Doom (2016) PC performance thread

Hmmm...so I got Doom and Something seems to be very wrong....have no clue what it is.

im running gtx 1070
i5 2500k overclocked to 4.5ghz
16gb ram

anyways, NO matter whether I have it at low graphics settings or Ultra graphic settings..

my framerate stays the same which is jumping from 21fps - 30fps....
but constantly sub 20s....WTF!?

I was having the same issues as well

Using the GeForce Auto Optimization setting seemed to fix it for me, now I'm flying at 80-100 FPS

I saw some video where a guy said he had to close realtek audio in task manager, then Doom worked like normal....

I didn't have any realtek audio running, but I decided to close a few random programs in task manager guessing and hoping that would fix it and then all of a sudden Doom started running as it should...

weird....Doom is the only game that has made me do this. Overwatch, deus ex, hitman, battlefield 1, etc all run fine without me having to do that.

Can you edit the in-game settings via an .ini file or something?

I can't change the game's in-game settings to 1440p windowed mode.

Run the game
Open the console using the tilde key (~)
Type r_mode
Press tab key
Available resolutions and their corresponding numbers will be shown in the console
Type r_mode 20 (where 20 is the number corresponding to the resolution you want)
Press enter
Type r_fullscreen 0
Press enter
To apply the changes, type vid_restart and press enter

So i finally got Doom and tried it with Vulkan (i5-3570, gtx 970) - what a bummer, it gives me slight stutter when turning camera and such even if ingame framerate/frametime counter does not show any spikes.. Even worse i don't get higher fps, so i switch back to OpenGL after all.
Also because SMAA is too jaggy and TSAA is too blurry on 1080p i want to use DSR, but i need to crank down some settings, which are most performance hogs? Shadows, reflections?

Damn, I haven't played in a long time, holding out to see if they fixed this yet and I guess not.

So much for the Vulkan savior.

Since my last post I haven't had issues with it black screening in a while, might be because I'm making sure to go back to the menu before exiting or something was resolved. Using Vulkan I was getting a pretty solid 144FPS with adaptive vsync set in the NVIDIA control panel at least until I got to
...Hell....
. It didn't drop below 100 though, maybe 120 the minimum I noticed though the Steam overlay counter isn't as fast to react as the in game one, I turned that stuff off. Haven't gone further than that yet.

I'm still on 376.09, I see there's been a couple updates since but I'm no longer using GE so... Eh.

Been wondering the same

They seem to have fixed crashing for most people either through recent updates or through Vulkan. I haven't had a single crash under Vulkan.

Is everyone getting weird physics issues when running at over 60fps? For example, it's very easy to get stuck on slightly raised geometry such as some doorways and flooring, whereas there are no problems when running locked at 60fps. The biggest offender might be the doorways on Res Ops - I seem to constantly get stuck on them and have to jump over the 2cm raised door frame.

I'm getting stuck now and then, yeah. Haven't tried playing in 60 though, but it wouldn't be worth the trade-off anyway.

never left the stone age
Hot diggity dam, Ultra with Shadows set one tick lower is almost a completely locked 60, mostly around 70-110 FPS on an ancient 280X and FX6300 is suuuper good, Vulkan is great.

That said, I've noticed that alt tabbing in full-screen or switching between windowed and full screen can cause the framerate to tank HARD, like down to 30 FPS unless I bring textures to Medium, which just screams memory leak to me?

Changing settings can also cause this issue so sometimes I have to quit and restart just for the frames to go up, if I don't do any of the above it just continues to run smooth as butter though and luckily I found the perfect settings, but still, it was annoying when tweaking.

Also how come the initial starting room has the worst framerate in the entire game so far? It's kinda weird.

I got a new 1440p 144hz G-Sync monitor a couple days ago and decided last night to start this game back up to see how it runs now on my rig (3570K@4.4 and a 970). Using Vulkan with pretty much all settings maxed (minus Nightmare textures, etc) I was getting ~100 fps or higher at 1080p with my old display. Last night the game now seems to be locked at 60 regardless of what area I'm in or how many enemies etc. Is that some issue with G-Sync since I have v-sync off in-game but on in Nvidia control panel?

