Driveclub PS Plus Edition Delayed by Server Issues

Huge difference being is that he probably paid full price for forza. How are you even comparing the two? I understand the frustration but some of the complaints in this thread are hilarious.
 
I can understand them holding the game back to not kill their servers even more (although it sucks that they're having these issues at all), but I can't help but feel that leaving the paid version and the paid PS+ upgrade up is a bit disingenuous. To all the people who don't follow this stuff as closely as we do this looks as though the two paid options are the only options. They're not told that there is supposed to be a "free" PS+ version, and they're not prevented from buying one of the paid versions because of the server issues. There's no indication anywhere on the Store that anything out of the ordinary is going on or that a certain version is missing. All the PS Store versions should be held back until this is sorted. Or all of them should be up, with the online functionality temporarily disabled. What they're doing now is a bit BS.
 
I have the retail version and still can't get on the servers to play online. I'm really getting tired of console games being released unfinished or not properly prepared for online gaming. Good job Sony! Bunch of incompetent morons. The game was delayed for one year to fix this sort of thing and they launch it with server issues still broken? WTF is up with that? What a disappointment.

I had the game preoreded for 60€ for quite some time on Amazon. Then they announced the 39,99€ upgrade and I cancelled my preorder. I wanted to download the PS+ version, play some rounds and then upgrade. It was actually only a failsafe if the game sucked total balls.

But yeah, I caved.

All versions of the game should be available or none of them should. If they're really having such massive server issues that they can't allow more players access because it would negatively impact the experience of those who have already purchased the game, they shouldn't continue selling the game either.
 
Do we have any day one sales numbers?

I can't imagine this game selling gang busters, especially to the point of killing servers

Most of the people paying for the game had it preordered or bought right when it came out. The full version had already been posted to the store.

The few people that might pick it up now pales in comparison to the flood of traffic that will happen when the PS+ edition hits.

Considering how difficult it seems for Sony to make any changes at all to the store, it's probably not worth their time to pull the paid ones, especially if they expect to have this resolved in the next day or so.
 
I guess Sony Servers = Digital Bouncers for this supposed DriveCLub :(

pathetic show from Sony people pay 50 a year now so there is no excuse for failings like this. Glad I let my PS+ run out 4 months ago, never again
 
I am still really shocked that they still can't get the servers working. I bought the retail copy of the game, but only played a little because I feel like I am only getting half a game with missing the social features etc... Hope they get their shit together.

My thoughts exactly. It's clear that the PS+ version is a separate download from the full retail version. Couldn't they just let it download and disable connectivity for maybe a week? Instead, there is NO indication that it's even a thing.
 
Thinking about it, I have no idea how feasible my idea would be but if I would be in charge I would put the PS+ edition up and turn the Driveclub servers physically off so they can't be "DDOSed" for the time being. Then I would develop a small patch that patches the game to start in offline mode only and then do a regionally stacked launch for another patch that gradually enables online again, that way PS+ people could atleast play offline till they fix the mess :/
 
I've requested an ETA, although no guarantee the folks I work with can give me an answer back.

I believe the exact words in my email were "forums meltdown over the delay" or something like that.
 
So if the PS+ version was supposed to be out yesterday, the day it was released at retail, how would they know the servers were that bad already that they needed to pull it from the update? A few hours into the day they were just like, "like we totally can't release the PS+ version today."

I dunno, just seems like bullshit to me.

I don't think we ever get sales numbers digitally, which is what the majority will be for Driveclub. Don't expect to hear much

You're underestimating the amount of work that would be required to create an offline mode. The social connectivity is fully integrated into every single feature of the game, including tour mode. An "offline" mode would require them to rework every aspect of the game and remove the constant connection attempts to pull data and challenges from other players. It would likely take months.

Can you really not see how this situation might cause less knowledgeable people to pay for the game when they might actually have gone for the "free" version instead had they known it existed? Even if that's not Sony's intention with this, it might very well be the result in many cases. And I don't think Sony is stupid enough to not realize that. Therefore, it's a bit disingenuous IMO.

Never thought of that....hmmm, re-reading your post, you may be onto something here. How can they claim the PS+ version is being held off due to server load, but yet the PS+ version was never available, even at midnight when the game launched? How would they know that the servers would be hit that hard and yet never make it available?

I think you nailed it man. Your analogy is spot on and really creates questions as to what the real reason why they are holding off the PS+ version.

This sounds so much like Microsoft's PR speak when Xbone was going to require a constant online connection.

If I can pull my Ethernet cable out, and still play a game, it has an offline mode.
 
After the missed launch, the broken promise of the full game (yes, that’s the way this was announced a year ago), the following broken promise of the majority of the full game (we now only get 1/5), they can’t even get it to launch a year later for Plussers...

Appreciate the communication. I don't envy anyone on the Sony end of this, all consumer-side annoyances aside.

It doesn't say about the free version on the store, but those of us that expected a free version and know one is coming are not going to click buy on a 50$ game if we are waiting for the free version. I know the difference between 50$ and free, I hope others do as well. They have said something on their facebook page though about it at least.

It would be nice if there was a way for them to give us the free version and just disable online, I agree. But in the words of Major Nelson, "it's not like they can just flip a switch" (as far as I know i'm sure there is a lot more to it since it is so integrated as a mixed online/offline game).

There are still a lot of disc copies out there for people to buy as well. If they pulled the digital version they are just 'forcing' in some way people to get the physical copy that want it. If you just want the free version, wait for it. The game didn't completely stop functioning because the online stuff isn't available. I mean it sucks that it's not there but there is still stuff you can play offline and they are probably not planning on that big of a downtime (I hope not).


However, not defending their lack of preparedness on the server front.

Because the Playstation Store update is always late afternoon. It takes them forever to get anything updated. The physical copy would have been released in stores at midnight last night or early in the morning. If they were already having server issues I would think they had time to take the plus edition out of the rotation.

This would be an accurate description. I'm personally pretty sad it's so late, because I bought a retail version of the game and it's shipping was delayed. I thought the consolation would be that I could at least play the Playstation Plus version while I waited, but no dice.

Is this an online-only game? Pretty sure it's not. So it in fact already has an offline mode.

Oh you are absolutely right I don't doubt a full offline rework would take quite a bit of time but I wasn't thinking of anything near as elaborate, let me explain. I was merely trying to suggest patching the game so instead of the Driveclub servers it would connect to 127.0.0.1 or any other bogus IP just to relieve the servers for the moment. Now I don't know much about the way the game is coded so I just assume here that changing the connection address would be simple.

I agree that would be ideal, but from what I've played of the game it would probably require a client side update, which could possibly take longer to send out than whatever server side patch they are working on right now (assuming it's a server side issue which it sounds like it is).

If the servers are down because of the problem and people are playing offline anyway, why would that be such a problem?

The servers went to shit with the midnight unlock for the digital preload version.

I'm not defending what happened, but it's easy to rationalize the timeline here.

Or... just shut the servers off until this is sorted? That should force everyone's game into offline mode, and it should be fine as the game is made to work that way as well (even if it's not how it's meant to be played). A server that can't be reached can't be bogged down by requests.

They can't actually because even though you are playing in single player, if you are connected to PSN it will keep trying to connect to the servers. Hence why after every race the game freezes for 1 or 2 secs because it's trying to sync with the servers.

And according to their twitter, the reason why the servers are to capacity is because of the amount of challenges and face-offs and other social features of Driveclub.

No worries, I do my best to keep them updated on the forum side of what folks are saying. To be honest I want an ETA too.

With that said I get that things may be complicated as they work out whatever is causing the delay.
