You want to harass as much as you can to let your laning partner reap in the rewards. Your passive should be but a slight nuisance to your farming partner. I believe once it's level 3 it stop HP regeneration enough so that they want to be as far away as possible from you.
I know this is the general idea of support, but I have to say I'm godawful when it comes to harass. I was playing as Lich one game with Skeleton King against Morphling and Mirana and was around half health or less for the majority of the laning phase. Against range characters it's so hard to get in to hit them without drawing the attention of the creeps or getting a few ranged shots from them in return. And since I'm not farming, I can't afford the health regen to mitigate the counter harassment.
Also, I'm at the skill level were Skeleton King was absolutely useless. He got almost no last hits because he wouldn't approach the creep wave and I'll be damned if I ever saw him toss out a stun the entire game. Thankfully, he meandered off somewhere else, leaving me in the top lane alone where I was able to quickly level and grab a fast mek due to scoring three solo kills with some really well placed Chain Frosts. That skill is fantastic if you get two heroes and one or two creeps in it and the team kept rotating their players up to top lane whenever I scored a kill so I just kept repeating the same trick of killing most the creep wave then "running away" to draw them together.
Necrolyte is one the latest hard carries in the game and very good pusher, he is not picked very often in comptetetive play because of the HUGE bloodstone nerf. Back in the days, a necrolyte with a lot of charges with a bloodstone was almost unkillable and a top pick/ban.
The problem with playing necrolyte is that 95% of dotaplayers dont know wtf he is supposed to do, he is a carry and is supposed to farm, just like a anti-mage or faceless void. There are so many that thinks he is a support just like crystal maiden or VS, dont litsen to them that is just bullshit, they will rage at you for not buying courier/wards and prevents you from farming which is annoying.
More amazing advice.
Thanks, this is information that is really helpful but not really obvious in the game. There isn't a lot of time in the matchmaking countdown, so I just look at the little role titles Valve gave the heroes when I'm picking a hero and once I had time to really look over his skills, I couldn't help but feel he was not a very good support. And given his infrequency for higher level play, I can't even remember the last time he was in a game outside of the International so I had no idea for general skill building or items on him.
Just wanted to thank you for the great insight into the character. The knowledge in the community is fantastic and I am really looking forward to the time when Valve will have the systems in place so the less educated of us can get some excellent mentoring.
The one thing I really liked about Necrolyte was his fewer skills which does allow me to focus on the flow of a teamfight more and the abilities of my items. My second bot game I played as Shadow Shaman with blink dagger and black king bar and there's just so much to remember and click in order to initiate properly with wards/hexes/shackles and what have you.
Thankfully, I'm at the skill level were people don't really rage. I practically fed as a Furion (with Razor... so it wasn't entirely my fault!) in a bottom lane and the only thing our Kunkka (who had any real kills on my team) said at the end of the game was "don't die, it makes the enemies too strong."
So I've started playing this recently and after three games I still don't have a single kill. Got five assists though...
On a positive note, I have yet to be verbally assaulted, so I'm pretty optimistic.
I know that feeling. I find actually securing kills really difficult too. It's so disheartening to see the enemy just walk away with a smidgeon of health left time and time again. I too have yet to receive the famous Dota community treatment, but I can only assume it's because we're in the beginner matchmaking pool.