I also had my first black screen freeze up last night too. The music kept playing but I couldn't see anything or exit out. Had to run task manager to close the game and Steam.

DOOM seems to often set the display to 60 Hz at which point of course, you will be limited to 60 fps in G-Sync + Vsync mode.
I usually use the display's controls to set the refresh rate to 144 Hz. If your display has this feature, I'd recommend that solution. There are other workarounds, such as creating a custom resolution, but I'll only go into that if necessary.

In past idtech games, you could use r_displayrefresh 144 and vid_restart in the console, but I'm not certain that works in this game.

The display itself is already set to 144hz, along with the display settings in Windows and NCP. It's not a huge deal but I'd still like to find out why it's locking it to 60.

Are you using a frame limiter somewhere?
It does seem that others have reported this problem.
I would try the following
-disable and re-enable G-Sync in the NVCP then launch the game
-in game, use alt+enter to toggle windowed mode

If this has no effect, you can try a custom resolution. You must disable DSR in NVCP general settings to create the resolution.
Go to resolution settings in NVCP, there should be a custom resolution button.
Create a resolution of 2559x1440 and set refresh rate to your preferred rate. The resolution should then be available in game. Choosing this should force the refresh rate you want.

I had the same issue when I started playing. I managed to get it working in the end, but I'm not sure what actually did it.

In game settings on max (Vulkan), in borderless windowed mode, with these driver settings.

The game is weird though. I can play in 144fps for hours and sometimes when a cutscenes starts the game just locks to 60 all of a sudden. It's also locked to 60 in the menus.

This is by design. It's because game logic is tied to frame rate in some manner. To make sure nothing weird happens during scripted scenes, the engine limits to 16.7ms. Somewhere there's probably some maths that would not behave nicely with rates above 60 Hz and they want to make sure the game works without having to test with every frame rate possible. It's smart. The game returns to unlocked rate as soon as the section or scene is over.

What I mean is the gameplay stays at 60fps after the cutscene. Have to restart the game after the cutscene in order to get 60fps+.

And sometimes the very same cutscene is not locked at 60, so it's definitely something weird going on.

Oh right. I've never seen that. I'm using OpenGL, perhaps it's a bug in the Vulkan renderer?

I do have a 144hz frame limit set with RTSS but it wasn't running when I started the game. I may try switching to OpenGL and see if it runs any differently.

If my other suggestions don't solve it for you, then I've seen at least one report online that updating GPU drivers was a solution. Good luck. The game is lovely at high fps and hertz.

I do need to update my drivers. I uninstalled GFE and I haven't updated to a new driver in a couple months at least.

Does anyone know if there is a way to force fullscreen mode? I have my desktop set to run at 120hz in Nvidia Control Panel to avoid flickering (dual-monitor setup with a 144hz Gsync monitor) but also have preferred refresh rate set to highest available in 3D settings, but that only applies to fullscreen applications.

r_fullscreen 1

You can set it in the console (~) after the game has loaded.

Set it as a launch option in Steam ( +r_fullscreen 1 ).

Or you can put it at the end of your doom cfg file (C:\Users\<user>\Saved Games\id Software\DOOM\base\DOOMConfig.cfg) as r_fullscreen "1"

I've tried the launch option before and it didn't work. Just copied it into the cfg file and it didn't work either. I can tell it's not working because my monitor still reports that it's running at 120 hz, and I can very easily alt-tab out of the game.

Well then alt+enter is toggle full screen / windowed mode.

I don't think the game supports exclusive fullscreen. If you have a Twitter account, you can try asking Tiago Sousa about it.

On a different note, is there a way to cheat and choose any level through the command prompt? I was pretty far in and my save was corrupted after a BSOD and unrecoverable!

Type in listcmds and poke through what the game spits out. If need be, you can use cheats to cheese through the game until you reach the point at which you lost your save.
