Dragon Quest 8: Journey of the Cursed King (3DS) |OT| Cor Blimey!

I'm pretty much dead inside for it. Now when I see it I don't even feel anything anymore. :(

It's more that people have a more positive history for DQ8. DQ8 is the first DQ game for many and it's a perfect starting point.

I have DQ7r in its wrapper, but will start after DQ8.

Couple technical thoughts:

-It seems battles are 60 FPS only in the new sped-up mode (which is an amazing addition and an absolute lifesaver). That mode is quite straining for the hardware, even without 3D, so the 3DS appears to do this via removing anti-aliasing until the battle returns to normal speed, and presumably, 30 FPS. Quite smart and surprisingly subtle.

-According to the digital manual, the game is not compatible with the Circle Pad Pro, and so analogue camera controls are exclusive to the New 3DS c-stick, the most likely reason (in my view) being that the Circle Pad Pro actually requires some processing power.

Did these motherfuckers buff up the post-game boss too (
Lord of the Dragovians)
? He's doing more than double damage WITH 3 Kabuffs than what Red Scarlet's guide claims for him to do WITHOUT any buffing for the PS2 version, and at 6 levels higher than Recommended. That's absurd. If they're gonna pull this shit, I might just stop here. Final boss clearly needed buffing, that was fine, but this is ridiculous.

Edit: Apparently they did, along with every post-game boss. Fuck me.

Your missing DQ 1 - 3 GB color games to say yoh have the complete DQ Nintendo collection :p

Lol, I thought about them but I'm good with the wii collection. I don't think I even want to know how much the gbc games are. I do need the dqX expansions though and I'd like to get swords as well

How the heck do you get into the new dungeons? Post final boss only>?

Nope. One is before the final dungeon. Go to Neos. Other one is post-game and unlocked via the original post game.

Was able to beat the first post game boss after gaining 10 levels from LMS and MKS, and using Morrie instead of Yangus. It doesn't help much with the absurd near one-hit-kill crit rate of his attacks, but I was able to dish out more damage so the fight wouldn't last as long.

Did this game get a guide?

I loved my original PS2 guide. This has added stuff, so I'd love a new version of it. Yes, the internet exists, but love guides with my JRPGs, mostly for art and nice layouts.

I'd be surprised if it did. Stores around me barely even made it seem like it came out. I had to ask for it at Best Buy.

Is there a list of 3DS exclusive content? I just completed the old post-game content but I'm not sure if I'm "done" or if there's anything else out there.

Off the top of my head.

New Monster Arena "league"
2 New Dungeons.
Cameron the Photographer Quests--people are loving this one apparently.
2 New Scenarios Added.

Thanks - what is "new scenario"?

I played with the codex stuff a little but it's way too esoteric for my tastes. I did complete the
Marcello boss dungeon
but wasn't sure if there was anything beyond the
Dragovian Trials
in terms of difficulty/superbosses.

One of the new rewards for beating the original post game boss has changed to the new post-game bonus dungeon.

I played about 65% of DQ8 on PS2 about 4 years ago....And now I am sitting here looking at DQ7 and DQ8 for 3DS and don't know which to start with.

Do I start with 8 because I never finished it or do I start with 7 because it seems like a good "more classic" segway into 8?

Choices!

7 can drag on and on, much slower paced game.

8 is nonstop quality.

Every boss has been buffed hard. Those guys hits criticals 8 out of 10 times... but they are doable. Defeated 2 of them at level 44, but it was difficult as fuck.

"The one and only Yangus? Shame there aren't any more of you" King Trode is actually very funny. I usually go to the battle records section to read his comments and some of them are really funny.

Yeah I beat all but the last trial fight last night (was getting late). Morrie is a lifesaver.

Made a grand total of about 100k tokens from the casino. Let me buy one of every prize plus have plenty left over extra to use for alchemy, mass buy magic waters to hoard gold, and still have plenty of leftover for the inevitable next casino.

Then I got to castle Trodain and unlocked the monster arena. Rank D was annoying with the death attacks. Going to get the ship before I try for higher ranks. I also got lucky and was able to kill 5 LMS in the castle. Gave my team a nice level boost. Way past where I got on the PS2 dungeon. The 3DS enhancements really improve the experience for me.

Buffed post game super bosses. Guess I better really make sure I am ready at that point.

Gentlemen, we can rebuild it. We have the capability to make the world's first enhanced store. Steam will be that store. Better than it was before.
Played for a few hours over the weekend and finally unlocked the ship. Ran into two liquid metal slimes in Trodain castle randomly, one right after the other, and was able to kill them both for a nice level boost which helped a lot on the music mole boss fight. My characters are around level 23 now which I believe is right where they're supposed to be.

I'm really loving this game.

How did you guys avoid spamming the liquid metal slimes? That's some self control.

I stayed in the throne room for probably an hour total turning the camera back and forth to respawn the slimes and attempt to slaughter them. I think I leveled up 5 or 6 times.

Thanks. I'm trying to do Rapthorne atm and...I don't know if its a case of buffs since the PS2 version but he has some RNG bullshit, i swear. My party are overlevelled for him, I think, at 45-48, and all have fine gear etc...the battle will go fine, he won't negate Jessica's Accelerate etc and Hero can keep on using Omniheal while Angelo and Yangus wail on him...then out of nowhere he'll do "Unleash all his magic attack" and some other 70-120+ damage dealing attacks and like half the party are down. Strategy feels pretty solid until then because I always have someone healing, always have one person on attack and Angelo for backup heals if needed, and Jessica either does Kafrizzle(?) or Buffs of some sort.

