Drifting away from Playstation

You're a sexy mofo, just sayin'. : )

I will say that my frustration this gen is with their handling of their first party studios and all their legacy IPs. Wtf are they doing? At this point all developement should be headed towards PS6, buuuut..

Their reliance on 3rd party titles amd lack of game diversity & selection from their amaxing studios is mind boggling....
Corn my bud, hope all is good with you! Really miss the good old days, and I think nostalgia is also part of the reason I feel this gen sucks, 😭

I have been a big PS fan, played most of my games on the platform. I loved the ecosystem, the variety and quality of their games.

sxie0212.png

But as of recently, I turn on the console less. Feels like the PS magic is fading away. This is no melodramatic reaction, but a gradually waning interest. Over time, mainly since 2022, I found that:

  • The PS Plus service offers far less value than before, or compared to competitors.
For an annual price of $135, the PS Plus Extra offers a far lesser catalog than the competitors. Each month 10+ games leave, but new arrivals never make up for the quality. Just look at the last three months. For the first time in 10 years, I stopped renewing my sub in March.

And then hardware. I never mind spending big, as long as the products offer good value. Based on the info out there so far, I don't think PS5 Pro is the case. I was dead firm to get it on day one, but now, I am holding off to see more about how much the PSSR can actually do.

  • The customer service is a nightmare to deal with.
It's genuinely mindboggling that a giant like Sony on the market, has this unfathomable abysmal customer service. For once I lost a digital game's license for no reason, I contacted them, I provided the receipt directly from PSN store, and after one hour of back and forth, all they could advise, was to ask me to factor reset my console. It's been 9 months, I never heard back. And of course there was a time when I needed to claim the warranty for a drifting stick DualSense. There never was an easy path to navigate on the website for the purpose, and I had to call the hardware service number right at 8 am, because any other time, you stayed in the waiting line forever. And at least I was lucky to get the warranty honored. There are folks never able to.

  • The states of current first-party studios are unclear, and I don't know what to anticipate.
And this is probably the final straw. after all, we love a console because of the games on it. Honestly, I had a great time with PS5, 2020 - 2022. The DualSense is magical, the graphics in Demons' Souls, Rift Apart, and Forbidden West are all breathtaking.
The downtime started in 2023, the mediocre showcase followed by debacles of their service game strategy. So far, we don't know a single project from any of PS's prestige studios (other than more Marvel from Insomniac). I am confident when the games from ND, SP, Bluepoint et al. come out, they will be great, but how long will it take? We used to have 2 - 3 high quality first party games every year.

I feel like I didn't want to go anywhere, but still drifting away from the console in the meantime. All I hope is that the Japanese take back all leadership of Playstation, and steer the brand towards what used to make it special.

I feel you.
The state of PlayStation is sad.
This is also coming from a fan.

Not to ride on the hate bandwagon but I agree with the OP's points and have been feeling the same for some time.

I will argue by far the worst thing has been their messaging regarding first party. I hate the new silent, don't tell us shit about upcoming projects, marketing approach. HATE IT! I actually think a large part of their success as a platform has been getting people excited for the future. I believe this new approach to marketing their games will end up having a significantly negative impact on their branding over time (too early to tell). It's hard to articulate why, but with no clear path laid out for software it's hard to be excited for their platform. And yes I know this is illogical, and that on paper they provide plenty of high quality exclusives and exclusive 3rd party, and I should look at games news less and go play some of my backlog.

With regard to the most recent PS5 Pro pricing; it just feels like now they want to shift toward being a premium brand like Apple, and the days of mass market PlayStation gaming for everyone is quickly becoming a thing of the past. That sucks for a lot of people who simply won't be able to afford a PlayStation anymore. In the past we saw prices go down and people jumped in. Rather than make them more affordable they leave the base model at a high price and want to charge even more for a premium product. Feels like the type of decision made by short sighted bean counters and I think it will backfire on them and end up having a similar effect in reducing the power and reach of their brand (still too early to tell). They may want to be apple, but they are not Apple, and people do not need a PlayStation the same way they need a phone. Simple math is the more expensive they go the smaller their market will become, (yes even with the current state of X-box).

