Dragon Age now belongs to the fans, says BioWare writer

Dragon Age appears to have reached the end of the road, at least for now. Despite the largely positive reception, sales of Dragon Age: The Veilguard didn't meet C-suite expectations, the game's most recent update appears to be its last, and developers at BioWare have been scattered to the four winds as the studio focuses exclusively on early work on the next Mass Effect game. But former BioWare senior writer Sheryl Chee recently took to Bluesky to reassure fans that Dragon Age isn't really dead, "because it's yours now."

"A cool French woman dropped a cool quote from Camus on me today: 'In the midst of winter, I found there was, within me, an invincible summer. (I mean, who does resistance like the French, right?)," Chee, whose writing credits on Dragon Age go all the way back to Origins, wrote on Bluesky in response to a user mourning the death of Dragon Age. "We're going through it right now. It's a lot, everywhere.

"But DA isn't dead. There's fic. There's art. There's the connections we made through the games and because of the games. Technically EA/BioWare owns the IP but you can't own an idea, no matter how much they want to. DA isn't dead because it's yours now."

In a subsequent post, Chee wrote, "So someone just reposted my thing saying they'll write a giant AU [alternate universe] and that's what I'm talking about. If DA has inspired you to do something, if it sparks that Invincible summer, then it's done its job, and it has been my greatest honor to have been a part of that."

I've got the first 2 games on the XBox 360 shelf. I think they are even backards compatable. I'm almost sure those might belong to me. I could be wrong. Will they come take them from me? :)

Don't know what characters and which part this person wrote, when hearing about DA writer, I only think about the Thedas creator David Gaider. His work was pretty professional and profound despite openly being a gay.

But even good writer like him becomes rather unhinged recently, on Bluesky.

These folks got everything and want more. They want more big budget games that are catered just for them, while expecting the rest of the gaming audience to buy in.

Fuck off.

Words to live by from an actually talented writer, Chee.

It was such a great game - the expectations of the execs were the real problem. :messenger_pensive:

The amount of cope around this disaster of a game has never stopped - from the "return to form" lies in the pre-release reviews, blaming of the chuds for its failure, and now this 'it was such a great game, but'... bullshit. It is seemingly impossible for media outlets and some developers to admit that their safe, non-creative games filled with out of touch activist drivel just don't have mass appeal. People are losing their jobs and media outlets are losing their readers and relevancy at a very fast pace, but they still will not look at this situation truthfully and accurately. I do realize it can be difficult to admit mistakes, but come the fuck on.

I’m honestly wanting to know how many of these games with “Woke” leadership and mantras have been successful. Does anyone know? I’m sure there have been a few but I can’t recall any it seems every one of them has been worse off than previous versions of the games.

As an IP dragons Age should be sold off and get back to fantasy gaming and not political battles or agendas, but I could be wrong

Should have been for the fans to begin with but instead they chose to be political and push propaganda minority views.

Should have fucking thought about fans before they buried it alive.

Don’t forget, EA flew in a bunch of game journalists and influencers for a big 6 hour preview event, then sent review codes only to the ones who gave it the most glowingly positive previews. Such a dishonest attempt at manipulating the Metacritic score.

They also had an army of marketing bots gushing and making the same stupid comments like “OMG you can pet the cats and play rock paper scissors with the skeleton dude!!” in all their preview videos.

They tried so so hard to sell as many copies of this turd as possible before the general public caught on.