Yup, they buffed him bigtime, especially the damage output for his big attacks. I was level 45ish with the hero and had some trouble.

I am right with you there. It is SUPER easy to abuse metal slimes with the way the enemies spawn. I just got Angelo in my party, and I got nearly everyone to level 19 super early in the game. Since I hear the bosses got harder, maybe this will balance things out.

I bought 10 tokens, walked out empty-ended. :D Is there some secret to it I don't know about?

I had two things stopping me. One, neither Yangus or my Hero had the second tier critical or miss skill. Two, I encountered about 7 liquid metal slimes going through the castle and killed 4-5 of them.

In the first casino, bingo is the way to go. You can bet up to 100 tokens per game, which is the base multiplier for your winnings. I started with 25 tokens. I then played the slots until a got a few hundred tokens. Quick saves are permanent, so just save before playing, save after every big win, and reload if you losing too often. My limit was negative five games worth of tokens. After that, I just played bingo until I got the amount of tokens I wanted. Each game is automatic, so it is easy to play it in the background while doing something else.

The Dragon Graveyard is such a boon thanks to the Metal King Slimes (and camera abuse tactics), I'm already close to level 40 which is overkill territory for the boss in that dungeon and the next few cities. Never reached that far in any DQ game unless it was the final dungeon.

Use the Quick Save, play Slots until you have about 300. Reload if you lose too many tokens, save again if you win. Proceed to Bingo. Save again and go all or nothing with reloads until you have a decent win. Reload if you lose. Put a video on and repeat the process until you're rolling in tokens. After a certain amount, only need to save if you win a larger prize.

This is only for the first Casino. I still haven't figured out Roulette. I've been taking a bit of a break myself.

There's nothing more I dislike in a DQ game than being over-levelled so for me it's pretty easy to avoid obsessively hunting metal slimes. Just a couple of kills in a dungeon is okay for me. For post game I can then go to the slime hill every once in a while and kill a few.

Though if you plan to do the new post game boss dungeon then you had better be killing them now anyway because that shit is hardcore.

Roulette is pretty simple to figure out. You abuse the options given to you, particularly the fact that you can bet either one full square grid of numbers, or one full row (meaning you have 1/3 chance to win). I haven't experimented with the full row, but I've been using full square grid. It goes without saying but quick save for every winnings you make, and reset whenever you lose.

The x3 multiplier really speeds things up as far as winnings are concerned. As we speak, I'm already at 28,000+ tokens after starting with 600 from Cash and Carrie.

EDIT: Well that was goddamn quick. In a matter of 1 hour and a lot of save scumming, I was able to get to 400,000+ tokens, more than enough to acquire the LM Armour and Gringham Whip.

I enjoy being over leveled because most of the tedium from random battles is avoided when trying to get from point A to B. I don't mind the occasional fight, and I always go after new enemies so I can appreciate the art and humor, but I can also backtrack without issue, or without forgetting why I was headed in a certain direction.

To each their own. I'm mostly happy because I'm pretty sure I never made it this far in my two previous on PlayStation 2.

Post-game shit:

Fuck Sandy/Stella. Not only did they have to taint the game with her presence, but her quest is a major piece of shit.

In retrospect, I'm extremely happy that I ended up buying this game instead of the cheaper PS2 version as the increased speed, no random encounters, and other QoL improvements have made this a blast to play. For a 3D RPG, it plays almost as fast as DQ IV ds and DQ V ds.

Yeah, the QOL improvements are incredible. They did an amazing job in that regard. Never playing the PS2 version again.

I'm also glad I picked this up instead of playing my PS2 copy (at some random point.) I usually get bored of JRPGs around 10 to 15 hours in, but I'm over 40 into this and going strong. It's even gotten me through a rough spot in my depression -- one which may get especially bad tomorrow. I'll be leaning on this game heavily if it gets bad enough and no friends are available.

It does disappoint me to see this thread dying down already and only hitting 23 pages so far. I know it's just a rerelease of a PS2 title, but I hope that doesn't bode poorly for its sales.

And another quick question. When you're save scumming at a casino, is there a particular way to do it? I tried just to see if I could, but the game sent me back to a church and didn't seem to save my progress. What did I screw up?

Use the quick save feature instead of saving at the church, and when you return to the game, make sure you pick the option "Start from a suspended save" or something like that. That way you save in the casino and you save a lot of time.

My strategy:

Hero - Miracle Sword

Yangus - Sage Stone

Jessica - Oomph on Hero, then accelerate

Angelo - Timbrel of tension

It takes a while to kill him, but It works. Killed him at lvl 41/42.

Unfortunately the timing of its release couldn't be worse. I put it as my priority for January, but my backlog is huge. I know it won't be a priority for most people but I put DQ first against most things.

Yeah, I never imagined DQVIII as snappy and yet the 3DS version is exactly that. From the crisp menus, to the faster battles, to the instant alchemy, to the addressed skill point system, to the improved world map/dungeon navigation etc. and no random battles, it will be hard to go back. This version just feels amazing to play.

The snappy speed of the game really is so much appreciated. What a relief coming off of Pokemon Sun / Moon. My faith in turn-based games is restored.
