Any other useful tips. I'm very used to LoL and it's hard to transition as a result.

The thing I noticed that you constantly do is charge ahead into the wilds by yourself; this will get your neck snapped in a flash, as you noticed. I do this too if I'm not careful. Depending on the character you play, you have to really dance with the enemy and make that you're not vulnerable.

Other than that, you just have to really know the characters, what they can do, and how to properly use your character. On top of that, figure out how to properly last hit and deny (not that I'm good at it either). It does take a little time and you have to dive into the game mechanics and figure out what works. Try some practice sessions.

if you're coming from league, you have to get used to actually have good positioning. there is no free flash or ghost for every hero. you have to always be in a good position or you're going to die.

My friend comes from league and he is having trouble with the camera not being locked to his champion at all times. He also has trouble with mana usage in comparison to LoL and now he thinks it's a bad game.

From an accessibility standpoint DOTA is probably up there as one of the worst games ever.

I don't quite understand what you mean. Could you explain?

The way the control works and the way the game really just throws you into it without anything makes the game sort of hard at first. Think of it something like Demon's or Dark Souls. I've played 2 games so far and it's vastly different from LoL but it has its own quirks. I think that the game punishes you very hard for messing up and rewards you a lot for doing well and for people that just jump right into it without any notice or anything like that, there is a steep learning curve and barrier.

Thanks. I tried Venomancer and I love him so much more. Died a lot but I like his character style. I think i'll try other characters as I play more games. Thanks for the tips.

I'm tired tonight. Tomorrow I will try to do a small writeup on going from LoL to DOTA.

I'll play a couple more games tomorrow and write my thoughts on LoL and this game. I've never played DOTA Vanilla so if anyone can correct me on if this is a direct port from the original would be very enlightening.

So you mean all of LOL gaf has to be like me? Includes the ones who I know play HON and DOTA too.

*Smirk*

I went from LoL to Dota 2 without much of a problem. U:

Then again, I knew what to expect, as I watched almost all of The International, and learned more than enough to get me started.

What a good gear build for faceless? I've been enjoying playing him but I feel really weak/squishy late game. Been mostly going off the recommended getting lifestealing gear.

Also been playing Bloodseeker and hearing that SaY aren't the way to go with him?

Suggested items for Bloodseeker are a disgrace. I usually get stout shield and quelling blade + salve in the beginning. You can survive harass pretty ok with bloodbath and then work your way to boots and poor my shield if you feel like you need it. But Radiance is my way to do it. After that I finish my boots and usually go for BKB so I don't get permastunned.
After that if the game isn't over Desolator or MKB or Butterfly is always a solid choice.

Don't remember Voids suggested items but if you feel like he is weak lategame it's only because you are doing something wrong in the early game >_> Void is strong as hell but he needs a lot of farm, and I mean a lot. MoM is good on him and I think most people tend to get BF + the standard dps gear lategame. Don't really play him that much.

Build as you see fit:
Vanguard
Linkens
Battlefury
Manta Style
Mask of Madness (only if you're a GOD DAMN BAWSS)
Skull Basher (only to troll)
Butterfly (evasion stacks with backtrack)
Eye of Skadi (only if you're doing spectacular)

Took a bit of googling to find this so I'll post it here for anyone else (namely, Davidion).

To tweak DOTA2 using a text file, create a plaint text file called autoexec.cfg. The extention must be .cfg and not .txt. You can do this by saving the file as autoexec.cfg in Notepad.

Move the file to C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common\dota 2 beta\dota\cfg.

A list of tweaks can be found here, I would not recommend simply copy pasting everything because it changes a lot of keybinds and such. To auto join the NeoGAF chat channel, add chat_join "NeoGAF" somewhere in there.

For Faceless I suggest Vanguard/agility treads/mask of madness/daedalus

You're a scholar and a gentleman.

Doesn't stack with his bash, meaning that the item's bash effect is disabled on him. So mega trolling only.

81~ hours sunk. Can't stop. Won't stop.

Last game of the night was fun, played Crystal Maiden and was teamed with EazyB and Trasher (Halogaf would be familiar with them). It was a very close game, we held a small tower advantage for most of it but the enemy team forayed as far as doing damage to our middle lane T3 tower. Our Antimage eventually got enough farm to start turning the tide, and we were able to slow the enemy team's Weaver and Huskar such that they weren't establishing a position of dominance. Was level 24 by the end of it, which should indicate just how even and drawn out this battle was.

