Dota 2 Beta Thread: [Brewmaster]

They are probably saying burning up to 400 mana at a time from the team kills them when the team fight comes about. It really hurts people like Tide or Sk too.

If we put things into perspective, for the most part Tide and SK will be hiding in the forest out of the enemy team's sight in preparing for their ultimates; being hit by Tornado/EMP should happen rarely at most.

But people do get caught out of position. Anyway the mana burn if landed by a good invoker can be devastating.

So what's the general consensus on Nerubian Assassin's viability? I've not heard much about him lately, he just seems to be dismissed without much comment competitively.

one question guys, how do you exactly get in the beta? i know some got it randomly in the xmas sale but is there another way?
im not begging for invites, im just really confused as how you get to be in the beta.

That he is amazing if he can be used to his potential, but the excessive amount of micro needed to use him to that potential prevents anybody from using him. Also that its hard to find what his best role in a team would be.

Goto the Dota 2 page in steam, and do the Hardware servery, its how 90% of us got keys.

NA is one of the least used heroes, but I think he has an awesome set of abilities.

I think the issues with him being micro intensive are overplayed, you don't even have to use his bugs and he still is an awesome hero, using the bugs burrowed as rune wards or just having them follow you everywhere you go to add to your damage is not that hard to do. The silence is just an extra bonus.

He has a pretty great AoE stun, and his ultimate gives him the potential to instakill most heroes, especially in combination with a dagon and/or ethereal blade and his mana burn.

I think his problem is that he doesn't fit neatly into any team role in the metagame. He is not really a late game carry, he is melee, but he needs his ult to be useful, so you want him in a solo lane, which sucks as melee, he is not all that great with push strats or against push strats, so that takes him out of a huge percentage of games.

Really the issue is that his main role is shutting down carries and strong casters in the mid game, but at the higher level the other team will support their carry very well or just shut down NA completely in the early lane phase by putting a ranged hero with low int in his lane.

So basically, good hero, but doesn't fit a niche as neatly on a team as some other heroes do. Combine that with him being one of the harder heroes to play well, and he is just never played.

Always felt he was a pub stomp type hero that really is pretty easy to counter competitively but does well against teams that have no coherence.

So do you think 6.73 changes will have much of an impact on his competitive appeal, or will he still more or less fall short?

Thanks for the posts, by the way.

The ult cooldown change will help a bit
(especially at level 1), means he will be able to gank lanes more often. the mana burn change doesn't hurt, but doesn't do all that much.

I don't know how much the cooldown reductions will really help though, as it seems he is more often mana constrained rather than CD constrained early game.

The 6.73 change I'm most excited about is the morphling buff. I <3 morphling :D

5 extra agility will make it so much easier to last hit early game.

The change already went into effect you can try it now :D

Apparently I have been using Pudge wrong all this time. I had no idea I could shift queue Dismember mid-hook, now I have to get the muscle memory down for doing that.

Also, I am never soloing mid when Milkman is on the other team. No matter who I am I cannot do jack shit against him and it's incredibly frustrating.

Just out of curiosity for future reference, not that I'll be partaking in them anymore, but are GAF IH's serious mode, casual, or do they simply vary between the two depending on who is playing?

They vary per game and per person. Some people will just be having fun while others are super trying harding; in the same game.
Mostly, its serious enough that people get salty.

Killcams in Dota 2. Yet another nice feature from LoL that helps explain to players how they died.

This is the one good thing to come out of LoL, so useful!

LoL came up with Killcams? I think not.

I do my best to troll the other team or mine.

Was the first game in the Genre to have them.

Also, looking into it, orb of venom working with Sticky Napalm may be an intended fix for Dota 2. The 33/40 Damage cap in Dota 1 is to keep Radiance from working. Is there someplace where Icefrog confirms this is unintended?

*All damage from Batrider's attacks, items and skills is amplified, except for damage from Radiance.

Why did no one tell me Bat Rider was so much fun?!?!?!

