And who are you to judge about the attitude from others? why is sad? why do you use words like "nerds" to define other persons?

Because they're fucking nerds. That's why.
What's wrong with nerds? If some guy devotes his whole life to Star Trek or DQ8 i got no problem with that. Chances are that if you make 10 posts a day on a gaming forum you're a nerd yourself :) So who cares?

Then you have absolutely no taste.

Dragon Questi VII had crappy visuals along with low quality music. Not to mention and archaic battle system.

Atleast DQVIII seems to be going in a better direction.

Sure, you may have not -liked- it but to say it was one of the WORST means you either played very few games or are completely off your rocker.

or even 27, hey snapty :)

one thing i didn't get about the nerd....

why go to a DQ8 launch dressed as a Gundam character?

Next week : DCharlie goes to a Star Wars convention dressed as a hobbit.... (inevitably given my height and fashion sense! ;) )

They sure were having fun with Jessica. Not surprising to see Level-5 put in alternative costumes.

That purple one looks like Erdrick's, i mean, Loto's armor...

I want to play this game, it looks really cool actually. For the record I thought dragon quest 7 was a craptacular waste of time myself. I rented it , played for 3 hours and never got into a single random battle nor did anything interesting in it. Plus they released that mess after FF9 had allready come out and well it's graphics were god awful, it had unnessecary ugly CG to boot. Normally I don't hold things like that against a game but in DQ7's case it really was getting in the way of my enjoyment of the game.

On the other hand before someone bitches, I played some DQ5 on an emulator in english and it actually seemed sort of fun.

"Haha, he got the attention he wanted though, right?"

depends - he might have been out looking for a bride... in which case he failed miserably! :)

So does anyone who bought the game have any initial comments so far?

I won't be getting my copy until Psyvariar 2 ships...

It's Dragon Quest. Eight!

Um ... it's pretty good but expect to level, and stuff. Graphics are lovely but concessions to modern gameplay expectations are few and far between.

How's the voice acting? Cutscenes? Storytelling?

None, perfunctory, and there.

This game uses NES SFX, for Chrissake. The Cinematic RPG Experience of 2004 it ain't.

In its defense, DQs are more about characterization than narrative, and that's fine so far.

you could play with a guide or via pot luck guessing, but you could get the same equivalent experience by sandpapering your own testicles....

So I suppose this isn't import friendly, eh? I don't want to wait 1 year just to play it...

It's about as import-friendly as any other Japanese rpg. I mean for most part you just keep tapping circle for the random battles and level up if your getting beat. Usually the next place to go to is the next place you find while walking down a path, but I guess that could get confusing.

The story is pretty straight-forward. I dunno, for people who know zero Japanese it's probably unplayable but the people with 6 months of the language under their belt who can get through FF imports should have no problems here.

Have they added anything new since Dragon Quest VII? Any new innovations? I really like Toriyama's artwork.

I actually wasn't enjoying the game until I got about 8 hours in. Now, I'm totally loving it. It's totally an old-school RPG in 3D, complete with a helping of RPG cliches. Very basic battle system, but it starts getting more complicated once you start learning spells. It's also a good idea to set it so you can give commands to every character (I went through the first six hours thinking you could only give commands to the main character with the computer controlling the rest of the characters -- I didn't like the game this way).

It's somewhat hard to judge the visuals because PS2 games all look like garbage on my television. The framerate drops down during the more complex town scenes, but it tends to hold still during the most impressive part of the game -- the vast overworld, which streams in as you move. The game supports widescreen, by the way.

I also really love the little animated cinema scenes that play every now and then. They're a total riot. I just wish there were voices. Voices would be perfect for this game.

Not to mention and archaic battle system.

By archaic, you mean "not of your tastes". There's absolutely no reason why a battle system where you only see the monsters should be considered archaic. Besides, the battles required more strategy and were quicker than a typical Final Fantasy battle.

The game sold 4 million copies in Japan, and almost everyone loved it (demonstrated by magazine reviews and just general word of mouth review). Are you going to keep being in denial about the game's quality?

It's a strangely obnoxious tradition DQ now has that sets all of the party AI to auto on default except for the main protagonist. I also spent several hours playing DW7 worried that my party was a bunch of NPC's that would abandon me soon after they arrive until I discovered AI control in the menu settings. You just have to set new members up to manual control the moment they join, something that likely may never leave the franchise. I'd have to double check, but I believe DQ5r and later SNES entries also set AI on by default as well.

I'd love a description of the overworld and dungeon layouts. As large and bewildering as the screens suggest?

I don't remember the game getting rave reviews in America. In Japan it's like a religion, but I think if it was released under a diffrent name noone would of gave a shit about it. I'm not fond of pokemon either which sells really well. Anyways, I didn't like the visuals and the music quality was poor. I just expected better. I think Chrono Cross is far superior in every way.

I've seen a lot of grumbling about DQ7 on Japanese message boards. Japanese magazines are pretty timid about giving bad reviews to games in established franchises, so I'm not sure their reviews can be taken as representative.

Don't hear what was poor about the music quality though (the music quantity is another matter)

Funny, because most people consider Chrono Cross to be complete crap. :lol

Well, the ten guys that bought that flop anyway. :D

Chrono Cross, is by far my favorite JRPG. And one of my favorite games period.

In any case I cant fucking wait to play this.

what a bizarre argument. why do CC and DQ have to fight it out? it makes no sense. =P

anyone who is arguing that DQ isn't archaic -- get a grip. the whole point of the series is that it resists innovation. it's intentional. if you like that, fine, but come on.

No, by "archaic," he means archaic. That shit's Triassic, yo.

I would have waited in line all night too for this game. People here in the US just don't appreciate the greatness of this series.

Also, that chick is hot.

I didn't realize this game was out already.

DQ is always hyped up majorly in Japan, any idea on what kind of numbers it did?