Also; I know the PSVR is more of a niche device, but they have kind of done us early adopters dirty on this one too. Where are the dammed first party games! It's the first PlayStation product I actually regret buying and I've owned every one of their machines since they got started. Huge waste of money and really a bummer as a VR fan.

At this point I will continue to shift toward steam and high end PC gaming until they show me a reason to be excited for their platform. I imagine I'll keep my PS5, but honestly I have considered just grabbing all my PS5 games on steam and ditching it. They'll play better on my 4090 anyway, and if there are no true exclusives who needs it. Maybe Nintendo becomes the second machine in the house?

Glad I don’t put a value on a console based its 1st party output. 3rd party games have always had the bulk of my game time. On every PlayStation console I’ve own since the PS1. Even during NES and SNES days, most of my favorite games were 3rd party. Early Sega Genesis games were an exception due to Nintendo’s stranglehold on 3rd parties back then.

Nintendo can't do that either, I honestly don't get why everyone is always oblivious to the fact that 75% of Nintendo's output is external development, something that Sony does as well, but people are always ready with the "second-party" goalposts in that case.
for comparison's sake, here's nintendo versus sony in terms of internal output for the last 7 years:
nintendo:
2017:
The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild
1-2-Switch
Arms
Splatoon 2
Super Mario Odyssey
Xenoblade Chronicles 2
2018:
Xenoblade Chronicles 2: Torna – The Golden Country
Super Mario Party
2019:
Super Mario Maker 2
Ring Fit Adventure
2020:
Animal Crossing: New Horizons
Clubhouse Games: 51 Worldwide Classics
2021:
Game Builder Garage
Mario Party Superstars
2022:
Nintendo Switch Sport
Mario Strikers: Battle League
Xenoblade Chronicles 3
Splatoon 3
2023:
Metroid Prime Remastered
The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom
Everybody 1-2-Switch!
Super Mario Bros. Wonder
2024:
Mario vs. Donkey Kong
sony:
2017:
Gravity Rush 2
Horizon Zero Dawn
MLB The Show 17
Uncharted: The Lost Legacy
Knack II
Gran Turismo Sport
SingStar Celebration
2018:
Shadow of the Colossus
MLB The Show 18
God of War
Astro Bot Rescue Mission
2019:
MLB The Show 19
Days Gone
Blood & Truth
Concrete Genie
2020:
Dreams
MLB The Show 20
The Last of Us Part II
Ghost of Tsushima
Astro's Playroom
Demon's Souls
Marvel's Spider-Man: Miles Morales
2021:
MLB The Show 21
Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart
2022:
Horizon Forbidden West
Gran Turismo 7
MLB The Show 22
The Last of Us Part I
God of War Ragnarök
2023:
Horizon Call of the Mountain
MLB The Show 23
Marvel's Spider-Man 2
2024:
MLB The Show 24
Concord
Astro Bot
I didn't want to include the MLB games since I thought they were a little too much, but I figured that the workforce on those projects was large enough for them to be relevant in this discussion.

I slowly walked away when they started doing PC ports, same as with Xbox.

But Astro Bot has pulled me back in, at least for now. Glad I didn’t wait for a port there!

Away from Playstation or Gaming in general ?

It's just a slump which happens in every Gen.
Atleast we know why it has happened this time and why it will last the longest
Just PlayStation. Gaming is still alright. Having a blast with Wukong and replaying some old games via emulator atm

Recently got rid of my PS5 and I'm without a PlayStation console for the first time ever. Had barely used it since launch.

I've always had every console + a good gaming PC. There used to be way more reason to own a console but that's not the case anymore. Now I have a PC, Switch and Steam Deck, as far as curent-gen goes.

Microsoft started launching their games on PC, so I got rid of my XSX pretty early on. There wasn't really any reason to get one to begin with but new hardware is exciting.

Sony's first party games have mostly become uninteresting to me and now they're eventually coming to PC regardless.