Just went 4/3/19 for my first ever BR run. It's always nice to know that you are the ganker and the support with the Urn :P

I'm glad I've also been randoming heroes for the past three games. I'm actually using other classes that are not Lich, Riki, or Drow :3

Edit: After reading Kirby's post, I realized I didn't buy Orb of Venom :o

Invoker is the most fun hero in the game. Also his difficulty is way overstated, i find Shadow Fiend a lot harder and i never had a bad game with invoker yet.

I hate you and everything you stand for.

I hate people who throw the game just standing in the spawn, so frustating. At least with leavers the team can quit the game.

Seems they've added the ability to sell items from your stash, don't remember seeing it in any changelog.

I'm new to the genre and thought that all those comments about russian players were an exaggeration or some type of inside joke, but the last games with russian players have been certainly "interesting". I wish I undestood russian to know what some of them were saying, seemed like really colorful swearing.

Don't forget the Brazilians and Malaysians

Yes.

Real response: Dota has harsher mechanics than LoL and there are fewer safety nets that players can rely on (no flash, weaker towers, etc)

People just notice bad Russians as they speak with a different alphabet.

is it weird that im good/decent at LoL but am completely and totally awful at DOTA?

Should just play Pudge, I hear his Hook is easy to land if you play LoL.

I believe Q+E builds were somewhat popular too... At some point in time... The idea being to get Q and E to level 4 for double forge spirits (using sun strike to assist on kills with sidelanes early on, cold snap for harassing on your own lane), then max Wex from that point on for teamfight crowd control. Not sure how he really is balance-wise these days, but I think Alacrity used to be pretty brokenly good for just one point of Wex early on. Seems the initial damage + mana cost have been nerfed since the last time I played.

PS. It's a long ass time since I last played dota before this jan (2+ years).

This is what I run as invoker, cold snap and forge spirits is basically a guaranteed kill, especially if there is any other form of stun on the lane you gank(Except against heroes with a windwalk/blink), you get wex after the two forge spirits so you can disarm/meatball/emp, tornado is great, but a euls works just as well if you need it early(and farming as invoker is super easy...)

That's a real shame because you're a cool guy to play with :/ That inhouse last night where SWAG CHOSE ANTIMAGE and HYUNA CHOSE NATURE'S PROPHET (both on the same team) followed up by Lich and Tidehunter was the most tryhard inhouse game I've ever played. I think the fact that those heroes were present is what caused us to take the game more seriously than usual. When I see those first two characters, my immediate thought is, "Oh wow they really want to win this game," and that makes me want to play hard to make sure they don't win. I'm sure swift and 1.09 felt the same.

Some people get a lot more frustrated with losing than others do, though. Try not to let one or two people turn you off from playing with everyone else.

So I just played my first 4 or 5 games of any Dota game ever over the last couple of days.

Learning curve is extended by lack of a tutorial mode. I have no idea what the fuck to make of:

1.) the way the Shop system is organized or how upgrades work.

2.) how to add alerts to the map

3.) what is going on with that extra sack of items. It wasn't until the 3rd game that I realized that items bought from the shop weren't added to my skills until after I pushed "Grab All". I've just never seen that mechanic before and had no idea.

#1 is obviously the most critical problem I'm having. Of the 5, my best game was like 9/10/19. but most have been like 1-2 kills, primarily because of unfamiliarity with the characters or how to use the shop. If anyone can provide some insight or maybe a video or something, I'd be quite grateful.

Regarding #3, I'm just lost about some things. Sometimes I'll buy an item and instead I see a different item in the extended sack and a "recipe" or something for the item I thought I bought. then later, the item I bought appears in the sack and I can add it. is that how it's supposed to work sometimes or am I doing something wrong?

That's it for me so far. So far, I've had some success with Thor (in terms of kills). I've only tried Thor, Chen and Venomancer. Thor's special moves just feel like cheating. I've sniped a few people from across the map that had an inch of health and I felt dirty. Chen I just can't feel. Venomancer, I started to figure out after the second game with him.

any advice or encouragement will be greatly appreciated.

fwiw, my experience in the Action RTS genre is limited to about 25 total games between Rise of Immortals, League of Legends and now Dota2. All over the last 30 days.

if anyone would like to add a lowly nooblet, i'm at http://www.steamcommunity.com/id/ajreynol

edit: Zeus, not Thor. ty Togglesworth. lol
