Dragon's Dogma |OT| For the night is dark and full of terrors

What augments and skills does an Assassin get? And what kind of swords and armor can they equip? I'm thinking of switching over from a Magick Archer.

I can't find that third Ogre in the mine. Any idea where it could be?

There should be two of them near the south entrance. One is near a circular area.

Man, I just realized. It's gonna be in the 90's all weekend, and I don't have an air conditioner. Probably not going to be able to play much PS3, for fear of it overheating. Dammit. =/

Apparently to get one Idol you have to
lose to Fournival's daughter when you are escorting her and she tries to race you? I beat that a while ago and i beat her in the race and didnt deliberately lose, does that mean i'll never get the idol from her?

The guide says:
It's based on how well you impress her. So finding her while she tries to ditch you, giving her water when she wants it, and letting her win the race will get you the gold idol

Phew. Just finished a pretty epic play through. I finished up all of the quests that interested me (just some kill x amount of y and some escort quests which I refuse to do left) so I decided to go on an adventure.

I set an X on my map in an unexplored region and set off to get there. With my supplies stocked up and my pawns ready to go I set forth from the capital. I then proceeded to attack some nearby bandits whom I knew would be in my way.

That was when the griffin flew down.

I was now combating about 8 bandits and a really pissed off griffin 2 minutes into my journey.

There were some close calls, but luckily I made it out victorious and even got some items I needed to upgrade my pawn's gear. So, off to a good start. I continue my journey battling bandits, goblins, which lead to a cyclops and a chimera kill in some of the more remote places.

Then night falls.

I'm walking towards a camp fire knowing fair well that A. There's probably some good loot there and B. Most likely there will be something horrible waiting for me. Well, I was right on both accounts. I found a large group of bandits who damn near killed me. It was a close battle, but I was rewarded with some great loot. I proceed a bit further into the darkness and hear a howl...

Time for the direwolves. They came at me in a massive pack, larger than anything I've seen before. There had to be 15 of them at least. They were zipping in and out of my lantern light, and they would surround me any chance they could get. My pawns were going wild, I was trying to fight them off, then some snow harpies flew in to add to the chaos - fire arrows were let loose and finally, after 10+ minutes of constant battling it came to an end.

I took a breather and followed the path to a new area which lead me into a windy canyon. There I faced some undead mages and some skeleton warriors. Right after that battle ended, the sun crested the horizon and I was finally able to get a good view of where I was. Everything was narrow but I had a feeling that I was about to face something huge... and so I was.

Meet my new friend:

dragons_dogma1t3l2r.jpg

This was a fun battle, unique from the others I'd fought so far, and I was REALLY not expecting the attacks he was pulling off. I thought I was safe at a distance... I was wrong.

After defeating him and the local bandits I explored the area a bit more and found a smugler's den which contained some unique weapons and a shield (hammer and a pair of really cool looking daggers to be exact). I exited the area and progressed down the end of the path towards a tower in the distance. Upon arriving at the tower I realized where I was... the Blue Moon Tower.

I recognized this place from what I'd seen pre-release and knew I didn't have the quest for it yet, so I admired it, thanked myself for going out and finding it to make it easier for later... and then transported myself back to the capital with all of my loot.

Was an exciting time overall and is definitely something I'm going to do again. Also, here's a pic showing my current party (different armor on me than what I usually use though):

For those who want a simple way of getting the Gold Idol at Gran Soren (credit goes to ry_mann of GameFAQs):

First, find Fournival. Get the Quest: Land or Opportunity and complete it, it doesn't matter how.

Also, locate and complete the quest "Chasing Shadows." This one can be found from Mason, near the town square in Gran Soren. Mason is the black male that talks with a heavy accent. The quest is straight forward and simple, you should have no trouble with it.

Now, with those two quests completed, find Fournival's house and go inside (between 6AM and 3 PM) and speak with the noble.

Walk through town with Symone. Stay fairly close to her but not too close or too far as she'll get annoyed.

