Dragon Quest III HD-2D Remake |OT| Timeless JRPG that's fun for body types A and B alike

Quick question for those who have a Monster Wrangler class at 20...

Hero
Thief > Martial Artist
Priest > Sage
Monster Wrangler > ?????

What is a recommended vocation to transition to with the Monster Wrangler?
Why not just keep monster wrangler in case there's some cool late game abilities?

Ok Gaf, should I grab this or the new Y's? Gonna have 6 weeks off work(surgery). Didn't like Y's 9 but thought 8 was awesome. Loved Dragon Quest 8 and 11. Was raised on old school rpgs but haven't been able to get into one lately. Thought sea of stars was good but lost interest. Can you hunt metal slimes in this one?

Yes there are metal slimes and metal babbles but they're fairly rare

Actually a better question for you all is should I pick up Dragon Quest 3hd, Octopath Traveller 2 or maybe Unicorn Overlord? lol

It not helpful but I personally picked up all three......My favourite is Unicorn Overlord but you need ask yourself what you in mood for because all these three games are very different from each other.

For folks picking up the physical version, the ESRB edition doesn't come with interior cover art like the CERO release. If that's important to you, you should consider importing the CERO physical version, as it comes with English language support (that's what I'll be doing at least).

Oh, great catch! I was about to order the Switch physical. To Play-Asia I go!

All 3 are probably worth picking up. Demos are available for both OT2 and UO on PSN. I bought OT2 on sale, but haven't started it yet, and I have UO wishlisted. There are a few members here at GAF who consider Unicorn Overlord GOTY material.

Octopath II was my favorite between that and Unicorn, but both are very good. DQ III is a classic and this will be by far the best version. So it's very hard to decide.

If you want more strategy go with Unicorn, newer take on classics, Octopath and for that refined classic feel, DQ3.

One consideration is that you can pick up Unicorn and Octopath cheaper vs DQ3 if they matters. Also Star Ocean 2 Remake was very good as well for similar kinds of vibes.

Thanks for the info. Ya not big on strategy rpgs anymore. Watched the unicorn overlord trailer and don't think that one's for me. Gonna have a go at Octopath 2 demo next.

Octopath 2 is pretty great. I also recommend trying Star Ocean 2 and Chained Echoes. The latter is a new release but I enjoyed it a lot more va Sea of Stars.

I also very much recommend Wandering Sword which is a Chinese take on the new 2D-HD pixel art. It's a Wuxia RPG and it's great.

I will check out the demo of star ocean 2 as well.

Well I tried all demos I could and Star ocean kind of got my attention right away. At first I was WTF with the hd redone backgrounds with the old school 2d sprites but it grew on me and it's really cool actually. I think I'm going to dive into that one first. Is it a pretty meaty RPG? Lots of armor's and weapons to try out etc?

It's a pretty great JRPG. As far as armor and weapons, it's going to be fairly standard fare for its time, but combat system and story are very good.

Ya that's fair, guess by meaty I should have said stuff to do, side quests etc. looking online it seems it's around. Looks like it's around 60 hrs for 100% completion so for me since I'm slower I should closer to 100 hrs lol

Oh yeah, there is plenty to do and it's a good sized RPG. Definitely worth the time investment.

Nice, may buy octopath 2 as well seeing as I could buy both for not much more than Dragon Quest 3. lol That should give me plenty of JRPG goodness while I'm laid out for 6 weeks. Thanks for all your help!

That's another great game. And good luck!

Yeah. Gonna grab the physical version for PS5 probably next month when I'm doing my last round of imports from Japan. Btw, here's a closer look at the reversible cover art.

Yeah, it really does!

I'm not sure, tbh. Best to ask PlayAsia support before ordering it from them I guess. Personally I'll go with the CERO release and plan on grabbing it from Amazon JP.
Good point, I will shoot them an email. I got a bunch of games in my cart and going to order some stuff.

Btw, they got 3 games for $70 deal going on right now for whole bunch of stuff. It's really not bad at all.

I now have $200 or so worth of games with DQ in my cart, lol.

Well shit. You shouldn't have told me that. Now I'll have to order some of the stuff I held off on getting from them (mostly Switch VNs). I see that they also have free shipping until November 18. Oh boy... 😅

Love:
Terrain is varied and not flat like the original
Multiple appearance options for each of the classes, makes them feel more unique
The pre-order DLC thing having the shoes that give you EXP for just walking around, fun way to cheese the beginning of the game

I found an ultrawide mod that works on PC, game is looking wonderful in 32:9 but has some weird text positioning issues that can hopefully be ironed out. Beautiful though.

EDIT: this is the mod, if anyone is curious. Was originally made for Persona 3 Reloaded, but works for this game too.

My copy's probably gonna arrive some time next week, can't wait to dive into this.

Considering the easy difficulty has invulnerability might as well pick classes with the strongest damage output and low defense :messenger_beaming:

No, I was speaking in general about the main entries. Don't want to spoil anything, but usually the alleged baddie isn't the real threat, and after they are exposed the difficulty tends to ramp up.

Yeah I've played about 5 DQ games, that seems to be the tradition. I've never played III though.

Made it to the part where I got the ship, and I'm searching for the orbs. Man, this game is really great.

What's the verdict on difficulty? Normal or Draconian? I played the OG NES version back ages ago and found it hard but enjoyable.

If I do a hero, warrior, mage, cleric, party am I missing out? Should I mix the classes up a bit?

This game has been great. Classic Dragon Quest and classic JRPG mechanics.

Thief has been a good class. It can blind a group of enemies and they can steal from a monster after battle. I'd say mix it up.

Do characters gain new skills after lvl 20?

I just got the ability to change vocations and I'm wondering if there's any reason to wait….presumably a mage that changes to a priest won't gain anymore mage skills

I see that the stat gains seem to slow down massively at lvl 20, so good to reset one character at a time?

Playing it on Draconian and i'm getting my ass handed to me constantly... that said... I grinded like 5 hours clean. Now I'm dominating and issuing Big Dick Orders.
I'm also drunk, rn... forgive my wording...

I'm at level 24 on my hero and the rest of my party is 20-22, I've been rotating members in and out. So far I feel like my martial artist is the weakest of the group (could be due to not having as many seeds invested as the rest of the group). Thief and monster wrangler both feel very useful, thief I would say is probably the most essential role you can have just for padfoot and treasure detection, I'm getting to the point where monster defense is out scaling the boomerang class weapons damage so i might class swap them soon. The second strongest combatant I have after the hero is my wizard/mage. Priest I can take or leave, it actually feels like they're learning spells at a different pace than I remember because I'm starting to need full party healing and my priest doesn't have it yet.