The performance gap between console and PC has become so large that I'd rather wait for PC ports of even my most anticipated games, for example FFVII Rebirth.

As long as Nintendo has its exclusives, I'll have their latest console even though their hardware is usually disappointing.

I get it. I have premier platinum status on United. I "should" fly United every single time since all my miles are there and I risk losing the status if I don't fly with them enough, but I don't. It's the reality of life.
I get what you're trying to say, but saved flight mileage is still not how an ecosystem (full of purchased products) works. If it helps as a comparison, think of apple music purchases, book purchases on Kindle, or even movie purchases on Vudu. Taking OP out of this example for a minute, in general it is extremely hard to just rip someone out of these systems once they start building a library of purchases on them.

Regarding your other point you're right, there isn't much else to say as that's on the OP. Personally I think he is experiencing gaming fatigue and is choosing to blame it on his Playstation, but that's just me making a theory based on how many of these types of 'I'm not enjoying ____' threads that I see pop up every so often on this forum.

100% agree about PSVR. All that talk about how more games would be like GT7 as far as the experience. Being able to play in VR or not, games be suited for that type of experience. Not only has there been very little of that, but they haven't even brought the PSVR1 games over that should have been. Wipeout, Blood and Truth....and now they are going over to PC with that as well.

What's the point of the damn Playstation anymore? Outside of GT I really haven't even bothered to play mine. I can get most of not all games on PC cheaper and its more than capable of playing on ultra or very high..

I've been there with playstation since PS1, but I think I'm done after this. There just isn't a valid reason anymore. PS Plus feels like a ripoff now(for me). I've let it go and haven't missed anything it offered. Most games I already had either on the system or PC. It's made more sense for me to have GamePass for Day One games and games I might be curious about that I haven't played. Plus hasn't really come through with that.

EDMIX

Writes a lot, says very little
Some of you are too dramatic lol Sounds like a damn CW drama

This whole rollercoaster some of you are on (especially the bandwagon jumping with AstroBot) , look you'll be back when they announce some other game like "wow, Sony finally listening to players"

As if the fucking company wasn't just developing those games for years or some shit, even some here who seem to think Astrobot is some fucking reaction to something, its a game thats been in development for years, from what I see, the only difference with this gen, is Sony is NO LONGER announcing games YEARS in advance, it does nothing for the teams, they no longer have to keep making multiple builds, have consumers nit picking over alpha design changes etc

Which means to a lot of you with TikTok attention spans seem to be under the impression nothing is happening cause they didn't tell you several years in advance about games being made, so you then assume Astrobot was some game made in a few days following Concord lol

So I don't see this need to know what they are doing years and years in advance. I don't even see that matters to most consumers, looking at Fallout 4's success, they give a shit about knowing what they can play this year, within 6 months etc.

So even if Sony wanted to tell everyone, every last game in development, ya'll would just cry about that shit,

Sony like "OK so Horizon MMO happening, Spiderman MP too, GT Mortorcycle sequel, Motorstorm remake, I'll keep you posted"

giphy.webp

GAF - "DERR OMG wHaT's hApPeNiNG wItz sOrNy" lol

When this shit happens with other publishers, you don't know much about it, cause a lot of them don't just tell you years in advance about every last thing, they'll let you know when its actually REALLY A THING.

So I just don't care, talk to me when that shit is near release lol I buy games, I don't buy trailers, fuck am I going to do with this information? Be like "oh thank god games be made by people dat make da games, I can rest easy" lol

Some of you care more about the perception of this or how it looks vs reality. I care more that they allow those teams to make solid products, not reacting to every last thing with a rushed reveal, they have solid teams, they make solid games and I'm fine with them taking their time with that.

Yeah I don't get why the stopped this approach either. Building up anticipation for a title and getting hype is part of the fun!

They had a solid logical reason to stop that.

I don't think it was fun for those developers to keep making new builds for previews and demos instead of actually just making the game in peace. So I'm fine with a 1 year to 6 month window or something. The team works in peace, we get footage closer to what the final game will look like and you'll get it when you get it.

