to that the movies, and nintendo wants some congruency with their characters. Where does the next 3D mario (
likely also a sequel to DKB
) go storywise?

I hope in the movie DK's personality is closer to Bananza instead on in Mario movie....In the movie it felt like that version DK spends too much time in the mirror and gloating.

Finally crossed the finish line here. Admittedly, I don't have any special love for DK in general, historically speaking. After this game - I'm definitely a fan. Awesome game with very few low points as far as I'm concerned. Enjoying going in the post-game and some new options therein. Not sure if I'll keep tinkering with it or not, but finished the game with a little over 500 Bananas. I had 4 hearts and barely any upgrades (outside of stuff like punch strength) until the final boss and after failing about 3 times, I used my 60+ skill points and dumped them into health and a couple of bananza upgrades. Went down in one go after that, so probably could have accomplished it, but due to the long run and how far you have to travel if you quit the game (in case my daughter was trying to play), I just wanted it to be over with at that point. Good stuff though, strongly recommend to anyone on the fence, awesome game. Have to give Nintendo large applause on this one.

Where is the best place to get gold. I'm well short of the amount needed for my last bananas

Every layer has special gold challenge to get gold as much as you can within a time limit.

Put gold tie and do those special gold challenges.

This game became a slog. All records and 777 Bananas are mine.

But I'm only on 961 bananas with the chips to buy 7 more. So getting to 1000 is going to take a long time.

I'll probably tackle it over some weeks as I don't see it being a fun grind.

Only on world 5 but I do love this game. I have the same feeling I had with Odyssey where everytime I finish a level, I have the desire to go back to previous worlds to collect more bananas and find stuff I've missed. It's astonishing how fun 3D platformers can still be and how I really miss this genre.

Take time to think about this - it took one of the best development teams in the world (Tokyo EPD) 7 years to make this fucking game. I wonder how many prototypes they scrapped along the way!

What makes collectables so much more fun in DKB compare to other platforms is one just act of finding one is fun thanks to its fun destruction gameplay and two is EVERY collectibles are useful even a simple gold.

Edit: Also after putting 50 hours finishing this game, I just find out you can parry.
How can you parry? With standard DK!?

Seeing as I'm 99% done with this and have a voucher that isn't likely to last for the 2026 MP4 release date. Should I get Mario odyssey or Kirby and it's new DLC?

12 to go.

100% Done. Was fun, there is a lot of content but I don't advise going for anything but completion of the all the main bananas.

Not that far in, but really enjoying it so far. Definitely the killer app that Mario Kart World ( which isn't bad) wasn't.
100% how I feel. I know I'm not the target for MK World, but very underwhelming 80 USD experience for me. May never touch it again. Donkey Kong is exactly what I would have wanted day 1, but I'm sure they had a reason. Now I'm just sad there isn't a lot of software coming I'm excited about for what feels like a while, but I know bombs will drop eventually.

Ok I'm still on that first area (Lagoon) and so far I'm pretty blown away. My one question is am I eventually going to be able to see where every banana and fossil is on the map or will I have to constantly be using the sonar?

Some treasure chest reveal location of fossils or Bananas on the map.

Aside from the chests mentioned above, pretty much stuck with sonar. Just make sure you upgrade it to the max, you end up with better range than you might think.

Game is, indeed, pretty great! Hope you keep loving it!

Once you narrow it down to less remaining, finding chests could be very helpful (since as Danjin44 Danjin44 said, it marks a location to the exact) and they spawn pretty frequently when digging and you could use clothes to up that chance further, so collecting everything shouldn't be too bad in the end. Not speaking from personal experience on that though.

Ok yeah I've found plenty of maps so far. So there's no equivalent of lets say, the blue toad from Odyssey that would mark moons on your map if you paid him?

Thanks guys. The game is straight nasty. Last night I discovered challenge rooms for the first time. Each night I'm discovering something new :messenger_grinning:

You can buy banana and fossil maps from the Stuff shops.

EDIT: But come to think of it, pretty sure those shops don't appear until the layer after Lagoon.

If you haven't played it, Mario Odyssey for sure. Incredible game.

I'm on world 5 and I'm having a hard time deciding what to invest my skill points in. I've got Terrain Level 4 on punching power, health power ups, and some other small things that don't seem to help much.

Is there any general skills you've found the most useful that I should focus on? The game keeps recommending stuff like Melon Juice upgrades and Kong Armor for transformations…. Don't seem very useful to me currently.

always go for special abilities and completely ignore anything health related as the game is so easy, you'll never need it (well... until the post game maybe)

I'd always look which of the abilities of the Bananza transformations are the most useful and level those first. like the charge punch of the gorilla.

Later layer's enemies hit kinda hard though.

that's only an issue until you have enough beds to get 3 or 4 extra hearts anyway I'd say.

I didn't buy a single heart powerup until the post game when I started maxing all power ups.

Honestly, I feel like that never really changes, hate to say. There was only one bananza power set I felt compelled to upgrade otherwise just punch strength and basic move expansion.
