Dota 2 Beta Thread V: Real Talk Strikes Back [Tutorials]

At least I had the idea that everybody who wanted to play the game already has a beta or plays lol

People keep assuming that. Personally, I feel like that is a bit silly. Even for a hardcore game like Dota it's pretty safe to assume that only a fraction of the potential population is keeping themselves informed about this kind of stuff. I would expect an increase in monthly growth as soon as the early access price tag is removed and the game is actively being advertised as released and free to play.

"We picked Phantom Lancer because Phantom Lancer is fun to play." - Lod[A], Dreamhack Summer 2013

I got so much shit last night from the other team for picking Phantom Lancer in random draft (I was last pick.opposing team picked up Riki- I knew my teammates weren't going to buy detection). Makes me want to pick PL all the time if it's going generate this much vitriol from the opposing team (I've played the hero a grand total of 3 times- once before the patch in which he was buffed significantly and once a week ago in which I lost). Speaking of PL, what's a better choice for damage as your last slot item? Butterfly or Daedulus (do the illusions benefit from the crit?)?

the tsumani of bile thatll crash upon you when you lose as PL will make it feel terrible

puck, LS, NP, Gyro, batrider, kotl again

doto so varied

----

those item buy popups are new, are they from the client? seems neat

I feel so sorry for this spectator

"they havent been spotted yet!"

select box over vision ward

you can just picture his silent screaming

like shit, alliance gtfo as soon as they got near, how does he not notice that

With the nerfs to bear, it might be better to let Bulldog have Lone Druid over letting him get Prophet...

It's really hard because Alliance is one of the few teams that would first pick Prophet if LD was banned early. If you don't pick it yourself and they're not banned, you can be sure they'll get one of the two signature Bulldog heroes in the first two. Was even easier with the older draft format.

Its a stupid in joke, that is from people taking the old typo of "doto" to the extreme. It comes from 4chan and people shitposting the dev boards update topic when there isn't a hero.

Why would someone willingly pick Riki? I randomed him once, and playing was like kicking myself in the balls. My last game someone willingly chose him, and while the player did the best he could with what he got, if he had chosen literally any other hero we would have won the match. I shared a lane with him as Death Prophet, and I got the Alchemist low on life so many times, but Riki just couldn't finish him off. He usually just died.

Riki's really good.

Damage, mobility, free roam, AoE Silence/Blind.

What's not to like?

B/c he is a low level pubstomper...

sounds like you tried to force him to play way too aggressively early game!
that isnt even the worst mathcrafting ive seen

I've never seen him played well yet. Maybe not the hardest hero I've tried to play, but close.

Maybe. I didn't tell him what to do, but he didn't help the lane any. He got some good kills later in the match, but he died a bunch.

A good Riki can dominate, he was popular in pro games for a while too when they picked him to counter AM (he couldn't blink away in the smoke cloud and if he does blink he can jump to him anyway)

Also if he gets farmed backstab does massive amounts of damage.

I'm very surprised, cause he's a huge pubstomper. But I guess he's somewhat fallen off the map even in the world of pubs.

You can't think of Riki as a traditional carry, but at the same time don't expect him to do much in lane. He gets amazing damage and mobility from his blink strike, lots of scaling from backstab, and has a powerful silence/dodge tool in his cloud. Combine this with his permanent invisibility and you have a Nyx-like hero that has the ability to scale much harder.

What riki does is dominate the map. You don't sit and farm as much as other carries do, you make the opposing team live in fear as soon as you get a diffusal blade. If someone is farming alone, walking alone, or doing anything alone riki can kill them, that's what he does. Combine this with wisp and the enemy team will be terrified to go anywhere, and be forced to stay grouped.

His weakness lies in the same place Nyx's or BH's does, if the enemy team plays back and buys a lot of detection he's easy to kill. But at the same time once you get a bkb you can go back to being a terror, you'll just be doing so in teamfights. Don't underestimate riki's damage, he scales with agi better than just about anything else.

Riki's Invis is really his weakest ability, he doesn't get that much out of it. There is no extra damage or move speed from it like every other invis skill, it has a long fade delay, its fully stopped by him being silenced. The only benefit from it is that its always up, but once you get some true sight that doesn't really help.

Free roam.

We probably should have rotated the lanes and given Riki an easier target. We had other heroes that could have been more trouble to the Alchemist, but I'm not too experienced yet, and didn't want to call the shots. Still a close and fun game though so no complaints.

Picked up Riki recently, he works against players who go with running rather than fighting. He reminds me a bit of PA. You have to stay in lane to get to level 6, then roam to other lanes forcing sentry purchases while hopefully picking off a courier or hero while roaming. All this said he can be countered big time with bristle back, and BH can be a pain mid game.

So much losing lately again.

0.500 right now.

fuck this shit.

pretty poor ones probably but it sems better than taking backstab damage and usually a teammate is nearby to help

Riki is quite an annoying hero to face imo. (not that he is very strong, just very annoying)
You need to put quite a lot of resources into dealing with him... force staff or ghost skepter, dusts and wards (more than usual).
Any time you want to split push or get a bit of farming done you are at risk, sticking with your team is fine and all but then you don't really get any exp.
Other stealth heroes have a decent cooldown but as long as you are alone riki can just do his little opening combo again 10seconds after you get out of it.

Kind of like if you play against broodmother you're constantly having to spend time and gold to counter his spiderling armies pushing into your towers and his web invis.

Or prophet constantly pushing your towers all over the map, I don't enjoy playing against them. You can counter it just fine but I don't find it enjoyable.

The difference is that whatever resources you use to counter Brood, you get them back when you kill her Spiderlings. And countering Brood is much easier as a dust/sentry is enough since you have a good idea as to where she can be invisible.
