Mind you I'm 30 fucking years old and I work as a systems engineer. I expect people in my age group to have a fucking passable vocabulary. We were talking about the possible fine the guy would get for the 205 MPH speeding ticket. I guessed that he would pay in total somewhere between 2k and 5k depending. I said there were a litany of laws he broke and including bail and gettting his bike out of impound and various other fines that the judge will throw on him.

I get this one girl to write back litany who why do you use words that no one can understand? This is really one of my pet peeves. I'm like if you don't know the word ask me or for chirst sakes look it up on www.dictionary.com .

LOL I always get anoyed by poople like you that feel your vocabulary means something. I've always thought using a word that someone in your target audience dosen't understand shows your complete lack of intellect, making you the inferior one.

I never really cared about Clare. There was a point where she was coming together to make her really normal. I would have loved to see her become the normal in this group but, they screwed that. But, the Rico situation I mean damn, what can you do homie?

You would have a point if I wasn't talking to fucking engineers.

Yes, my friends are morons. Im so much more advanced then some of them it annoys me half the time.

Im not talking booksmart though. I suck at math and my study skills are next to fucking retarded. My grades, except for history because I find it incredibly interesting, have always been poor. However, Im just incredibly in-tune with the world. The head on my shoulders is solid. Im mature beyond many my ages. I see poeple my age and older I hold no respect for because they are high-strung idiotic assholes, lack common sense, unable to control their temper. I hate poeple like that.

I think Rico and his wife and kids made a great family. But he crossed every line possible when he gave her $5,000. WTF Rico??

I loved the episode when his wife confronted her. :D :D :D

I live in Minnesota. My friends judge each other's intellect by how many NASCAR stickers you have in the rear windshield of your 4x4 pickup truck.

More is better. :(

Why would you hate them for a fault like that? Then they're not your friends. This thread will now focus on why you shit-talk behind their backs, hater! heh, unless that you mean "casual acquaintance" instead of "friend." In that case, nevermind.

uh, since when did engineers as a group suddenly get a good grasp of the english language? Sure there are some that have a good grasp, but plenty that do not.

I think not knowing the word "litany," followed by questioning another person's use of said word, qualifies an individual for "absolutely fucking retarded with no vocabulary" status. But that's just me. It would be one thing if he went thesaurus-happy, but this is basic english we're talking about here.

So you're saying that a language ought to be stripped down to contain only the words which the lowest common denominator can understand?

Oops, sorry -- that the "lowest common number-on-the-bottom-of-a-fraction" can understand?

I never said any such thing? I said you should use language that fits your target audience and if you not smart enough to do this maybe your not as intellectual as you think.

I don't think you get it. The fact that you consider yourself intellectually superior -- against all available evidence, mind you -- is hilarious.

Exactly how do you measure "maturity," again?

I sleep on my stomach and he comes up on the bed and takes his paw and puts it gently on my lips and makes his nails come out just enough to make me feel it. Then when I don't pet him, he circles around and puts his whole body in a ball and lays on my face. :( This is done every night, several times. :(

For some strange reason I don't see the use of the word litany as a sign of being part of the braintrust of the intellectual super elite.

Exactly so by that same logic not knowing it is not a sign of not being a member of braintrust of the intellectual super elite.

Im not smart, I dont claim to be. I even said I wasnt. But intelligence can be reflected in maturity and appearance, which i have tons of despite what you might think. Im very mature for my age, a decent person, and incredibly fun person to be with because im not an asshole unlike so many other people I know. I have friends who are just so immature or really hot-headed and lack basic common sense and I find it disturbing and often annoying. I could go on and on about the things they do that would baffle any normal person. But they're my friends, we at least share some common interest and have been together since before we evolved into the people we are today.

Thats what I ment..

Adn compared to SOME my friends, I AM intellectual superior. They lack basic grade school spelling and math skills in one case even at 25 years of age. *sigh*

If you don't know anything about your target audience, then you have to assume lowest common denominator, right? I mean, Tommie assumed that his college-educated audience would know what "litany" meant, and look what happened...

I understand perfectly well the importance of crafting a message to an audience, and I have to use that skill daily. However, it is not possible to convey all possible messages in an arbitrarily limited subset of a language. Complex thoughts may very well require complex language to be expressed. Further, there is something to be said for elegance and specificity in language. What if "litany" is the word choice with the most economy for a sentence? What if "litany" has exactly the right connotative meaning, or best captures the intended tone?

If you're trying to explain to an aircraft passenger how to open an emergency exit in Shakespearean English, then something is broken. But if I'm making a subtle-but-important point at a meeting, and someone doesn't get it because they don't have a command of the language, that's THEIR bad, not mine.

You just called a lot of people absolutely f-in retarted then (including me). I have a general idea of what litany means, but depending on my relationship with that co-worker, if they were spouting out all these big words all the time in notes, I wouldn't have any qualms about sending a note like that one person sent.

Plus, I wasn't really questioning this specific case. Just saying just because you are an engineer, does not mean you have a good grasp of english. I've seen engineers get 750 on SAT math, and 450 on verbal.

Oh, and my guess this not the first time a word that was not understood has been thrown around. Considering the reaction of the original poster to the email, my guess is he throws out bigger words than litany somewhat frequently.

Being a engineer does not grant you a good grasp of English. I don't know every word in the English language but, if I don't know the word I will go to dictionary.com and find out what it means. Especially before I question someone's use of a word. If this was an excercise in showing how smart I am you would have a point. But, that word fit the discussion better than "list".

If you consider litany to be a "big word," I really just don't know what to say to you.

Furthermore, it's not like www.dictionary.com is hard to use.

Wasn't really trying to say litany was a big word (although I see how my statement could be interpreted that way). I was simply trying to point a few things with my posts in this page.

A: Engineers do not necessarily have english skills.

B: In certain cases, I could see someone sending out a note to someone that used difficult words all the time (not necessarily this specific word/case)

C: Based on the note sent, and the reaction of the initial poster, my guess is this is not the first time the initial poster used words that his target audience did not understand, and would think he used bigger words in the past.

But thanks for chiming in and saying that anyone that does not understand litany is a totally f-in retard, and beneath communicated with.
