I saw this game set up in a Sony store I randomly walked into today, so I given that I apparently won't play the PS+ version until next year at this rate, I decided to make that my "first impressions demo" instead.
I don't actually know what kind of expectations I had going in, but I was underwhelmed. The IQ wasn't as good as I thought it was going to be (way more jaggies than I was hoping for, relatively low LOD in the distance, and I think I may have spotted no AF but I'm not sure), and it may be because I just finished playing through DiRT 3 on PC at a buttery smooth 60 FPS and completely jaggy free, but Driveclub felt extremely sluggish. It probably has something to do with the cars driving at very high speeds that made the low framerate all the more noticeable for me. Driving felt OK. Not great, just OK. The "feel" of the game really felt wrong to me on a first impression, the combination of kinda-drifty arcade physics and the 30 FPS on really high speeds really made everything feel sluggish.
I could probably enjoy it a bit if I really sat down and sank my teeth into it, but after playing that race I can safely say I can definitely live without it. I put the controller down immediately knowing I can wait several more months for the PS+ version if need be. I have no interest in buying the game soon, I'll probably wait for a price drop down the line but realistically, it looks like the PS+ version will be enough Driveclub for me. The experience really didn't feel like something I wanted to pay a premium on.
