Dragon Quest III HD-2D Remake |OT| Timeless JRPG that's fun for body types A and B alike

DQIX will always be good for having monsters appear on the map. That was the best thing DQ ever added.

I forgot to even look to see if they did that with this.

Anyone else waiting on GMG to supply their preorder code?

I hope I don't lose my preorder bonus because of them..
The seeds for stat boosts? That’s a nice perk. Preload wasn’t available on Steam yesterday.

Gentlemen, we can rebuild it. We have the capability to make the world's first enhanced store. Steam will be that store. Better than it was before.
How is it? Can it be enjoyed as a single-player game?
It's a single player game only, there is no multiplayer in that version. They tweaked the formula here so that it's balanced as a single player experience, and they removed most of the MMORPG-esque fetch quests and whatnot.

Graphically it looks similar to IX (weird kind of chibi style). It's a fun kind of "what could have been", meaning if this came out after 9 but before 11. The story is pretty good. Without getting too spoilery, you are the chosen one, but you die and get reincarnated as someone from another race - you then gather companions and travel the world collecting medals from each of the kingdoms. The class system was honestly pretty great, and the advanced job classes have their own storylines that are pretty involved.

I played on my hacked Switch (I have a legitimate cartridge I bought from Japan), but the recommended way is to create a Steam account in Japan to buy the game and load the translation on top of that.

I bought a sex doll, but I keep it inflated 100% of the time and use it like a regular wife
Many thanks for the answer jshackles jshackles . Sadly, I thought you were talking about the normal version and not the chibi one. I'll look into that one tho, might be fun specially if it's tailored as a single player game.

My man, we have the same taste lol. I think my ranking would be more or less the same, just with the top 3 switching places depending on the mood. Those 3 games are so good that it's hard for me to pick a favorite.

I didn't really like IX either. Found it to be a bit too multiplayer focused and lacking on story, plus I really didn't like the gyaru fairy. :goog_relieved:

Are you exclusing the DS version because of the lack of party chat? Mind you, there's a patch to restore it.

Yep, it was the party chat! Didn’t realize there was a mod for that! Definitely will have to check that out even if I am unlikely to play through the game any time soon.

The last Dragon Quest I played was X (Offline version) last year when the English patch surfaced. The game was an absolute treat, and it was fun to finally play the "missing" Dragon Quest since the game never released here in the States. And I also played DQ Monsters 3, which was based on the fourth game and also great.

I'm really looking forward to this game. Where the hell is my key, GMG? I do have a massive amount of nostalgia for this one, so I won't be the right person to ask about how good this game is without being tinted by that. I was also glad to hear that the first two games were being remade in the same engine, although the second game is one of my least favorite Dragon Quests. Hopefully good sales mean that the fourth, fifth, and sixth games get remade as well. My personal list of the mainline titles goes:
  1. IV
  2. V
  3. III
  4. VIII
  5. I
  6. IX
  7. X
  8. XI
  9. II
  10. VI
  11. VII
Probably the most controversial ranking of all time lol
lol, that’s what they mean different strokes for different folks. This would not be my list at all, but hey, any DQ series fan is welcomed!!! 😁

I do need to try the DQ X offline at some point but I don’t like the chibi model look.

Amazon has been really bad for people last couple of months. I've seen people on GAF and elsewhere report about how they got last minute emails about their games being delayed a week or so on Amazon where no other retailer had that kind of an issue.
Yup I just canceled mine and just bought from Argos, getting pissed with Amazon lately....I also canceled my stalker pre order and ordered from another place....

I've played it for 20+ hours so far. It's really good overall. People who absolutely hate random battles or need more dynamic storytelling may not like it, but I think most RPG fans will have a great time.

I started with Gadabout, Priest, Monster Tamer. Was very relieved once I finally reclassed that Gadabout to Sage because she suuuucked before then! But sometimes in a funny way, like making up spells on the spot.

Gonna wait for impressions from someone with no nostalgia

From what I’ve read, this game has zero character development and very little story
There's not a lot of story, without spoilers, once you get your ship and the 'main quest', it gets better.

But think about this game as an Elden ring of jrpgs. You need to talk to everyone and figure out what the hell to do and get some bit of lore.

They added an objective marker in the remake though

The story in the DQ games (especially the older ones) is often less about plot and more about the writing and characters on a micro scale. The worldbuilding is nice, the towns are diverse, and the writing is usually really charming and occasionally funny. I consider all this to be good storytelling, even when the plot itself is pretty simple. Similar to EarthBound.

Or is it just one of Phil's balls in my throat?
Reportedly, the Switch version takes a performance hit over the game on PS5/SX.

Some comparison pics via Era. In a vacuum, it probably looks perfectly fine on Switch. So, I don't think Switch owners should have much to worry about. Witcher 3, this isn't.

The NES original will always hold a special place in my heart. It was my first-ever RPG. I spent countless hours first watching my older brother and his friend play it, and then playing through it myself at the age of 5-6 years old. I was able to beat it by just memorizing what to do.

It's tough to go back to nowadays because of the incredibly slow walking speed. But it has aged significantly better than DQ1, which is almost unplayable nowadays.

It looks very nice overall on Switch but it does chug when in some of the towns which can be effect-heavy, particularly at night with the fireflies and the main character's lantern.

Load times are thankfully good.

Cores, shaders and BIOS oh my!
They really couldn't have a running animation, it's just walking faster? Grandia and Xenogears and the like had that all those years ago (to compare RPGs that had 3D backgrounds with sprite characters).

What time is it?
Lunar without the Working Designs voiceworks and songs seems like a poor choice on thier part.

Lunar is pretty funny as no one will be happy. I lot of people don't like Vic's translation work and I'm pretty sure this port is based on the Playstation version and not the SEGA CD version which a lot of people find inferior.

If this game is half as fun to play as Star Ocean 2 was, I need it. That game showed me how RPG remakes have to be done. The sheer accessibility of it, pretty much everything, SO2R was a GOTY contender for me.

Caved and bought it. Always intended on buying it but was thrown off by a few things.

So many JRPGs in the last couple of months, none of which I've finished, but hopefully one that goes back to the roots will be a refreshing change.

Started playing this last night. I'm not super far in yet, but I already love how interconnected everything in the first area is, with the multiple ways to get into the tower dungeon.

I initially rolled a Gadabout, but they seemed semi-useless, so I rerolled a Warrior in their place. I'm sure this will inevitably come back to bite me when the Gadabout gets awesome ten levels in, or whatever the gimmick is going to be.

Yeah, it’s more than good enough and I want to have a physical copy of Nintendo console just because.

I will be playing it on the Deck or Ally though.

Just got my copy from Green Man, downloading now!

Gadabouts are as miserable as ever but they're the only class that can naturally change into the very very good Sage class at Level 20. Thankfully there's an item that lets you do that from any class as well (and I hear there are more of them in this version), so you don't necessarily have to go that route.

Has anyone gotten the monster handler to do anything cool? I got mine to lvl 7 but so far he only has a heal spell and the stun thing

Does this have any voiced dialogue in the remake?

That could make or break it for me honestly.
Some voiced dialog, but not all. Just key moments, it seems. Maybe like 5% of the total text.

I was debating on taking it or not. I went with the traditional boring hero/warrior/priest/mage

Not too late to change my mind if anyone thinks the monster handler is fun and worth it
