Dragon's Dogma |OT| For the night is dark and full of terrors

That's what I'm wondering because there's been no information that I've seen on NG+ for DD. All I know is that the enemies don't scale to your level, period. It may be that they get boosted in NG+ but there's been nothing to allude to that yet.

It'll be awhile before I get to a NG+, but if I knew enemies got a boost, I may rush to NG+ for the extra challenge. Not that it's painfully easy, or anything, but I feel the large beasts fall too quickly when I am having a great time fighting them.

I believe it's Arcteryx's Pawn, Cate the Mage. She is insanely cocky, I love it.

Just started this.

I feel as if I've been waiting to play this game my entire life. Open world, great combat, challenge out the wazoo, beautiful world.

I think I may have made a mistake picking the mage class though. Can I switch it up later or should I reroll now?

You can freely switch vocations at level 10, once you get to the city.

Not really digging the mage either, the spell effects are cool but it's so uninvolving.

So, did the PS3 version turn out to perform better than the demo?
I want to say yes but man . . . in Gran Soren the framerate sometimes dips into the teens, or lower. It's a fucking slideshow at times for no apparent reason.

I was afraid it would play that way. Choosing a hybrid magic class might be the way to go for those dissatisfied with mage combat.

I play as a ranger, so I can be as involved or removed from combat as I wish.

I'm magick archer right now, which has ease-of-use as one of its selling points. Otherwise I think I might switch to Ranger, I found a longbow in the dungeon below the Pawn Base.

I want to be a magic archer or magic sword guy. Mage right now seems more support-y. Heck, the first pawn they gave me was a mage.

Still. I'm sort of in awe of this game right now. My only wish is that it was on the PC so I could mod the UI. Oh, and sort of still wish it was co-op. But, other than that I'm loving the hell out of it.

I think I might main Mystic Knight now. Although I'm loving the high level skills Sorc is getting one being the meteor storm one. Jesus a poor Chimera couldnt even stand up after getting hit with it.

But I have a question do you really have to swicth back and forth between sword and staff? How annoying :/

I really wouldn't say a mage is support-y. Espically once you get into higher magic and on to Sorc.

The nice thing about not having fast travel is it makes you weigh the consequences of all your actions. I know you could artificially limit yourself from doing it, but the removal of the option adds to to sense of survival and tension and ultimately the payoff feeling at the end of a successful journey when you reach the intended destination. When we finally made it to the gates of Gran Soren doing The Courier, I remember this huge sigh of relief when I was basked with the torchlights. And that was just in the first couple of hours in the game. I'll take that feeling over convenience any day.

I agree. I could see them possibly adding horses or carriages, but as long as they keep the danger of travel.

Think of the taxis in GTA 4 without the option to bypass them.

There could even be a "mini game" of sorts to defend the carriage from attack.

Presumably bandits can set up traps like the boulder one requiring you to get out of the carriage before it gets demolished.

Or say the carriage takes damage, you can repair a broken wheel by gathering wood and repairing it.

Magic Archer is fun but I switched back to regular archer for two reasons.

1. Mainly becuase I neglected to learn new skills or max out the vocational rank

2. manually aiming arrows and hitting targets feels so much better than lock on of basic magic arrows.

I'll switch back to magic archer once I max my vocational rank, then go either ranger or assasin.

See .. i wouldn't mind it being like a carriage type of ride that you could not bypass.. you can shoot from your (open air) seat and all is well but if something heavy comes down on you or you don't defend the carriage enough it breaks and crumbles just like the boxes do you and you are stuck walking the rest of the way. Then give you the option to buy the driver a new carriage and/or escort him to the nearest city :)

Wondering if anyone else has gone pretty much all in as an assassin? I took a few photos (have yet to figure out how to upload them to .. wherever... guess i need to go into the xmb for it?) of intimate strike and got a fucking pitch perfect shot of my boy gougeing the hell out of the top of a cyclops head (humming method man the whole time .. "Imma lick outcha braaaiiin") and i wanna show them off. Would also enjoy exchanging some experiences/tactics/weapon + armor loadouts with other assassins.

Guys I'm a Mystic Knight (and I love it, besides not being able to run for long distances without resting)

What are some good core skills and augments to get from other classes?

Also I got some nice armor for my sorc in the catacombs, where else should look to get armor for my sorc?

Damn it, I really like the look of that armor. Not giving in to Capcoms DLC though.

Yeah, I know, but I love it. I realize I'm not exactly "fighting the power" but I wanted my pawn to look all sexy/awesome to impress my friends when they recruit her. She's like my trophy wife. :)

Considering how hyped I was for this game, I'm feeling a little bummed out about it 5 hours or so in as I'm not really enjoying it. I started as a Mage and now I'm at level 10 (I just made it to the Duke's big city after the caravan run), so not very far in.

Does playing a Mage ever get much more interesting? Magic seems a bit unwieldy and weak, and I feel like my Pawns are carrying every battle.

Maybe I should just restart as a Fighter or Strider.

Otherwise, I like the atmosphere of the game. Everything does seem a bit janky, and the visuals can be quite ugly at times, honestly. I really wish there was a PC version.

I think magic is powerful, but it's just not that active... you find your position, and then you spam the hell out of whatever spells you can. Kind of a bore.

That said instead of restarting I'd look into just changing vocations in the city. Mystic Knight or Magic Archer are both good paths apparently.

I would normally say to stick it out and just change your vocation at the inn when you can afford it. Should be relatively soon or even nowish for you. If you must restart your game i would definitely say now is the the point of no return so to speak. Soon you're character will grow on you enough and the job perks and progress you make will be enough that going back to the beginning will really sour the experience for you. This game REALLY opens up alot as you grow. The first portions (almost everything before Grand Soren) is like one really big opening mission.

