Dota 2 Beta Thread: [Brewmaster]

Next week:

We were planning on a big update today, but because of the downtime on the servers we'll have to push the update to next week. We'll have more info in the coming days.

(with no info coming at all of course)

It actually kinda sounds they are preparing for open beta. But they are still sending invites as of a few days ago so it's hard to tell. Maybe in 2/3 weeks once the test client is working and all the servers are ready.

But then again you can most likely change that to 2/3 months..

Also I tried Ursa 2 times now, wow. He's one of the easiest heroes I've played. Maybe I was just lucky in those 2 games but still, as soon as I had a decent level I would seriously kill people in seconds with a few swipes. I made the mistake of going Phase boots first before vlads though. So I waited a bit longer for Roshan. But yeah, fun to play.

Server down on the 14th?! How about those who don't celebrate V-Day!??

Predicting 3 heroes for next week's update. Plus the replay option for SEA servers. And pls......Mac client....

My game just wen't from this:

One of the longest games I've had playing dota, and one of the most confusing as to who would win.

Seeing people buy linkens against Lucifer always makes me smile, just means I shift queue e then r.

Honestly didn't know what to buy after heart/radiance/ac, was considering daedalus but I thought in the end that a dom/satanic would help me more.

#thisiswhyyoupush

Ganks and teamfights open opportunities to push, the game is decided by push. Nevar forget!
Unfortunately there is sometimes a point where there is a team that is 15+ kills ahead and everyone is 4-5 levels higher than your team. But then again that usually is because your team has no coordination.

But yes, always push when you can to get closer to winning. Lost many a teamfight only to get our base stomped and just as many times took advantage of a (near-)team wipe followed by a push even when we were down.

Happy ending, too. Waddled back to base on my sliver of HP and picked up a Blink Dagger.

True, there are definitely circumstances when you shouldn't push, but they're fewer than most people think.

Some days ago I was invited to take part in the beta. I've never played DOTA before and have never played any MOBA title. I have seen videos of the tournament, so I know the very basic. The thing is, there's a Learn section, but when I go there and I choose my character, nothing happens. Is the Learn section not implemented? I'd like to get the basics before I go into the game and I screw my team.

Going to take a break from Dota 2 just like I am taking a break from TF2. Seriously can't stand idiots on my team. I know I am not the one to speak about this, since I have a little over 1 month playing this stupid game, but at least I am not being a total pile of sh*t every match.

Learn section is just for viewing the spells and basic stats for each hero. If you want to practice, go to the play tab, click on private, type in a random password and create a lobby. Then in the lobby settings check the "put bots in empty slots" box and prepare your anus.

Remind me to never again go non-carry in practice mode. I could cry blood.

Wow that was sick.

Also this is my first post ever. I enjoyed that so much that it prompted my first post after having an account for six days now.
Awesome! And welcome!

We need to buff more people up so we can get all the juniors.

A transition based approach.

Solo mid (because we had no other mid): bottle -> arcane -> aghanim -> daedelus.

Works quite well, she hits like a truck and is deceptively strong. So long as I survived the initial assault (SB kept charging me) I could clean up 2-3 kills per fight easy.

I want to test Skadi on her but it's so hard to build.

Yeah, it definitely would have had a far different outcome without VS there. 4-1 trade all told, the swap and the kill on Huskar set it all in motion. And the replay is definitely still watchable (until next week, at least). It was a really good game for our team, great coordination and we had Con on Bounty Hunter if it went late (Had a Manta Style, BKB, Orchid, Vanguard, and 1,530 gold in the bank when we won it). 42 and a half minutes to take it out.

If I wasn't already hopelessly addicted, games like these would most assuredly sink the claws in for good.

Okay. Thanks.

I get owned even by the bots in this game. I don't even dare to try online.
Probably already answered, but is there a hero that is good for beginners and a general strategy on what to buy, where to go, what to level?

Please be gentle :(

I stopped being a lurker this week and have already seen two or three people asking this here, shouldn't we have like a post on the first page that helps out noobs?