I'm more ok with Sony no longer sharing that information so far out with people speculating to death to the point of making up entire theories and exaggerate the expectation of what the actual product is.

So I feel, maybe its best to say nothing, until its actually something near release with a logical release window.

I think most people don't care if the game is developed by the main studio or a subsidiary studio... At the end of the day, they're all part of the Nintendo company.

Its a phase, happened to me before! Drifted to Nintendo and was too kiddy for my taste, Drifted to MS and was lacking on so many good games, tried PC but wasn't as seamless as consoles

Ended up back to the one that covers all my needs .. Sony Playstation 🤣🔥

When I upgraded my PC last time, it ran GTA IV so much better than PS4, I sold my PS4.

There really wasnt any reason to keep the PS4 when my PC

But I have been gaming on all sorts of consoles since my younger years. Had a NES, Megadrive, Dreamcast, PSX, N64, Xbox, Xbox 360, PS3, Gamecube etc.. Mostly all big consoles. But I never cared about specific brands.
I cared about playing good games, not which plastic box I played it on.

So these days my PC is again much upgraded (3070 and Ryzen 5700x), and I honestly don't see the need for a console.

The only reason I will buy a console next year is for GTA 6.

Moonjt9

No Silksong? = Delivering the pain.
I’ve definitely drifted off their popular first party games lately. Ragnarok was the one that made me just quit playing them. It was insufferable. I tried to play Miles Morales but again it’s all the same. I played all of these exact same games before. They desperately need to shake up their “formula” or better yet, stop making such formulaic games.

I thought I was qualified to talk with 50+ plats, 500+ is nuts man!

It’s not the same company that released a string of hits on the PS3. It is the move from Japan, it’s now just ran as a typical American corporation.

We’re not getting it back man, I’ve turned elsewhere (Deck Oled and Switch Oled) and I’m having a great time. The sooner you acknowledge the death the sooner you can move on, it was probably easier for me as I liked the 360 as well and have had to deal with the death of Xbox too.

Nintendo fans from the NES say Hi. It goes. On top of the world to loser nerd.

Yeah the switch is kicking ass. But there is no guarantee the follow up machine will do as well.

Good for you, OP. Now start giving the middle finger to these vampire corporations and build a Linux gaming PC. All of a sudden, you're the boss. You own your games, your operating system and your privacy. And it's even cheaper in the long run.

Well said. This is exactly my thoughts- give it back to Japan to take over. That was the Sony Playstation I loved. Today, it's a hollow version of that.
People should really let this narrative go.

Japan made PlayStation great when most of the best games came from Japan.
But you have to face reality and admit that since PS3, PlayStation, consoles, and gaming in general, have been carried by western games. Naughty Dog kept PS in the race. Guerrilla kept PS3 in the race. Had Japanese games stayed the focus of PlayStation, it’d become WeebStation and fall from grace faster than you can imagine, especially at its price. Just look at what the various publishers consider satisfying sales for their games and you’ll see that sales that make one publisher of Japanese-first games very satisfied, make the stocks of another publisher go into free fall.

So many years ago, many people here were sure that Final Fantasy coming to Xbox was the writing on the wall for PlayStation. Guess what? It was far, far from it. Now FF has been struggling to restore its identity for a long time, becoming an IP like so many others. FF doesn’t sell systems anymore. Meanwhile, the system that sealed its success thanks to FF exclusivity is still at the top of its game, in spite of some missteps.

The gaming market, excluding mobile, is in the west. It’s being made in the west. If you ask me, I’m in your team. I often enjoy Asian games more than a lot of western releases. But you’d be a fool to think that this boat can stay afloat if it’s steered and commandeered by Japan. Nintendo stopped competing on the same level almost 20 years ago, and they understand very well that to get big, you have to have solid foundations in America and cater to the west’s tastes.

I say this as someone who’s skipped Sony for two generations in a row, mind.

I have always loved playstation as a brand, but earlier this year i built a pretty good gaming pc and noticed I stoped playing on my ps5. The only thing that bothers me is that I need to wait 1 year before they release games on steam. But it is what it is..
