Nope. She’d have been fucking great, and was in the running I believe at one point.

Nothing wrong with the Doctor being a woman, but it has to be a far better actress, with far better material to work with.

Yep - Missy showed a gender swap can work, with the right person. It worked because Michelle Gomez is a fantastic actress and she was given some decent lines which she delivered to perfection.

Honestly I think it was wrong to make the doctor a woman. I'm really tired of this nonsense, there's nothing wrong with the doctor remaining true to the character and it's history, while bringing in new female characters and actors (if female representation were to be a problem, which it isn't), the show has always had strong female roles and it's a wide open universe for more characters.

It was a Current Year retcon that isn't consistent with what came before, and in many ways contemptuously disrespects it.

Possibly controversial opinion: I honeslty think Richard Ayoade would make a fucking amazing Doctor, and bring something genuinely new to the role.

Missy gave them such an amazing template to follow in how to.make a gender swapped Doctor work, it's maddening to have seen them so completely ignore it.

Missy had none of that 'gender is a social construct' bollocks. The Master was a woman now, and that was a whole new, very different experience, and she was revelling in it.

The sheer joy of having tits and getting to wear fancy frocks while being their usual evil genius-ness comes through in her performance so strongly that you can't help but enjoy it too.

Whitacker's Doctor does nothing with it. She's a woman in drag doing a bad impression of better actors that previously had the role.

It's treated as less of a significant change than regenerating usually is, and is paraded around by the show makers and press like the Doctor having a vag is nothing new or has any impact on him whatsoever, deflecting any criticism with accusations of sexism.

It's a joyless, spiteful approach, that does nothing to win over it's naysayers or justify the change beyond it being a deliberate, ideological attempt to 'fix' the show, by people who never actually liked it

He would have brought a bizzare alien quality to the character, even more than Matt Smith. Would have been a hoot.

They made the Doctor a woman and didn't have her act like one? What the fuck? That's a big wasted opportunity on the writing part.

But I've only watched 3 episodes of Whitaker's second season and I now realize never saw the Doctor acting any different from when she was a man. What a waste.

It is never, as far as I have seen or heard, been brought up as a significant difference beyond her smugly referring to it as an 'upgrade' to sexist strawman characters.

The opening episode of the last series even had her wearing a mens tuxedo, which looked stupid.

Honestly, the first real warning sign for me something wasn't right in the first episode was when they had her running, pull an expression like she had less stamina than usual, or was uncomfortable running without a bra, and then they even had the set up for a joke, with a companion asking her if she was OK, but then she just acted like nothing was wrong and it was a weird question to ask.

Looking back, I think that was deliberate, using the expectation of humour to basically bait and switch with an unspoken message of 'Hah! You expected a joke there didn't you, you sexist pig! Well men and women are biologically identical, so fuck you!'.

Maybe I read too much into it, but given that that's been a running theme since, and it was the perfect opportunity to have the Doctor lighten the mood and have a bit of self deprecating fun, with soemthing about feeling bad he never asked if his companions were wearing sports bras now, that I can't help but feel it was a deliberate bit of virtue signalling and a jab at the fans who weren't happy about the Doctor's 'upgrade'.

I like him but he's a bit one-note and his lack of emotional range would probably be a hindrance.

You know, that sounds suspiciously like they're making the Doctor's regeneration a thinly veiled allegory of being transgender.

Knowing the wokes who infest the BBC, that scenario seems not so far off.

I got Britbox in their new year half price sale, and have started over with Pertwee's episodes.

The Blu Ray sets are brilliant, but that streaming convenience is hard to beat.

I'm physical or bust. We don't get the super nice deluxe sets you Brits get, but ours still have all of the content on the discs which is all I'm interested in really.

Don't get me wrong, physical is always superior, and part of my plans for life before I'm 40 is to get a home server set up with all my stuff on to play instantly anywhere in the house, but having all of classic Who available at the click of a button for 3 quid a month is too hard to say no to.

Plus Sharpe is getting added to it this week. Peak Sean Bean in HD? Yes please!

Episode was not as bad as others in the past 2 series. The guy running now is awful and is making a mess of it. I'd actually prefer RTD come back. Sure, it was camp at times, but he did character interaction really well. At least they got rid of that block of wood, ryan. Should have been graham staying on and the others getting the boot

I buy the dvds(and now blu ray sets) for the extras. I really enjoy the making of, commentaries, and other stuff from the classic series

And for as much shit as Moffat got, I'll always love that he gave us a Multi Master episode and he proved that John Simm as The Master was a fucking brilliant choice after RTD handled him so badly during the Tennant years.

I'd rather have Jon Favreau handle Doctor Who, but I don't know if he's ever watched the show.

But if he was a fan, I'd rather have the guy who jumpstarted the MCU and is currently saving Star Wars handle the show rather than some BBC virtual signaling NPC.

Yeah John Simm is excellent, another who really understood the role.

My brother kept telling me he was watching it, and I couldn't be arsed to care. I already stopped watching the show after Capaldi's second season, and nothing I've read about Chibnall's horrendous run has convinced me there's a reason to go back.

The Timeless Child horseshit was already a disaster, but now they're thinking of changing the TARDIS' iconic Police Call Box disguise? Just kill the show already.
this.
Capaldi was amazing, imo.

I looked at the numbers ok Wikipedia and 13 had more viewers than 12 did by a couple million, I didn’t think the end of Capaldi was that bad. Having said that, I don’t remember his regeneration.

You may be comparing overnight to consolidated (live and a week of iplayer) numbers there.

13 started stronger, but is now well below Capaldi's worst numbers. The Timeless Child two parter ending of her last series, had the lowest viewing figures in the shows history, not just new Who.

The new years 'festive' special last year was also the lowest viewed special ever, until this year, which even fewer people watched.

The Chibnal/Whitaker stuff is the least liked Dr Who has ever been, and locked itself on a downward spiral of disinterest since the first episode.

The special numbers are as clear as day, but Whittaker only just dropped below Capaldi numbers at the end if Wiki is correct, even with the continuous decline.

True, but it has dropped below them, despite how much larger her numbers started at, and lacking the uptick in viewers Capaldi's finalies saw.

Besides which, the entire point of replacing Capaldi was because of the fact his viewing figures were bad, but consistent enough to show there was still a core audience to build back off of.

The fact it took less than 2 series for them to be even worse, is clear proof the 'fix' hasn't worked, and is now actively turning away the die hard core audience.

I got into New Who well into the Smith era, so when I started with 9 I worked my way through with no viewing fatigue, then watching the brilliant 10 and 11, even enjoying 12 when they released despite not being as memorable as the previous Doctors as a whole. But the way 13 has pissed on everything is such a shame.

The highs of Midnight, Blink, The Impossible Planet and Doomsday seem a million miles away now.
