Dragon Quest 11 releasing July 29th in Japan for 3DS and PS4

Pardon my ignorance. Wasn't dragon quest X a MMO game? Is this Dragon Quest a return to the single player format? I've only ever played Dragon Quest XIII on PS2 and have fond memories of that game. Love the art direction of XI as well.

You're correct about DQX being an MMO. The last single player Dragon Quest was 9 on DS. Also you played VIII (8) on PS2, not XIII (13) :).

Have they shown off any actual battle gameplay yet from the PS4 version?

I expect that it's turn based but is it the same old Dragon Quest? Any interesting additions?

They showed it last night. Seems there are two modes. You can either play it like DQX, or you can play it like traditional DQ

Can you only control the protagonist in the DQX setting or can you play as someone else when in that mode? I dont understand Japanese but it would be pretty cool if they said so.

As excited I was for the PS4 version when it was first revealed, I find the 3DS version more visually appealing now. It's weird, but the 3DS seems a bit more vibrant color-wise and the more thick cel-shading on the characters is another plus to me.

Here's hoping DQXI releases not too long after in the west (either way, I'm guessing early 2018 or summer next year).

I've been trying to find this out: are the 2 versions of the game the same other than presentation? Do they have the same story, locations, etc?

I originally thought this was going to be like Ni No Kuni, which was two very different games on DS and PS3. Now based on the trailer I am starting to think these 2 are basically the same.

Release in the West in Q1 2018, voice acting added, PS4/Switch (simultaneous launch in Japan), if NS ver. is not ready by then switch it with 3DS.

They're the same story.

But so are Ni no Kuni DS and PS3. The PS3 version contains the entire DS game's story, and adds an extra arc on the end.

Dragon Quest was one of the first RPG series to introduce AI. In the original version of DQ4, you couldn't control anyone manually but the hero in chapter 5. It's not a new thing for the series at all.

However, there's no disadvantage to manual control here. Not sure where that's coming from.

Despite my personal love for DQ4, it had some flaws. This was one of them, sometimes.

Nothing like bringing Cristo to a boss fight (Esturk comes to mind) and watching him cast Beat (whack) over and over again.

If you can free move, do you need to? Can you get out of spell range or something by doing it? Etc. I.e. are you losing out tactics-wise by going for party control.

I frankly love the oldschool turn-based style and get very nervous when I see DQ tinkering with it. So many RPGs have moved to weaksauce action-RPG systems, that not much remains for more traditional RPG fans. I expect Squenix to screw it up eventually.

Cristo (nee Kiryl)'s Coup de Gras in DQ: Heroes was a lampshade of this AI bug.

It's improved a lot since then, although I generally don't like using AI myself. But it tends to be a good option for healers because the healing AI tends to be psychic in your favor--i.e. say Hero gets knocked down to low HP at the start of the round, then when the healer's turn comes up it will heal that damage done at the start of the round.

Those beautiful sultry eyes.

Yep. Martina = babe. Will definitely be in my party as much as I can have her there. Need more Martina wallpaper....

I've been playing DQ7 with Ruff on AI and occasionally Maribel. Maribel for some reason won't use the Sunstone though (it casts Kafrizzle) so I end up running her manually too.

Wish the AI would heal with items more often though when on healing tactics.

AI never gets it quite right.

Getting the PS4 version for sure. No nostalgia at all for the series since I didn't grow up playing the games (only DQ game I have is DQB Vita) but on its own merits this game is very interesting. Glad they continued with the series, in my mind I had the impression that DQ mainline had ended or died on the PS2/DS.

You can't order without some sort of help from someone in Japan, unfortunately.

I see thanks, might be better to give up then :-x saving my wallet a little bit.

When I don't want to nag my friends.

They would make their own announcement.

Nope, they can't do this themselves. My bet is that they are hoping for Ninty or Sony to step in and help and whoever does will have it exclusively else we'll see it in two years and hopefully an added platform for the one who is already dead by then.

Seriously tho this looks like the Dragon Quest I've always wanted. They've finally started putting QoL stuff into DQ games, it's an offline console game, it has CGI cinematics, there's movement in battle... I seriously can't wait for this. I'm sure they'll add voice acting to the localized versions, and I hope it'll take less than 8 months to localize :(

The synth music is a giant bummer but I'm so tired of being BH about it. I don't know why they don't just hire someone else because it sounds like ass and it's 2017 but whatever

Hopefully the localization dates aren't too far off. I would be fine with early next year. Playing P5 has made me incredibly hungry for more turn based JRPGs on console. Thought I would miss the portability of P4G, but I don't even care once I started P5.

Delaying the Switch version is pretty smart, I can see a lot of people who would buy the 3DS version double dip for a Switch version at a later date. Lets the Switch establish a bigger install base as well.

Because that would be akin to replacing john williams in star wars. Suiguana had serious cred.
Plus I think he has a stake in the series. I know he owns the music he composed for each games, wouldn't be surprised if gee had an exclusivity agreement

Believes Dragon Quest is a franchise managed by Sony
I would like to purchase this entertainment consumer product Japanese role playing video game

No they just didn't release anything until VIII.
It's probably the Mystic Quest debacle you're thinking about.

Nah, in Europe, which got VIII first, they gave up numbers for VIII on PS2 and IV, V on NDS. But after that, they brought numbers back for VI, IX, VII and VIII on 3DS.

Listening to the music during the stream took away a lot of my enjoyment. Man, it just didn't fit one bit.

The more vibrant the game gets, the more jarring it feels. You can still retain the DQ sound with Sugiyama's style of composition. You can't mistake it. There's gonna be no interactive music either because he's so fixated on keeping it traditional.

I don't get it. If the PS4 version doesn't look classic/traditional, why should the music?

EDIT: We have two versions too that look completely different. Why not give the PS4 version the orchestrated sound then?

In three words: because Koichi Sugiyama

I didn't believe you so I checked the boxes. You're right. It's Dragon Quest: "Titles". But I clearly remember the gaming mags titling them with numbers though. Anyway, my bad. I was wrong.