When Symone asks you to find her in one of two locations; behind Arsmith's Alehouse or inside the Gran Soren Inn. Find her quickly for 'bonus points.'

When Symone says she is thirsty head to the apothecary by the fountain square and buy a flask of water (they're cheap) or give her yours.

The third part has two outcomes. It's a race back her house. You will pass the quest regardless of what you choose to do, but if you chose to beat her, you will get a Golden Egg. If you let her win, she will give you a Golden Idol.

That's all there is too it. You can do all three quests without leaving Gran Soren once, so no fighting needed.

It's the armor that's related to one of the quests that takes place in the Catacombs. You can buy the armor from the Black Cat or get it from a chest down there. It's pretty cheap and the armor rating is decent on it.

I usually have all of my other ugly armor on for the stats. I really wish there were more armor sets like the DLC armor. If there are I haven't found any yet. =\

Hopefully it leads up to something more exciting, however all they are is mindless uninspired fetch quests, the only thing it really does is force you to figure out how to traverse certain unreachable areas, for instance I needed either levitation or double jump to reach one place or I cant get to it at all, which is annoying.

Doing the eviction quest, I've chased down the kid...WHERE THE FUCK IS JASPER!?

Yeah. I just downloaded the 100 quest DLC. I won it doing one of the contests on facebook. Kinda sucks to hear they're not very good, but they were free I guess. =/

Holy Balls.

I just got 80,000 rift crystals. Wish there was something I actually wanted to buy. =(

Also I went back to the first town to get a few things.
One of my pawns: "Arisen? Is this your house?"
Then they started smashing stuff.

I couldn't find him anywhere. He's usually always just yelling at the same spot every time. Eventually I just talked to Fournival and he gives you an option to buy the land for 80k. Wasn't hurting for money so I just picked that. Of course after that Jasper is back to where he normally was.

Here is my party :D Archer is the main character, the warrior in white is my pawn, the rest was hired for a little bit. I have better armor for the Pawn but since I bought the DLC , I let her wear it for a few quests ;)

Okay, this might be a dumb question, but how do I see what messages people who have used my pawn have sent me? You know, those little pre-written messages you can send along with an item when you release a pawn?

Just finished escorting the
Ox
(hardly a spoiler...) through the dark of night. I'm only 4-5 hours in, but this game nails so much that I want out of open world RPG's. It's like Capcom scanned my brain and found the perfect formula. Of course it's not perfect, but it nails that sense of danger and excitement I love in an exploration RPG. Good stuff.

EDIT - Gonna pimp my character and my pawn, since I just went through the trouble of transferring these shots with my Vita:

You created Kris Kristofferson?

If I'm not mistaken you get the messages and the reviews only if your character was hired in the rift (riftstone) and not directly from the game world.

Cool, glad to hear it runs fine. Those frame rate drops are expected though.

Yeah, they're not very bright. My pawn went up to a cart full of red barrels and smashed it and blew himself to hell.

On a note about assassin - the sword/shield skills are crappy in my opinion. I've put some points into them, even upgraded several to their higher tier levels and tried them out in actual combat. Felt slow in comparison to daggers and not nearly as effective.

I was just not digging being basically a tank as an assassin. Didn't make much sense to me (swapped out the shield for the bow, but still hated sword skills).

The dagger abilities are hot - like the throat slit one. Really love that maneuver as it's so smooth. Someone attacks, you activate the ability and then your character grabs them, swings around onto their shoulders and then slits their throat. The animation on that is fabulous.

I think I'm going to stick with assassin as I'm not really interested in the other classes. I'll probably change my pawn back from warrior to fighter once he's maxed out warrior as he is more useful to me as a dedicated tank than a DPS'r.

Welp, I picked up a copy after work like I said I would and so far I'm really happy I did. You guys weren't kidding when you said it was addictive. I played for 2.5 hours just now and didn't even realize how much time had passed. What a cool game.

