Dota 2 Beta Thread V: Real Talk Strikes Back [Tutorials]

I've been chat banned a few times (nothing racist or sexist) I understand what valve is trying to do. However, I feel there is a disconnect between punishing a reaction to poor play and not the poor play itself.

Last night I had a game where a team of three got tired of playing after 45 minutes. They started to feed so the game will end. I called them morons repeatedly. I have little to no doubt that they reported me. So while I may not be banned from chat when I log in tonight I have to imagine that with my history it certainly is not going to help. Also as others have mentioned if I am banned it will hurt my future teammates more than anyone else. They can spin the numbers as they like, but I'm not sure how affective they have been in solving any of the issues.

Speaking on the first part only, bad play isn't and shouldn't be against the rules.

harassing and calling people morons won't suddenly make them play better

But hey trench kotl you know we could use some wards and mek instead of you rushing heart first. We know you need some extra hp, but uh we can't wait 40 minutes for you to get an item that you can't even use since you are not a tank. Theorycraft only works to a certain extent and yes the dumbass that wrote that guide is also a moron.

So say that... Letting someone know what they're doing wrong is better than insulting them.

I totally agree, but this isn't a discussion among educated and well meaning people. It's a freaking Dota2 game. People almost never listen when you call them out on their shitty play/ ideas/strategies...

Trust me I've tried.
It's a never ending story in the life of the solo queuer. (I've tried and still keep trying to help others)

Join up with a GAF stack and keep away from the solo grind...

Yea, I can see it being frustrating but I'll still never feel sorry for the guy that got chat banned for cussing a teammate out.

God, its like they are watching me on Steam

Well different people got different ways of venting their frustration. I think "moron" is pretty mild stuff compared to the shit storms that most people unleash on eachother when something goes wrong...

But to imply they are justified in what they did? Because the person played badly? Seems childish, if their way of venting that insignificant anger is making other people feel like shit, they should probably get that checked out.

Pull through, Vici! Gotta get those compendium predictions.

They should all be banned then, with harsher bans served to harsher insults.

Players don't have an obligation to be good at the game, but we do have an obligation to be decent human beings. (and, in general, those who wish to actually teach something should also understand that tossing in insults will not increase the likelihood of the lesson being learned- even if rational discourse wouldn't have gotten there in the first place- the opposite effect is much more likely to result)

It's a team game, you have an obligation to your team to try your best. It's not hard to take 2 mins out of your day and look up a basic build, or follow one in game.

I don't even feel that's true, although it would certainly be nice. In any case, even if they do owe the game something, no amount of (non-intentional) poor play justifies asshole behavior.

The top rated Bounty Hunter guide suggests Battlefury. I didn't even realize what I was doing until it was almost done :sob

My team had no other carries really so it wasn't a horribly bad item, but it was still bad.

Most of them aren't advising you to buy heart for kotl. I'm just talking bare minimum here, thats all.

and so what if I want to buy heart on Keeper? I've built Dagon on Keeper before...

If non-standard builds were reportable then BoT Tinker would have never existed. We should be encouraging experimentation, even if they're doing things out of a lack of experience, rather than actually attempting to make a new meta.

I've decided I'm just going to pick Slardar every time there is a Riki/Drow/Sniper picked in any pub match. It's fun watching them melt after you get a bit of farm and a blink dagger. My biggest complaint is that he seems a bit hard to farm up, even if he's not that item dependent. Is getting a battlefury for him worth it in any way?

I do honestly consider building the Bfury if I'm really going to have to carry the game as BH, just because Battlefury + Jinada + A farmed Bounty Hunter is pretty brutal in a teamfight. Why its part of the default item build or why anyone would recommend it in a guide is beyond me though.

I've played around 100 games of dota and am looking for a few people around my skill level to play with. I'm east coast and my steam id is ace8095.

If players enter into a game with an understanding of the standard roles heroes perform, I'm guessing it's going to be assumed the kotl will be supporting, unless you've come to sort of agreement beforehand with your team. While I like experimentation, you should still have some boundaries in terms of playing within your role and farm level so you don't screw over the team. (Assuming you are earnestly trying to experiment for better performance and not just greedily going for whatever you want, be it dagon 5 or heart)

I suck so bad at this game :/ everytime I think I'm improving I go up against a well coordinated team and get owned. Why does it seem like every hero is better than your own? :L

I need to just stick to one, I can't decide who though. I like drow/riki.. is that bad?

So I'm invested in an hour and you don't know how to play. Amazing.
edit: oops you read a blind-leading-the-blind "guide"

Don't play team games maybe? Use a premade team?

Drow's good, Riki loses a lot of use if the enemy teams knows to get detection.

How many games have you played? Because although learning your first one or two dozen or so games on one hero is perhaps a good idea (mine was Zeus) beyond that point you really shouldn't stick to one, you should watch who the enemy picks, watch who your teammates pick, and figure out what role your team needs (support, carry, initiator, etc)

I've played 40 games but I feel like I'm no better than when I was on one.

EDIT: I think my problem has been not sticking to one at the start, so I still don;t fully have a grasp of the game.

Well, its that or 'hey can u buy wards', 'need wards plz', 'omfg wards'.

I dunno, maybe just call them a moron and abandon.

Then come to a forum to let everyone know how unfair it is that you got chat banned and this total asshole that didn't know to buy wards deserved it.

Hm, want to send me your Steam ID? I'm bored at the moment, I'll look up some of your games and see if I can give you any pointers

You are. Try watching a friend at his first game and you'll see how much stuff you know compared to him.

To get a good grasp of the game you just need to play. Sticking to one hero can even be a problem, you will know how he/she/it works, but you won't know the matchups. I'd suggest to choose a small pool of heroes and pick from it, according to what the team needs. And usually, what a team needs is supports and stuns.

I've actually been building MoM on troll lately and its goddamn hilarious.

Lol, I'll have to try it if I get troll again.

I actually think MoM is a really underrated item. Everyone talks about how the active is dangerous in team fights, but the thing is you don't actually have to use it all the time. You can still use it when farming, pushing and ganking when you need to burst down a single target. The extra damage output is really huge. I made MoM on Luna once to see how fast I could clear the jungle and it seemed pretty legit to me. Although I guess like Vlads you miss out on the satanic late game.

Yeah, I took down a rax in about two seconds with MoM and Troll Ult active, it was beautiful

Dammit ViCi. YOU WERE THE CHOSEN ONE!

Spectre new Morphling? (Not nearly as good as Morphling in his prime, but still - works kind of similarly.)

At least I'll still be right when LGD takes 1st, even though I had intended to change that at the last minute.

I think the biggest issue is to learn while in game makes everyone else's experience worse, and trying to coach up a player via chat during the game is close to impossible if you are already behind the eight ball due to inexperienced play. Once you realize that is necessary the feeding of the other team has produced a game/environment that is very difficult to teach or learn in. I suppose it might just be the nature of the beast, you morons;).

I don't even get that. Thought I'd be the one person right when I put ViCi first, LGD second lol. At least I enjoy watching Rattlesnake play and get to root for the underdog now in the finals so that LGD lands in second, as unlikely as it is.
