Dragon Quest III HD-2D Remake |OT| Timeless JRPG that's fun for body types A and B alike

jshackles

Gentlemen, we can rebuild it. We have the capability to make the world's first enhanced store. Steam will be that store. Better than it was before.

This is an amazing OT for a great game only slightly marred by all that A/B and censorship nonsense.

Will be picking it up and delay starting Metaphor even more, lol.

This looks appealing and I love a jRPG with a good job system. I'm a little apprehensive, though -- I played FFIII Pixel Remaster last year and found it was a little too old-school for me to enjoy anymore. I have a lot of love and nostalgia for 16-bit RPG's, but I think the earlier 8-bit ones haven't held up as well. Any expectations as to where this sits on the spectrum? I enjoyed Dragon Quest XI and FFV is still one of my favorite games, for whatever that's worth.

By the way, Green Man Gaming still has the PC version on sale for $47.99 (after signing in)

Preordered on Steam. Already Steam Deck Verified. I own 1-3 and 5 on iOS. Can’t beat the NDS versions of those games, but this should be good.

DQ3 is always super high on Japan’s best JRPG of all time.

Anyone got their hands on a Switch version early? Wonder how blurry it is in handheld mode. I know Octopath 1&2 suffered from the same thing.

Excited. Especially since i haven't beaten the original. Have to wait until 11am tomorrow because thats when it releases on steam in cdt.

Gonna wait for impressions from someone with no nostalgia

From what I’ve read, this game has zero character development and very little story
You need to understand what you are getting yourself in to with this game.

This very old school style JRPG, it doesn’t have some crazy plot or deep character development. The focus is more on the adventure rather than character story.

That's the thing

I think I would have LOVED this game when it originally released, had I been more into gaming back then.

But with over 30 years since, I may not appreciate it nearly as much as someone else. And I am someone who DID enjoy DQ11, which is far more modern.

I can still appreciate games like FF6, but they had really great stories/scenarios and characters.

I don't want to be a downer on anyone excited about this, it probably does have a very cozy familiar feel but a lot of your appreciation may come down to nostalgia. The gameplay itself I am not concerned about. A few things that make a great RPG are gameplay, art style, characters, story, and music. I know DQ3 has gameplay, music, and art that I appreciate. It's the others that are critical that I may not be able to go out and splurge day 1 blindly for

James Sawyer Ford James Sawyer Ford it’s why I never understood the comparisons between FF and DQ over the years. Most of DQ has extremely milquetoast and straightforward plot developments and lore.

I will eventually buy this on a sale because I know it’s a great classic and I want to experience it, but I am going to find a way to play through it as fast as possible, whether that means 2x game speed or something else.

I've never played the original. A few reviews I've watched decided to not talk about the story to avoid spoilers. To me, that suggests that it's either good or they're dodging it.

I like that the jobs are pretty basic and you can get by with different combinations, including the classic Hero/Warrior/Mage/Priest.

Don't like random encounters. Maybe a setting for that will be patched in.

Still pretty hyped for the game.

fwiw the original game didn't have much of a story to begin with, think of it like final fantasy 1. You go to a bunch of places, you kill monsters and bosses, you level up and find gear and learn spells. Yes there are npcs and stuff but the plot is very basic.

It's gonna be a visually amazing game that's mechanic and battle heavy. Debut of the job system for DQ. Some people rate it top 3, I don't like it that much but it can't be worse than 2 and 6.

I bought a sex doll, but I keep it inflated 100% of the time and use it like a regular wife
What's the problem with 6? I always see it being mentioned as one of the worst but I thought it was very nice, much better than 7.

Still a NES game at heart. Think they added some story stuff for the remake but I wouldn't expect much.

Oh no, you didn't.
I loved DQ7 on 3DS. It was really magical and i don't have nostalgia for Dragon Quest since i've never played it back in the day.

Not saying it's bad or anything, just waaaay too slow for my tastes. I found 6 pacing to be better, and the characters and world felt cool to me. Just don't get the hate towards it.

Yep, I liked VI as well, certainly better vs PS1 DQ VII. For me it’s the following order:
  1. DQ VIII
  2. DQ V DS or PS2
  3. DQ XI S version
  4. DQ IV SFC or mobile
  5. DQ VI DS
  6. DQ VII 3DS
  7. DQ III SFC
  8. DQ VII PS1
  9. NES DQ III
  10. DQ IX
  11. II -> I

Above is very subjective of course. I don’t like IX much at all, for example.

My man, we have the same taste lol. I think my ranking would be more or less the same, just with the top 3 switching places depending on the mood. Those 3 games are so good that it's hard for me to pick a favorite.

I didn't really like IX either. Found it to be a bit too multiplayer focused and lacking on story, plus I really didn't like the gyaru fairy. :goog_relieved:

DQ IV SFC or mobile
Are you excluding the DS version because of the lack of party chat? Mind you, there's a patch to restore it.

Or is it just one of Phil's balls in my throat?

Amazon has been really bad for people last couple of months. I've seen people on GAF and elsewhere report about how they got last minute emails about their games being delayed a week or so on Amazon where no other retailer had that kind of an issue.

The last Dragon Quest I played was X (Offline version) last year when the English patch surfaced. The game was an absolute treat, and it was fun to finally play the "missing" Dragon Quest since the game never released here in the States. And I also played DQ Monsters 3, which was based on the fourth game and also great.

I'm really looking forward to this game. Where the hell is my key, GMG? I do have a massive amount of nostalgia for this one, so I won't be the right person to ask about how good this game is without being tinted by that. I was also glad to hear that the first two games were being remade in the same engine, although the second game is one of my least favorite Dragon Quests. Hopefully good sales mean that the fourth, fifth, and sixth games get remade as well. My personal list of the mainline titles goes:
  1. IV
  2. V
  3. III
  4. VIII
  5. I
  6. IX
  7. X
  8. XI
  9. II
  10. VI
  11. VII
Probably the most controversial ranking of all time lol

Have never played 3 in its entirety but I always liked how the world building 1&2 was quite sparse. Left a lot to the imagination but in a good way that made the world quite mysterious. These days you'd get like ten side story books and an anime series.
