Dragon Quest VIII launches in Japan: Pics inside!

Ok, so this might not look very impressive at first. But keep in mind that myself and these people in the pictures live in a tiny farming village in the boonies of Japan.

6:50 AM, cars lined up outside and everyone is waiting in their car since it's windy and rainy.
(there were actually 2 HS kids there with BIKES...I give them a lot of credit for riding in this weather just to get their DQ on)

The first set of 7am buyers for the day. (last 2 pics are smaller because photobucket resized them since they were over 250k :\)

As I left one after another cars kept pulling up, someone would jump out and the line inside would continue to be filled with people.

*edit* had to remove the pictures as my monthly bandwith at photobucket went from 0-60% in 6 hours ^^;; I still need it for other stuff so, unless someone wants to host the pics, they're gone for now.

Woot, thanks for pics. I felt like I was there. So wish I could play this in language I could understand right now!

P.S. Sadly he right, i loved all DQ but never could finish 7 and I tried twice :(

Hope the game's good so that they won't have wasted their time like VII

Just got back from the launch festivities at Shibuya Tsutaya.

300 people waiting in line + Yoichi Wada (Square Enix president) + Yuji Horii (DQ creator) + Anoop Gantayat (IGN idol) = good times

I'm damn tired now though. Got there at 6:15am, after only two and a half hours of sleep...

Lots and lots and LOTS of people waited in line from as early as 11pm last night:

Wada (Squeenix president) and Horii (DQ creator) were on-hand for the "official" launch countdown:

This dude waited in line all night to be the first person to buy the game when the registers officially opened at 7am:

I was just gonna ask, how limited is the slime controller? Anyone snag it? Anyone coming home for the holidays wanna snag one for a fellow GAFer? :D

It's difficult to say how rare it is. This was clearly the official DQ8 event, since Wada and Horii were there, so it could be in small numbers elsewhere. My controller's the mail and will be here in 12 hours or so.

I don't think it's that limited. We had a ton up here.

Anyways after using it for 30 mins, I feel it's safe to say that you will keep the controller on your shelf and admire it...not play with it. The controller is really uncomfortable to use, the L1/R1/L2/R2 button placement is bad, the d-pad is really stiff and worthless and the analogue sticks are tiny and loose. To press triangle (which you do a lot in DQ games) I had to keep streching my thumb up to hit it.

It's nice looking, but I'm going back to the standard DS for the rest of my DQ experience.

It's nice living in a small town. I remember when I was in Okinawa, I was able to go to Family Mart on launch day, pick FFX up, and leave in 2 minutes.

Awesome. I'm still way behind on Dragon Quest, though, having only played up through III on GB/C. The NES Dragon Warrior graphics scare me, and waiting for some amateur translation of PS1 DQ IV is quite the indefinite wait.

I wonder how many hours it takes for you to actually DO stuff. Like with VII, where you had to play 40 hours before getting the job system or whatever.

NES graphics > DQVII / IV remake

Clearly lots of "wonder goo" was emitted from fans who purchased this game HAW HAW HAW

(No? Nothing? I tried.)

I'm awaiting impressions. This is the only Japanese RPG I'm actually interested in.

Well I don't really want to give impressions until I really get somewhere in the game and being DQ that might be many hours down the road.

I did the first story quest + first dungeon which was about 3 hours logged before lunch. Basically it's DQ with really nice 3d graphics. I think the overworld is streamed but I need to double check that now, if it is then it's AWESOME because it's the entire world with no loading, if not, well the overworld areas with no loading are still pretty large and battle transition speed is fine. Battle animations are really top-notch and all the monsters so far have tons of character.

Ok, now back to the game.

"psp ads?"

yup, but still no preorders

and no that ain't me - although i wish it were.... nt

Sad. It's just like the attack of the Star Wars nerds.

And who are you to judge about the attitude from others? why is sad? why do you use words like "nerds" to define other persons?.

However, high price from lik sank is barely stopping me of buying this now... but I´m sure I will get it in one month as maximum (maybe it´s a better idea to let someone to make some faq to help me a little to navigate through the game).

It's awesome how important is DQ VIII in the lifes of Japanese people...I wish we had received them on Europe earlier since evrything Toriyama did was also instant classic here.

They line up for anything over there.

Not really, only the major stuff. No different than anywhere else, except when you take into account the population density in certain regions it looks like all of Japan is lined up.

Err maybe the gamers, it's not like an every day way of life to the average person. Is GTA a way of life for the average person in the US?

What? I don't think it's that important to EVERYONE there
