DOOM Gameplay Demo (E3 2015)

If they'd boost the movement speed just a little bit I would be happy. Alpha was cool and I want definitely more.
bring on Doomquake

I'm eager to see the rest of the art, I love a lot of what I've seen. (Cacaodemon, Revenant, Lost Soul, Hell Knight, Baron of Hell) But it's hard to not think some of it looks a tad inconsistent. I'm sure I'll warm up to all of it since I'm so excited about the game as a whole. But the look of the new Cyberdemon is kinda hard to swallow. Same with the Mancubus which looks more alien that demon to me.

That cyberdemon design :( they should have gone with bovine horns, rather than what appear to be moose horns.

Also, imps look like aliens now, not demons

/nitpick.

the imps could use some more sharp teeth i think and the Cyber Demon design looks like it came out of diablo

Barons of Hell have one of the best designs in this game:

They were in the gameplay video too, but you couldn't see them easily even in 1080p.

If this doesn't do well, I can see this being the final nail for id software.

As a game developer, yes, but I'd imagine that Zenimax will keep the studio on life support for the sake of engine development even if the game bombs. Developing an engine for internal use has high upfront costs, but this is money that is effectively returned over time by way of there being no licensing fees, and id Tech 6 -- being a super-charged id Tech 5 as opposed to the id Tech 6 Carmack was envisioning almost a decade ago -- would have to be fairly mature at this point.

Keep in mind that id tech is being developed by ex-Crytek guys in Frankfurt. When John Carmack left the studio, as a final "Fuck you" to Zenimax, he took over half the engine team with him to Oculus.

Yeah, I'm aware of that. My point is that even if Doom underperforming signals the end of id Software the game developer, it'd undoubtedly still exist as id Software the technology developer.

Yeah, I'm aware of that.

Sorry, I wasn't clear. I should have said that in that scenario Zenimax would probably shut just down the Dallas studio and keep the engine satellite studio going, since it's closer to their other internal developers. I doubt id will be shut down now, though. id's pretty small at the moment, and after Battlecry was put on indefinite hold, I imagine Battlecry Studios are probably assisting id along with Escalation and Certain Affinity, and whatever art house they're using.

Yeah, I know what you were getting at, which is why I edited in a bit of clarification. We're on the same page.

Haha, I just jumped the gun!

I wonder how big the engine changes are under the hood? It's been quite a tumultuous time for id since they shipped Rage. I really, really want to see what Dishonored 2 looks like in action - we still haven't seen any gameplay or screenshots.

PBR is mentioned in the Game Informer article:

Some new info from the article:

<snip>
- As suspected, idTech 6 appears to be very similar to idTech 5 but with a completely new PBR renderer
</snip>

Multi-GPU support would be nice, but given id Tech 5 games don't support such configurations and multi-GPU support in general is quite hit-or-miss these days, I'm keeping my expectations low. And, yeah, I can't wait to see in-game footage of Dishonored 2. There's very little info on what the Void engine actually is, but the consensus seems to be that it's an early fork of id Tech 6.

There is a screenshot of Lost Soul in GI and its amazing, but I think scans are not allowed here. its a little like classic Dooms, but older (!!) and wilder! lol

Yeah, you catch a glimpse of Spectre / Pinky too, but it's so quick. I liked what I saw of it, though you can't really make out all of it.
Yeah they were in gameplay too! we can see them very hard, but I love their designs in those milliseconds! :D

I love that it's a mix between the classic Hell Knight/Baron of hell and Doom 3 Hell Knight
Exactly!

I can confirm from reading the Game Informer article that there IS a starting pistol in the game; looks like the Halo 1 pistol and half the arsenal from BLOPS 3 had a lovechild.

And the Cacodemons ARE actually a very vibrant red with glowing green eyes; however sometimes the (very strong) dynamic lighting can hide this fact.

There also seems to be player upgrades you can find in the game (secret areas, yuss!). One of these upgrades actually boosts the player's movement speed every time he performs a glory kill (the speed stacks after every kill).

Nooooooooooooow I see where id was going with the Glory Kill system.

I'm very interested to hear more on the engine. It's weird to me to think that IdTech6 is just an upgraded version of IdTech5. It seems like IdTech5 wasn't all that worth it in the long run. Didn't the megatexture technology prevent the games using it from supporting normal mapping or dynamic lighting?

Virtual texturing part of it didn't, but the baking light into an albedo texture did. ;)

IdTech6 seems to be quite bit different from what idtech5 was, I expect graphics side to be mostly rewritten.

For this, I am grateful.

I also imagine it will support 60hz+ unlike pos idtech5

Looks amazing, plenty of colour!

I don't know why people expect pcx colour palettes these days, but the Cacodemon is plenty red in those GI pics and the Lost Soul looks like it came from The Evil Dead, which is AWESOME!

nope, lol

judging from the caco recolor, they seem to be listening to our concerns

I don't think there's been a recolor on the actual character, its just a better screenshot showing it in more neutral lighting conditions than pisshell. Hopefully that's a more common look than the initial batch of screenshots, the monsters in this new one are looking pretty good.

Got goosebumps from that original music. For some mindless FPS killing looks like fun.

Hope people don't expect much more than a shooter.

i think its satisfactory either way.

Dammit! when is that BETA?!?!?

iDtech 5 impressed me a lot on console last gen because performance that good was so rare, especially in a semi open world setting, but the move to this gen and what I've heard from the PC community makes me very glad that 6 is moving in a smarter direction. Both Wolfenstein and Evil Within suffered technically due to 5, which reminded me of Japanese engines tooled specifically for a single game and nothing else. I just hope performance is as smooth in the long run.

Fully expecting reviews to average out in the 7.5/10 range

"Just a shooter" etc

It'll prob be my game of the year but I'm all in for a game where you shoot things in the face for 10 hours, occasionally punching and chainsawing them in the face as well

If by "smarter direction" you mean getting rid of s/w VTs and rely on the h/w ones which are basically supported by all DX11+ videocards nowadays then sure, it moves in a "smarter direction". Note that there were no h/w VTs back when the engine was created. Not sure if this qualifies as "stupid direction".

I don't think that they'll stop using virtual texturing now after they've started in Tech5. H/w implementation should be a lot less intrusive and prone to issues though. All modern engines are already using h/w VTs in some way or form.

Is this the same as PRTs (Partially Resident Textures)? I recall AMD advertising this capability on their cards before RAGE even came out.

PRTs are an extention/enhancement to VirtualTextures. John Carmack said (before he left id) that DOOM would use PRTs (id Tech 6's main tech was probably done by this point with Tiago Sousa stepping in to fix the rendering tech).

Well, kinda. Rage was released in Autumn of 2011 and AMD's PRT tech was released with Tahiti in late 2011. The engine's feature set was stabilized at least a year prior to this but what's even more important is that the proper API support for this feature didn't arrive until late 2013. So there was essentially no way to use the feature in Rage plus the h/w support was basically non-existent till GCN and Kepler got some measurable market penetration.

They really couldn't have made the Baron much cooler. I like the glowing eyes and the weird beard thingy he's got going on.

Also...I guess the Arc Cannon will be in single-player? It wasn't on the weapon wheel in the E3, but it's showing up in all these new screenshots. So I'm curious how that gun will be handled.

*Gauss Cannon. And, from what I'm seeing, it very well might be. If I were to guess, it's gonna be 8-10 shots from the Gauss Cannon to take down a Cyberdemon and about 4-5 with the BFG.

I think my biggest problem is how chunky and beefy everything looks... reminds me of things like Gears of War and Unreal Tournament 3. I kinda hate that visual style.
