Dragon Quest III HD-2D Remake |OT| Timeless JRPG that's fun for body types A and B alike

Yes, the rendering engine here is pretty barebones. Very strange.

I was able to find an ultrawide patch, which I linked to on the last page:

since it allows me to run the game at arbitrary resolutions, it might also work for 4K (though I haven't tried it). I'm running it at 5120x1440 now and it looks incredible. Literally just a drag/drop into the binary folder.
Thanks a lot! Will try this tomorrow.

Also only Square can deliver a remake that feels both very good AND very shitty.

You know what, the ultra fast battles could have been a bit more faster. The attack connecting animation takes half a second too long, especially considering the high frequency of random battles.

Other than that, absolutely gorgeous, the HD 2D style is beautiful.
They should have just put a proper autobattling mode

So, any opinion on the game? How do you guys like it? Isn't it too old school with the frequent encounters?
There are 3 battle speeds (Normal, Fast, Ultra Fast) that REALLY help with the random encounters. TBH if it wasn't for ultra fast mode I'd probably skip it

The encounter rate is very high, it makes exploring the overworld a total slog. It's just barely tolerable with auto battle + the fastest battle speed IMO.

It's a very charming old school JRPG that's light on story/character development and heavy on combat/exploration without a lot of hand holding. If that sounds like your thing then it's worth playing.

I like this, but to be honest I still prefer the SFC / GBC version. For one, I prefer those versions graphics, and for two this version feels super hand holdy and easy.

I wish there was an option to turn the depth of field effect off.

I might be too spoiled by modern times for this. Not graphic wise....I am A-Ok with the graphics. I need story though. I don't know how deep this is, but starting off its too basic for my tastes.

I like a bit more than, "Wake up and go see the king." and having party members that are basic ass.

I'm not saying I need every year of a character's life detailed....but I'd like just a bit more than this.

I like some of the other Dragon Quest games, working on Cursed King and still working on Elusive Age. My problem with the games....I've never finished one, too much a grind. I always drop them for months if not longer.

DQ3 doesn't have deep story but it has it charm like how when you get King's crown back h just ask you if you want to be king and you can actually accept and become one and found it hilarious.

How is Spanish translation for this? I read on X that Spain or Latam version (or both?) removed the body Type nonsense, is that true?

Like I said earlier in the thread, this game gives you so much choice and agency in comparison to modern RPGs

I'd like to thank the asshole who left piles of cheap low-level equipment scattered across every continent. I love taking the time to sell all my useless crap.

Dragon Quest III is not really character driven or plot heavy game…..it meant to be an adventure, more specifically your adventure.

I really like the way the lamp / torches look at night, aesthetically very pleasing.

But what I don't like is the frequency of these fucking random battles, even with Holy Water, jeesusss..

Wait a fucking second.

I can change my party after the initial 4 selection?

Will the new member start at level 1 again?
Lol go to patty's party planning place, you can make as many party members as you want. (And yes they all start at level 1 but with high level equipment they catch up fast)

Yep but they retain 50% of their stats. I'm probably gonna turn my warrior into a priest to end up with a priest on steroids.

Why the fuck is all the equipment I find around the world always so shitty compared to what I already have. It's all very early game armors of weapons.

I guess minor spoilers for early-ish game:

Better yet, you can change your character class at Alltrades Abbey. They start back at level 1 but keep all the abilities/spells they've learned, and they start with half the stats they were at.

I found the equipment I find in secret spots now sucks. Only the equipment I find in dungeons is useful

I've found several upgrades in the sparkly spots that weren't available in the equivalent level shops, but about 95% of it is trash. You do end up finding a lot of seeds though, which is a big difference from the original game. In the OG getting seeds was like pulling teeth.

I've finally reached the point I can switch classes. I've heard so many good things about the monster wrangler so I'm gonna switch my warrior to it tonight and go monster hunting!

Monster Wrangler is excellent. Their skill they get after catching 20 monsters is honestly pretty OP. As far as I can tell it does physical damage based on your character level and the # of monsters you've captured. I'm about 20 hours in and this is still the highest damage single target attack I have.

BTW am I the only one who turned the VA volume to 0 before starting the game and left it there? I have literally never felt that voice acting makes this kind of game better.

And they eventually get a skill for double actions in a turn! That's pretty OP.

As far as the voice acting, I always forget about it until it blasts in my headset lol

Alright, kinda had to rush through the end-game so I can get to other games, too many things too little time.

Really enjoyed my time with this, the game naturally ends with a massive splash screen for the I + II HD release.

Posting some final screens under tags so there's no accidental spoilers.

I might do the same but before that I need get the item to also turn my Mage to Sage.

Yep, that's the plan for tonight. Turn Warrior to Monster Wrangler, hunt all monsters I've missed. Tower of transcendence for the words of wisdom scroll and turn my mage to sage.

I'm also thinking of getting rid of my priest since the hero will have omniheal eventually. I'm thinking of turning her into a thief for a while for some abilities like footpad and maybe work towards a martial artist

Not sure if this has been posted yet:

This mod aims to create the most authentic original experience within the HD-2D remake.

This (*will eventually) includes a full overhaul of the game's localization, character designs, etc to most accurately reflect the original artwork & language of the 1989 classic and bring forth that vision in to the modern age.

Boy, I've missed like a LOT of monsters. Holy cow. Looked up a guide online because I've been searching and searching for them to nearly no avail - nope turns out I've missed almost 100 I could have got by now.

Yeah...that OCD is driving me insane trying to collect them all as I go.
I say to myself "dude...just go further and we can COME BACK..." nah bruh...stop being a lazy lil' shit! Now, walk around that area in a circle again for another two hours...but before you do douse yourself in this musk.

Did you start with a monster wrangler in your party?

I did! And while their typical compliment of skills they learn by leveling up are generally pretty decent, they're easily the weakest party member I have (Wizard and Sage being the others). So - off to find more monsters!

Yeah, I've looked at a monsters guide since I missed a lot of them as well. Most were because it wasn't the right time of the day

The skills they gain through the monster collection is where it's at