Was there supposed to be a link here?

I've played quite a bit with the HoN-GAF people here as well. :)

Yeah, I was ridiculously farmed with AM at the end there. I tried a different build than I normally do with him. Usually I like to get some life-leach, but I had S and Y and couldn't remember if DotA counted that as an orb effect. So I just decided to skip the life-leach and built for more damage lol.

Does anyone know if you can use life-leach and S and Y together?

Does DotA 2 also let you toggle between orb effects?

I wish I could find a listing of all the differences (from HoN that is). =/

It did in DOTA, not sure if they ever changed that like with the basher thing.

SnY only counts as an orb on the attacks when the slow procs I believe, so you'll get the other orb the rest of the time. The real joke here is that AM has an amazing orb to being with.

If you want lifesteal on AM, get Vlad's Offering, which is an aura so it stacks with mana break just fine.

(Don't get Vlad's on AM)

lol derp forgot that counted. Yeah I completely forgot how to build AM. I need to play with Procarbine so he can like remind me and stuff. But he doesn't like me anymore and refuses to play with me. :(

Edit: Well it's a good thing I didn't get life-steal then. I guess I didn't build him all that bad after all lol. Yange proc is just too good for killing runners IMO.

And, Pro, I'm also talking like way way end game here too. It was almost getting to the point where I needed some sort of life-leach, but we ended up raxxing them. I had been 25 for a bit already.

Going from HoN to DOTA reminds me of how much the DOTA community hates Sange and Yasha.

I just don't see it as often as I do Frostburn. Hell, I remember getting Frostburn on many heroes in HoN, but I haven't built Sange and Yasha once yet.

Also, a long time ago, SNY and BFury were considered noob bait items. It feels like some of that mentality is still alive, though BFury is widely accepted now.

Can't hate on Bfury.

Basher is a far better item on AM than sange/sange and yasha for many reasons, one of which is because you must have a Manta on your AM and thus getting a SnY is a waste of money since they don't stack. Also life steal on AM has to be Vlad's because otherwise it won't work with his ridiculously overpowered (even moreso with a manta...192 mana gone in one attack wtf) orb.

The problem with SNY lies with the fact that there are very few heroes that the item is truly useful for, but people are instead getting it singularly for the movement speed or extra hp or dps or maim etc. and therefore people use it as a panacea item on many str and agi heroes since they see some benefit rather than a complete benefit. They are unwilling to explore the much better alternative items already in the game for their heroes.

Wait so Vlads does work on him?

And is Manta the same thing as Diffusal? I can't remember.

When Sange and Yasha (or Mjolnir) procs, they override other orb effects. So while you can't trigger chain lightning/maim/mana burn on the same attack, you can in fact stack them all and not lose any significant amount of effectiveness.

Manta (illusions) is Geometer's Bane.
Diffusal (mana burn) is Nullfire.

You used to make Manta from Diffusal but they were split into two different item trees a while ago.

Ah, that's right. Had completely forgotten about that actually.

Vlad's Offering provides a lifesteal aura so it works, just as SK's aura would work with AM.

Manta and Diffusal are different items, Manta makes 2 images of your hero.

LoL is like infinite mana for everyone.

For one thing, Sange is a proc slow while Frostbrand is a guaranteed slow on hit. Also, Frostburn can be split later on into Geometer's and Frostwolf's Skull. Sange isn't used in Skadi, and I don't think it's used in any at all.

Just want to give you guys a heads up, IceFrog changed SnY so that it no longer counts as an orb effect, meaning it stacks with every other orb no matter what.

Keep it up, Botolf! I've already seen significant improvements in your play since you first started.

well damn I just tried a few of these items and felt like a god. Thanks!

BKB is also nice to pick up with void if you are up against many stunners or disablers. Nothing is worse than hitting a good void ulti and only miss lion who stuns and then hex you. And with BKB you'll be able to engage a teamfight without ulti if you have a decent team that is ready to support you.

It's hard to keep track of what they changed now that they don't need to use the WC3 engine anymore x_x