I may look into that. Does anyone else similarly feel like they have no idea what the fuck is going on or what they should be doing around five hours in? I'm having a hard time getting into a good groove with this game.

I might be switching from a Magick Archer to an Assassin soon. An augment for a 70% damage buff at night? Damn, I need that! Plus I want to try out the Sword and Shield combo.

You just gotta get deeper in. Magic gets really powerful and I find myself killing things before my pawns do. It probably won't get interesting for you since it is a slower type of gameplay.

How is everyone making dual classes? Im a strider level 22 and I cant pick magic or any other class am I missing something??

I haven't even made it to the Capital yet and I have 14 hours logged with an Arisen & Pawn at level 21. I found a dragon north east of the ocean thieves fort and I don't even do damage to it! I was feeling SO confident when I approached it. One fire breath took out my entire team in one hit. Yeah, definitely not ready for that guy! I love how shit doesn't scale in this game. I can't stand the majority of Elder Scrolls/Bethesda games because of scaling. This game does everything right so far! Glad I bought it.

Go to an Inn and talk to the person who runs it and besides spending the night, you get the option to change vocations. You can change vocation of your pawn too.

Does this mean you haven't aquired new skills either? Damn. Be careful, magic archer can't use the regular bow. Make sure you have the cash for weapons required for your new vocation. but at level 22, you should be fine.

Finally made it inside Gran Soren. It's quite daunting at first, I love the size.
Was all set to go there and then i found some sort of sunken dungeon behind a waterfall. Hours later...

Need to find another town besides the starting area and the pawn encampment because my armor blows.

I've never played as a mage yet, so I'm not sure just how involved it gets later on. I can tell you that as a strider-turned-ranger I can carry many fights on my bow skills alone, and it makes me feel very powerful. There's skill involved in aiming your bow at the right part of the monster, using the right skill, knowing when to close in for the kill and knowing when to back off. Hands down, best combat I've ever experienced in an action-RPG, trumping even KoA.

If you're interested in magic, but want to take a more active role in combat, I'd advise becoming a magick archer or a mystic knight.

Gran Soren should get you suited out. You could also try clearing out the Ancient Quarry so the shop opens up there.

114K RC overnight.

My pawn works hard for his money.

Edit: Holy shit, someone gave me a ferrystone. Someone else gave me a tome that casts the earthquake spell.

Getting around in this game is such a chore. I really wish they had a dedicated fast travel system like Skyrim. Often times I'm traveling far distances and I end up getting stranded in the middle of nowhere with low health and items at night. It's horrible.

Btw, how does the leveling of the pawns work when you're in the rift? Since people can only create one pawn, and that pawn levels with them, does that mean that eventually most pawns that you'll find in the rift will be high level? I'd imagine this will be troublesome for new players down the road.

Unless I'm missing something.

This is one of the best things about this game.

My main pawn sucked due to me not upgrading anything or buying anything and not doing most of the early quests.

Not until getting my ass kicked severly and thoroughly was I convinced I had done something wrong and went back to encampment and the first town to find a dozen or so quests I had never touched.

Even with his bum ass he would return with herbs and materials for upgrading weapons.

Might have to do to the fact I made him as big as possible with a Freddy Mercury stache and the highest pitched voice available.

All I ever get are herbs...

My pawn has never been rated, either, despite being used quite often.

The trick is to make your pawn look as cool as possible to make him stand out from the crowd. Mine is always being rated 5's or 4's with positive comments and I almost always get items back.

Is that around in Gran Soren somewheres?

The quarry is right outside Gran Soren, yes.

It might have something to do with my aforementioned internet woes. I basically just get brief periods of connectivity I can use to upload my pawn, but I'm not able to browse other people's pawns. I don't know how this would effect me receiving ratings for my pawn, though she's definitely being used by people quite often.

I accidentally seduced

wtf this bitch is crazy, and so is the duke! You get thrown in jail, and I reloaded to see if it affected much else.

Is there any way to tell how much affinity someone has with you? Keep giving gifts to some NPCs but they just keep saying thanks and nothin else. Trying to get the max affinity chievo.

Funny thing, I walked into dripstone cave for the first time today without equipping a lantern first and I can honestly say after 30 years of gaming this was the first really convincing cave entrance I can think of.

It's not that it was spectacular or anything, it just felt exactly like all the real hidden places I've been while exploring irl.

I'll probably switch to assassin shortly so I can boost my strength. But damn this game is a sleeper

fired zero bullets in the orphanage.
This was the dungeon I talked about earlier when I was splooshing over the lighting (from the Magick Archer skill). Probably the best part of the game so far to me, was that dungeon. Not just the look, but the half flooded aspect of it, and having a distance war with an enemy mage or 2, ending with that giant Cyclops thing. Also, tons of loot.

As a hint, that thing drops a circle orb key, you use that near the beginning, to lower the water level, for the other half of the dungeon.

I actually used the double jump to get across a gap and get behind the door without the key, hahaha.

Two questions?

How do vocations exactly work? I'm level 15 but still a Fighter. If I were to change to a Mystic Knight do I love the augments of upgrades to the skills? If I change to warrior or Range do I loose the ability too use swords? I basically want to be a battlemage, mainly focused on physical attacks that could use an enchanted/magic bow? Can I do this in one class. Basically can someone tell how it works?

Also for weapon enhancements? Are the levels individual? I can upgrade a certain piece of equipment to level 3, before 1 or 2, so would it make those levels pointless or are the improvement cumulative?
