Dota 2 Beta Thread V: Real Talk Strikes Back [Tutorials]

I want to get into Dota but after the little tutorial I'm struggling. The camera seems really wonky and I just can't stand last-hitting in these MOBA games.

Is the Merlini/Godz commentary kinda shakey in Dota TV for anyone else? I can listen to the other commentary fine but their's seems to be having some latency issues.

I'm so bad at this game! I always liked Dota back before Allstars but was never good at it. I'm trying to get halfway-okay, I know it takes time, there's just so many heroes and items to memorize, it's very overwhelming. Just gotta give it time and learn the different heroes I guess.

camera was weird for me at first coming from Heroes of newerth

After the tutorial make a bot game with 0 bots and just play by yourself working on just running around

Last hitting is different based on EVERY hero so that will come with practing that hero and even after 1000 hours i can last hit but i still miss a TON and if someone on the other team is denying im even worse

Teamup to match the wolf with the set. Wolf looks decent, might have to see it in motion, set is eurghh. Hoodies are lame.

Nice to see Legolas' wife is making dota items. Perfect match

Hit DotaGaf!

Just played some solo queue and felt exactly like the guy in the op.

Also, I'd probably put Treant and Kotl in defensive support, but oh well.

Except KoTL actually doesn't have any escape mech, nor a stun, just lots of damage output with illuminate. Proper warding and aggresive play will shut down a KoTL unless he's laning with a hero(s) with strong synergy with him. (PL, DK, Naga) On the other hand, if you're lane is properly abusing the free mana and huge aoe dmg from kotl, you'll always be the aggressor, spamming nukes to shut down the enemy lane.

Also I wouldn't put treant in support at all, as he's really level dependent and can help all your lanes with living armor. (his only real contribution anyways) Stick em in a solo lane instead.

Last hitting is so integral to dota - even moreso with denies, that you better learn to like it. I think you should wait for Blizzard DotA or try smite or something.

I don't use them at all for games, but at work I use them almost every day. They helped quell the headaches from being in front of bright screens.
Cant you just run f.lux permanently?

or create a colour setting for a yellow hue

or turn down the brightness

In case anyone was wondering if I was kidding

Maybe I'm missing the exact definition of a 'defensive support' here, but I would think of these two heroes of exactly fitting that role. You choose Kotl in order to lane support your carry early game, his blast being used to push back the opposing team's heroes and in the late game, he is generally used simply for push/counter push. I guess he can go either way, but since there is a line drawn, I would suggest that he is much more defensive due to his lack of initiating abilities as a support and his utility as an anti push hero.

Treant only requires levels in reality, not being particularly item dependent and most good Treants generally get solo farm and rush a Mek. The best use of the hero in my opinion is in a defensive trilane, getting farm in order to rush a Mek or possibly a Necrobook for mid game push; but mainly in order to support your suicide and mid using living armour. I would classify this as a support role, despite giving him farm, and the defensive role comes in due to living armour being able to heal towers/buildings.

Either way, it's not a big deal, just putting forward my reasoning.

Is there a trade thread or do we do it here? I got an extra broodmother taunt. Anyone want to trade for the dancing Nature's Prophet taunt?

dunno, it makes them a big target atleast for me. Doom is godawful without armor and bloodseeker has low hp and no innate defenses.

I'm a big fan of rushing AC on doom, it solves a lot of his problems.
Definitely agree, especially if Platemail is your first component from it. Goes a long way to plug your main vulnerability in the early to midgame, less time spent worrying about being glassy, more time just fighting.

This Na'Vi vs EG game

So many turn arounds

Holy SHIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIT

Man DotA is the most exciting game to watch. Nothing like watching a perfect ambush come to fruition

I never see any builds with Veil of Discord. Seems like it would be a great situational pickup on a character like Puck. Blink in, veil, silence, ult, orb out... Dunno why it never gets picked up.

Go back to Smite, Nad.
Jk, it took me forever to not be terrible at Dota. Oh what am I saying, I'm 250 hours in and I'm still terrible.

Weird item. I think it's good for a support to pick it up, drop it down as soon as the fight starts and then you instantly have the advantage; especially if there's an AC in play as well. Puck would be an interesting choice, I might pick it up next time I play him. Have picked up on SK before to decent results, but it doesn't really fit into his build too well, since once you get arcanes/blink you're generally better off getting a Shivas for the extra damage or a BKB so you don't get stunned out of your ulti.
