I thought the hype was finally cooling down after FFXV, Nioh, BotW, Nier Automata and Persona 5, but then this happens and... How can a game look so perfect?

I pre-ordered both today! Yesssssss!!

Really loving what I've been seeing in that 3DS version. I hope there will surface some ideal conditions for S-E to at least seriously consider localizing this version for the West sooner or later.

I wonder how the skill system works, with no classes and the MC wielding both 1H and 2H swords, feels like it's going the DQVIII route.

Managed to preorder that sweet double pack with the slime bowl because why not. Hurry up July (well August, shipping will take a while I guess) !!!

Dragon Quest was one of the first RPG series to introduce AI. In the original version of DQ4, you couldn't control anyone manually but the hero in chapter 5. It's not a new thing for the series at all.

However, there's no disadvantage to manual control here. Not sure where that's coming from.

I think the disadvantage is because the AI will use information available to them at time of action. But player can only set action at start of turn.

For example if my hero gets hit for 40 dmg this turn, the AI healer may choose to heal hero even if hero was at full hp at start of turn.

I've used this throughout the DS/3DS games, it's really useful for the healer to immediately react based on the situation as they act rather than attempt to predict what the enemy will do and tell the healer manually to heal the right person at their turn to act. Both the AI and manual control have different advantages and disadvantages to me- generally by the final boss I've moved to full manual control due to more item use, multiheal spells etc.

Hopefully it's not too long until there's a western release, but I have to say that the PS4 footage was a bit funky regarding framerate here and there.

That's nothing new though.

Isn't square Enix says that they want to released All his games at the same time in all markets?
And they want to push very hard the DQ's brand in the west ?

Maybe September? Or Im being naive?

The game looks fantastic but seriously, another MIDI soundtrack when an orchestrated version exists?

How have the orchestrated DQVIII releases (PS2 US, 3DS Japan) not moved us past this?

Because Sugiyama gonna Sugiyama.

Having said that though, I think synthesised music can still be done very well. The problem is the sample quality here is quite low. Like, worse than the new synthesised stuff for the western versions of DQVII and VIII 3DS or some of the mobile games.

I think all it means is SE is taking release games dates near each other more seriously than ever now.

DQ is a huge game to localize and it's never had a huge following in the west. I think they will try harder than ever to get it out soon as they can now though due to Matsuda comments.

Thanos acquires the fully powered Infinity Gauntlet in The Avengers: Infinity War, but loses when all the superheroes team up together to stop him.
I think that we'll get localization news at E3, if the game is being planned for a western release at all.

Square Enix are probably going to have a decent E3 presence again this year. Pretty sure a localization stands a good chance of being announced then...

Sure but what does he have on these people that he exerts that kind of power? He's an employee and this is a Japanese company.

He's not an employee of Square Enix. In fact, Koichi Sugiyama Yuji Horii and Akira Toriyama are all freelancers who have their own personal companies and who each own parts of the rights to the Dragon Quest franchise. Square Enix doesn't own the music of Dragon Quest.

OK well that makes more sense, but still, it's not as if they haven't used his orchestrations in-game before. It's clearly not something that's impossible for them to negotiate with him. And a poor MIDI soundtrack is something that harms the atmosphere of the game they're trying to sell.

Not only is Sugiyama not an employee of Square Enix, he also maintains full rights to every piece of music he writes, and he's a chairperson for JASRAC, which is like the RIAA of Japan. He is vehemently against all kinds of things, like streaming and even digital purchasing.

It has to be. It wouldn't make sense to localize spin-offs but not a mainline game.

While I believe DQXI will be brought over... Koei is probably the one who localized Heroes and DQ builders probably is no where near as huge as the mainline games.

Yeah, the amount of ownership the Big Three (Hori, Toriyama and Sugiyama) have over their series is pretty unique.

I guess it's to he expected when both Toriyama and Sugiyama were celebrites before their involvement.

In case anybody was still concerned for some reason, the new issue of Dengeki confirms that manual control for all party members is available for both camera modes on PS4.

So wait, am I hearing that this doesn't have voice-acting? That's pretty... odd. Hoping they do what they did with VIII apparently and give it VA when it comes over.

What's even weirder is this might not have an orchestral soundtrack either? And just like with the VA when VIII was brought over, it got an orchestral soundtrack added as well??

How likely is it that this will get the same treatment when it comes out in the west? Considering the appeal of the Dragon Quest soundtracks (I've listened to a few, though I've never played anything but a couple hours in Builders), resorting to MIDI on PS4 seems ludicrous so hopefully they do the same thing as they did back with VIII. It would be really jarring for a high budget game like this to have no VA either (P5 and other games not having complete VA is fine, but next to nothing or none at all is kind of crazy).

Speaking of SFC DQ6, animations, 2D/16-bit graphics and the end of a trilogy, these were the magazine previews I remember seeing in EGM2, Electronic Gaming Monthly and GamePro, respectively.

Just in case no one has said it, I think it's really awesome how you post all these old EGM/American game magazine scans. :) Brings back a lot of good memories, EGM was my main gaming source pre internet age.

I'm looking forward to the 3DS DQ11 more. DQ just works on portable.

Thanks -- I was a fan of Sendai magazines and all the magazines they published out of Lombard, Illinois.

I wish I could see if the original Diehard GameFan had any coverage of Dragon Quest VI but so many issues have not been scanned, and much of what has that is floating around on flickr and elsewhere, is of really low quality

Nintendo Power though, had some great coverage, more than I would've expected for a game that never got localized for SNES.

Was expecting it, but glad it is confirmed. If movement offers advantages, then moving everyone around would offer a bigger strategical aspect than the auto-camera mode as well.

These gif bring back sad memories for me. I still have the EGB magazine that was showing Dragon Quest V for SNES coming soon in 1993 I believe and it never came :'(. It had a full page dedicated to it and I was over the moon seeing Dragon Quest in 24bit graphics back in the day