I like it when my pawn tells me not to do anything to arouse the ire of the guards then starts grabbing anything that isn't nailed down. I think the pinnacle of that was when that dialogue popped up while my pawn was fishing around in the Gran Soren fountain for money.

Pawns with no self control are the best pawns.

Very glad I restarted. Having a vague understanding of how the game works from the beginning was a big help. I'm also enjoying the Strider a ton more than the Mage class, which was a lot more supportive in nature and not so active during combat.

I'm up to level 10 now and still mucking about the starting area. Just cleared out that cave under the well, which was a lot of fun.

One thing that really annoys the hell out of me about this game is the lack of auto-saves/checkpointing. I just lost about 20 minutes of progress because I didn't save. It's not hard to save, granted, but I don't like to spam it as if it were a quick save feature in a PC game because it takes something like 20-30 seconds each time I save the game.

I wish they just had a more Demon's Souls/Dark Souls/MMORPG-like way of dealing with death in which you just have some kind of penalty, but don't actually lose any meaningful progress. Considering how suddenly death can come in this game, being left with just the choice to reload your last save is extremely frustrating.

If i forge a portal stone, will i be able to have 3 options as far as places to go? or if i forge it till i had 6 altogether would that give me the option to go to t6 locations?

I just got the portal stone, and saw it could be forged.

So how´s the quality of the quests? Do you have any choices in them, or is just about killing X enemies?
They're surprisingly varied. A few quests I've done so far have simple, binary choices involved, but sometimes your choices aren't explicitly pointed out to you. Most of the time they're linear, though, with clear goals that must be accomplished. I do have to say that typical questing tropes feel very different in this game considering how it's structured.

It's very unassuming about its depth. I repeatedly went into things not expecting much but being pleasantly surprised. There are things in here that are very Demon's Souls/Dark Souls-esque, with some open-ended ways to screw yourself over until NG+. I've had instances of completely unrelated quests also interacting with each other, as well. I know for sure there is at least one set of quests that does this, changing depending on what you've already done in the past.

A forgery won't work. It's used for tricking people(duping quest items so you can keep them) and being a general mean person(dupe that stone, give it to a pawn, knowing that when a person tries to use it, it will fail and they'll be sad).

Made the jump from my fully upgraded Strider to a Ranger and wow. They're similar at first glance, but once you start having fun with it... they're so different! I really love this game.

Holy shit at the escort quest A Parting Tribute.
I figured it'd be an easy thing to just leave from the encampment early in the morning and get the guy there before night fall since it wasn't that far, but nope. I run into a chimera just past the bandits, which mixes in with all kinds of saurians to fight while trying to not die by the chimera. I finally get that bastard down and just a short distance away run into a giant troll.

I figured that has to be it, and night starts coming around, so I'm starting to rush a bit at this point. I wasn't really paying attention and ran right into a drake that took to the air and roasted me.

I reloaded a save just after the troll and was careful to try and avoid the drake, but he still spotted me. I had him on my ass the rest of the way as I was rushing through quickly killing all the goblins in my path to finish the escort.

Such an amazing game. I really hope it does well and we get a DD2 either on 360/PS3 or on next gen consoles, so we won't have to worry about the technical issues.

Coming up next on Fox & Friends: is Japanese video game company Capcom teaching our kids to fuck cows? A fair and balanced debate after this.

Do you want to know what the first thing I did as soon as I had free reign in the first town?

Yeah, climbed cattle.

Is the main character of the story (and the one you're always in control of) customizable? And if you can send this main character off to help others, are you still able to use him?

Fought my first Armored Cyclops on the way to my quest

Epic!

Then bested him and it was already night ...but then I still completed my quest when the folks I needed come out at night anyway

Basically, the quest played completely different then I would have expected it

Went to jail for accidently attacking a villager in Gran Soren. Had to pay 5k bribe.

Same. I found a skeleton key when I got back out though.

Also, I was just going through the
Water God Altar
and I was try'n to escort Mercedes with me. She fell in the water and it said "mission failed". Is she dead and gone forever? Or will her quest be posted back on the board? =(