Anyway, here are some links from reddit, playdota and youtube:
http://www.playdota.com/guides/welcome-to-dota-you-suck (by purge, you should read that when you've got the time)

http://www.dota2reference.com/ (in case you want to quickly check some hero/item)

Reddit's Hero Discussion of the Day (the guys that used to make these quit and someone else is doing it but I'm not sure how he's indexing it. Anyway you should read the commentaries, on the early ones shred_kid makes some good remarks)

http://www.gosugamers.net/dota/members/Wilco/Forum/0 (Wilco, from reddit, makes a tl;dr of a hero per day and he claims it can be found on this link. You could also use this but i'm not sure it would work as reddit's search is off right now)

http://www.youtube.com/user/PurgeGamers/ (Everything in there can be of some use. Look at the playlists and make sure to watch the coaching ones. One more recent where he talks about trilanes also include a "how to pull")

Plus anything else about a hero you can find on the dota2 wiki

Good luck :)

Brutal for everyone but dragon knight, it does pure damage and has a massive range, best bet is to hide in minions as much as possible.
Then he gets forcestaff and rushes right into your face. Yesterday I made a thread on reddit asking why pudge/VS couldn't use Blink Dagger and most people answered BECAUSE IT WOULD BE OP.

edit:
Speaking of reddit some guy posted "What I have learned after 1000 games of Dota 2" and said the game NEED a concede option.

I find this funny since you guys were talking about a comeback. What do you think about it, after playing such a game? You'd rather, as he said, "have the hundreds of hours back from waiting out lost games than the enjoyment I got from those few exciting comeback games" or is the comeback chance worth it?

I hated conceding when I played HoN. I figure it's a game, why not just play it out. May as well try to win.

Pretty much what happens is your team puts up the concede vote, I would vote no and then they would either: a) sit in the fountain, or b) put up the vote kick to get me out of the game so they could concede.

Now I'm not saying there shouldn't be a concede option in Dota 2, because I think it can be useful those few times that the opposing team clearly has 2 sets of raxes destroyed and just refuses to end the game. If your team has a remote chance, why not just play it out? 99% of us aren't getting paid to play the game and I feel that with HoN, many players were quick to throw up the concede vote even before you had lost your first rax.

So, I'm apparently the last person on the planet who didn't know what Dota is. First I'd ever heard of it was on the GAF Minecraft server a while back when people were talking about it. I asked what Dota was, only to be met by the entire server asking with what sounded like shock (and a little surprised pity) how I could have gone my life without having ever played Dota.

So, after noticing that Dota 2 had appeared on my games list on Steam, I figured I could finally see what all the fuss was about. This was probably the first game I went into entirely blind. I didn't even know what kind of game it was (RTS, FPS, etc) until I joined the first game. Apparently it's some sort of strange single-unit RTS team deathmatch.. thing.

So, having had maybe half an hour's experience with the game, my two cents:

- The game needs a tutorial... badly. It's nice to see that there's going to be one eventually, but as-is, it's a little impenetrable when you're trying to learn what the heck's going on in the middle of a match. I spent most of the time wandering around aimlessly and dying. I ended up picking some big guy with an axe (who, I believe, was named "Axe"), walking up to someone who glowed red when I moused over them, hacking at them a couple times, then getting killed in a hit or two. After finally noticing the little shop button in the lower corner, I bought some items that I thought would help my chances, but I still ended up dying almost immediately in every confrontation (even with the seemingly passive dinosaurs I came across at one point).

- It... well... seems kind of dull. Maybe things will click with me at some point if I ever figure out wtf I'm doing, but even when I was trying to hang around teammates (if only to give the enemy someone else to attack), it seemed to just be a game of "watch your character slowly walk towards the enemy, everybody attacks everybody else, the winner walks away, repeat". Now, I know that's basically what competitive games are on some level or another, but it just wasn't really grabbing me.

- I really wouldn't mind if the game allowed me to zoom out more than it currently does. It allows me to zoom in more for some reason, but I can't zoom out to actually see what's coming at me until it's a few feet away.

- Where can I find the server browser? It got kind of annoying waiting for 8 minutes while the game searched for players.

All in all, I don't even know if I like the game or not yet. It didn't grab me initially, but I can see where the could be depth there once you figure out what the heck's going on. I didn't even bother finishing the match I was in, since I figured my team would be better served by someone who knew what they were doing. I've definitely got to see about tracking down a guide to the game, though.
