"By and large, this console take on Doom 3 definitely appears to stand up to the PC original, though obviously in a somewhat lower resolution than the PC version is capable of"

"One example we were given is that the game's opening sequence--a long walk through a calm outer space base--has been shorted down to about two minutes or so, which should get players into the gunning action much quicker."

"Perhaps the most interesting thing about Doom 3 is that it will contain a two-player cooperative mode, which wasn't present in the PC original. This mode will be playable over system link or Xbox Live, and should allow for some new tactics, like having one player shine the light on an enemy while the other blows it away."

I'm not entirely sold on the game, but I'm very tempted to pre-order the LE for the Doom I & II ports.
Why not just enjoy them on PC with the help of a lovely source port?

Doom II is still hard as shit. Dark10x and I started a jDoom powered coop session this week and after level 6 we started getting owned pretty fucking bad. Level 9 was hilarious in how much shit they threw at us.

Our issue stemmed fromt he fact that we were playing on Hard difficulty, which we had under-estimated, and the fact that when you die all you start with is the fucking pistol. You can go six levels collecting an arsenal and once you die -BOOM- it's gone.

Then you start back in the pit with chaingun guys overhead, an arachnotron lighting everything up, and a coupla pain elementals spewing lost souls everywhere... and all you've got is the worst pistol in FPS gaming. Goddamn ridiculous.

Peeps may want the Xbox ports of the earlier versions for the "social" factor. 4 player split screen deathmatch / splitscreen coop.

MINE!!!

Plus the old doom games.... SOLD!!!

:lol

Yup, when that happened to me in single player I just reloaded from a previous save - there was no way you could get anywhere with just the pistol after respawning.

Nahh, Quake 2's blaster pistol was much, much worse.
Least it had unlimited ammo. We used it as a flashlight.

Speaking of Q2, we went through a chunk of that together the same day. The whole time we were commenting on how the game was no goddamn challenge and how the enemies just couldn't respond to circle strafing. Turns out we had played for three+ hours on Easy. See there's no way to set the diffculty for coop directly. Whatever single player difficulty had last been called is what you get. I 'spose I had booted an easy game while checking my controls and then we wasted an afternoon.

Ona side note, Quake 2 has horrible sound effects. Flat out annoyaing and terrible. The soundtrack was always rockin' (we played with music off, D-O-H!) but then you got these captured marines bumbling around and they won't shut up. You can hear these saps half across a military compound and they are just endlessly repeating "It hurts. Kill me now." and (I swear to god) bleating like a sheep!
Bwaaaaaah!

I've been enjoying the source ports for years, but they all have their +'s and -'s. I'm interested to see whether they try to spice up the originals or if they go for a more authentic feel in the ports. Split-screen wouldn't hurt, either.
