Double Dragon Neon coming to Steam w/ online co-op

"here's a much-requested feature for the console game... now ported to PC, with no support for our previous customers in sight!"

(-_-; )

Bleh, whatever. Good for Steam, I guess. Online was promised as a later patch when the game first came out, so this feels a bit disrespectful to previous buyers on XBLA / PSN / those who got it for free on PS+.

There's also that "we'd love to do a Battletoads DLC!" idea that was tossed around in quite a few early previews of the game that's still on the table... the
female
version of Billy that was shown in the art gallery that could be made into a DLC character, and a host of other options that could be explored for the game. I hope dumping it on steam with online isn't the last plan they have for it.

It's quite a fun game though, fantastic to play on Co-Op, and I liked the fact the game had a degree of a learning curve. Whatever happened to PLAYING games in order to learn them, eh? Trying to learn ways to break the game is part of the fun of playing BEU's.

It got low scores because game reviewers are bad at games.

It helps that it's not exactly a stellar representation of the beat 'em up nor is it a very good continuation of the DD design, but it isn't terrible or anything...just a disappointing revival of an iconic game. The try-hard 80s theme doesn't work so well, either.

Honestly, considering every DD game has been almost completely different from the previous in every way except the genre of game, I think it's an amazing continuation of the DD line. If they make Neon 2, I expect it to be COMPLETELY thematically different from Neon 1.

I think Super Best Friends did a reflection on the DD line on a whole; it is fascinating to see the complete lack of direction between each iteration of the games as they were worked on by different studios.

Hell, I'm pretty surprised Majesco is still a thing...

I think they are as well. I think unless they start getting those games to more versatile platforms that don't have such massive money gates for things like updates, dlc and general management, they won't be for much longer.

Prob. patching costs are too high or the game didn't have much of an install base on the PS3 or 360 to warrant it?

The series may have had differences that made each feel distinct from each other, but the core system of strikes, grapples, and power/special attacks was consistent across the most popular installments. Neon watered down the essential heart of Double Dragon when there's no serious grapple/mounting options and consequently feels more inline with the black sheep of the franchise, DD V, than it is with DD I-IV.

Then make some paid DLC to go along with it, (such as Scott Pilgrim did), or at least state why you're shunning previous owners somewhere. This story hasn't had much time to develop, but I hope they do say something specific about it.

There's always factors, I'm not oblivious to that. But it doesn't leave a good taste, especially when it was promised specifically beforehand.

I'm pretty sure the answer is because "microsoft publishing and sony publishing costs for patches is too high". They will never state that publically because throwing those guys under the bus is a great way to burn some very large very strong very powerful bridges. It may screw them over this time, but I'm sure that doesn't mean that they don't want their NEXT game to be part of the Summer of Arcade promotion.

Scott Pilgrim had just as many problems as DDN did, their methodology of doing things wasn't any better.

Annoyingly, I just bought it on PS3 before Christmas. I swear this late port business is the reason I shouldn't buy a PS4/XB1. Remove the temptation altogether, problem solved.
I've been debating the same strategy. Now it's even happening on portables with stuff like Blackgate.

It's really no excuse anymore; they can say such things without burning bridges, and there are situations where these things have worked out, or been specifically explained.

As an example, the developers of Phantom Breaker Battlegrounds very clearly stated that the way they handled their DLC (including the content with the base game, and then unlocking it with a DLC purchase code) was due to them being small, and the logistics of hosting and uploading new content / multiple patches was too much for them.

Similarly, they also wish to update the XBLA version of the game to match the Vita release once it comes out, because they don't want the fans that helped sustain the game in the first place to be left behind. (I wouldn't be surprised if this changes in the shifting console climate, but I truly appreciate that this is their first intention.)

In DDN's case, I wouldn't be surprised if some more info /clarification comes out eventually, whether it be from Bozon on Miiverse replying to Mighty Switchforce discussion, an "it's out of our hands, this was a Maejsco decision" comment, or an interview somewhere.

It's just a bit annoying, as this was a feature promised to come to the console versions a few times, in pre-release and post release commentary.

I'm not as agitated as the discussion on this makes me sound, either; but it's clear that many a dev reads GAF, so I just wanted to be clear that there's more reactions to this news than the "Yeah STEAM!" and "It sucks, don't bother!" mix that was presented on the first page of this thread. WayForward gets enough similar commentary with their choices on ports, features between versions, and system selections everywhere, so my commentary isn't out of the ordinary.

Double Dipping for Double Dragon. The original took some getting used to, but it got fantastic, and the cheesy theming turned out so well.

And yes, Lilly and Jilly (or whatever it was) needs to be there, I'd even pay for it as DLC.

I didn't pick this up yet because I was waiting for the online co-op to be implemented. I'll pick it up on Steam right away.

I remember being so apprehensive about this game initially, but it's so awesome.

I really love Gonzo's artstyle for the game too, it totally fits the characters and tone of the series perfectly.

This game was the best PS+ freebie ever. Gameplay is blast, leveling up your character is addicting, and the soundtrack is God-tier.

Awesome game is awesome. Im not doubledragondipping but i wholeheartedly recommend it to anyone looking for a righteous beat em up experience. Trapper keeper-like visuals. 80s inspired soundtrack. Tight, satisfying gameplay. What more could you want!?

This and Bloodrayne: Betrayal made me a fan. Looking forward trying out Shantae at some point. OST is fantastic.

I got this free on PS+ and deleted it once I learned there was no online. I'll keep an eye on this for future sales since I heard it was pretty good.

Holy shit, I was just thinking about this a few days ago and wondered if it was on PC. I looked and it wasn't, and I was bummed. But now...

I hope the price is good.

YEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEESSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSS!

Didn't the developers get rid of a lot of the classic DD grapple moves since they thought it slowed things down?

I swear I saw one review of the game that said that.

Ah, man. This is great news, as I've been eyeing this game the last couple of days(and listening to the soundtrack on youtube). 80s throwback, Welcome to Steam.

"Gonna double dip on this one. I have it on the ps3 and it is really fun, but I never finished it. Why did it get low scores, plus, did the game sell well?"

It got low scores because game reviewers are bad at games.
Well, that explains everything. Same reason that God Hand got a 3/10, and W101 got an average score of 7/10 I guess.
