Dragon Quest VIII launches in Japan: Pics inside!

what a bizarre argument. why do CC and DQ have to fight it out? it makes no sense. =P

I think both games are serious contenders for a "it's cool the hate" title, so it's a pretty fair comparison. :)

Quick question about Japanese culture for anyone in the know... Do they have nerds there? The people in North America standing in line-ups for Halo 2 are pathetic nerds. Are there some Japanese people right now thinking the same thing regarding the DQVIII hype? Or is everyone as creepy-happy and uncaring as they seem?

Yes. Can you name any country that doesn't have nerds?

I don't know why you hang around boards like this then :lol

Well, the difference is that most Japanese people don't see Dragon Quest as being the hardcore nerd type of evil that westerners think of other gamers. Gaming has been mainstream since the 80s in Japan, so gaming nerds are just the same as movie nerds, F1 nerds, music nerds etc. There's nothing "pathetic" about waiting in line for the release of a game. It's no more pathetic than going to see a new movie on its premier day, or queueing up to see your favourite band's gig.

at what point did playing games become nerdy?

I grew up with Pong/Invaders etc... and EVERYONE was into games around that time and i don't recall people being laughed at for enjoying the new form of entertainment.

But at some point it just stopped being cool - when and why did this happen?
Any ideas?

Finally got my hands on DQVIII, man the game looks so nice in motion. It just has such a high production value look to it. Even the menus and little extras, everything is so smooth looking.

From the start of the game, how long does it take until -

- you get in a battle
- you can use skill points towards different jobs or whatever the deal is

Also has anyone tried the monster scouting?

Battle: almost immediately.
Skill points: level 3 or 4.
Monster scouting: still absent after 8-10 hours.

Is this saying that they shipped/sold 3M in the first three days (versus DQVII's slightly over 4M)

DQVII's 4M was the total amount sold, not the first day/3days/week number, iirc.

I didn't mind DQ7 as much as some people did, but this alone makes DQ8 the better game.

Bebpo told me to clarify so: there is a single battle you fight in the introduction, then you have like 45 minutes or so of running around inside the town before you get out to the overworld and head towards the next dungeon. So "about an hour" might be a more fair answer. Still, no DQVII-style pacing nightmare.

Damn, am I the only one that didn't have a problem with the pacing in DQ7? I know, I know, it takes 3 hours to get to the first battle, but I seriously didn't notice. :P

Damn it, why don't they show other characters' alternate costumes? The default costumes look like poop to me, especially the one on the Trunks look-alike.

Basically, when video games became associated with this:

What? I don't think it's that important to EVERYONE there
Still, it's got mainstream appreciation that crosses gender and generation gaps. Maybe less so nowadays (I'd be willing to wager that fewer older people/girls own PS2s as opposed to Famicoms), but still. There are Dorakue geeks, yes, but it's not just them.

actually a lot of adults who had dropped gaming bought new PS1s to play VII so it'll be interesting to see if VIII spurs console sales.

this is perhaps why they don't notice the total lack of evolution. they don't play any other games. =P
