DS VS PSP

Blackace

if you see me in a fight with a bear, don't help me fool, help the bear!
Ok after seeing 32978158548792698 different threads about how the PSP should teach Nintendo to make better hardware, or how the DS's games will change how people play games forever and so on... so if you have anything like that to say...say it here... new threads will be locked down... and repeat offenders will have a short timeout from the forums...

Thank you!

I'll start! The DS rocks!

Scintillating debate.
So far we're off to a great start.

Too bad it can only go downhill from here. :(

been going down hill since Sony and Nintendo released these two great handhelds! :lol

Just got my PSP this morning. REallly an awesome piece of hardware, kudos to Sony.

Its only a matter of time until they capture the handheld market. The machine is just too sexy to pass up

I have been pretty underwhelmed with both so far... Neither has a killer app yet. The best portable game so far this year has been Zelda: The Minish Cap.

Have not seen a DS or PSP in real life, all i have seen/heard is from the internet. The PSP is still months away from release here (Europe).

I only own a PS2 no other console/handheld. But if i had the choice to get one of the handhelds @ first i would go for the PSP, simply because it has more graphical power. But on the other hand there are some downsides for the PSP. Like the possibility for dead pixels (still no word from Sony untill they have enough units in storage) and the battery life. Personally the battery life is not an issue for me since i always indoors when playing (I work, dont study anymore so i only use it @home or @ friends places)

But the potiential of the touch screen of the DS cant be forgotten. And until the PSP will finally be released here i still get the chance of looking at the Pros/Cons of both devices.

I see no good coming from this thread...

I sold my DS to pay for my PSP I have no regrets!

just trying to stop people from trolling threads about PSP/DS games, or starting more threads about how this handheld is better than that handheld... if I can do that without banning too many folks then this thread will be more successful than the PSP launch

:lol :lol :lol This is GAF... i honestly don't see trolling stopping anytime soon, goodluck in controlling this thread :D

DS:
Pros - Nintendo games, a lot of games in the works, touch screen can offer innovation when used correctly, plays your old GBA games and actually improves the picture quality, pictochat
Cons - N64 graphics, a lot of shallow, gimmicky games, and(Thus far) Very few quality games, bulky compared to the PSP and especially the GBA SP

PSP :
Pros - Good launch titles, almost console-quality graphics, lots of games in the works, plays movies and music, can view images, might be great for emulation purposes
Cons - very fragile, many of the games(Or the style of game) can be found easily on modern consoles, expensive hardware, expensive software, less bulky than the DS but still too bulky

GBA SP:
Pros - A library of over 1000 games to choose from, Many of the finest games ever created were ported to it, lots of 2D games, Cheap hardware, cheap software, Fits snugly in your back pocket like a wallet(now that's portable!)
Cons - Doesn't offer advanced 3D graphics like the Big Boys do(boo hoo, boo hoo...), a lot of shovelware in its game library

Aside from all of the other stuff...if and when the PSP gets cracked (for emulation and homebrew), the PSP will win for many, many people. As far as mainstream appeal, DS has Nintendo's first party software and the more important advantage in the portable gaming space of price, in both the hardware and software. Mainstream gamers really don't give a shit about innovation in control, IMO. They want software and functionality...so that's gonna be interesting to see what happens, in terms of sales.

I'm getting a PSP when the first hardware revision (and price drop) hits...and I really don't even care for handheld gaming all that much. DS is good for improved GBA play right now.

Anyway, the thing is, to me...the main competition for PSP will be the successor to the GBA. DS, at that point, will fall off of Nintendo's priorities in software, IMO.

I've played both and own the PSP. The DS just doesn't do it for me. Very aveerage looking screens, the duel screen thing seems kinda gimmicky to me. Feels odd, to me, playing a game with the stylus and the d-pad at the same time. I personally don't see the "innovation" of the thing.

On the other hand, the PSP has been a great purchase. Very impressive screen and graphics. Nice sound, especially with headphones, and a much better library of games, even though it's only been out a week. I can't keep my hands off my PSP, playing it at the office, on the couch at home, and anywhere else I can find the time. MP3 and movie playback are not important to me, I have other devices to do that, but for game play, it's excellent.

Sounds to me like the SP wins. :D

DS plays GBA games. DS hardware has more to offer the gameplay.

PSP plays $20 barebone movies, only lasts 6 hours, and just rehashes PS2 games at $50 a pop

DS for the win!

P.S. I would actually entirely regret my PSP purchase if not for Lumines. If Lumines comes out for DS (or Meteos is better) say goodbye to the Piece of Shit Player.

now these are the type of posts we need... come on PSP posse get on it

This is funny having a mod create a sticky thread in an attempt to troll PSP users under a PSP vs DS banner. As evidence by his concurrent posting in this thread! Blackace you gotta a ton of work to do if you want to match Drinky. Good luck, though!

Just trying to keep it fom flooding the forum more than it already has... I don't get people as excited as well as my counterpart, Drinky, does. :lol

you can't do any good trolling in a thread devoted to trolling. this thread is destined to suck nearly as much as the ds. but it's ok, blackace. if i was a ninthing pigmen with moderation privileges, i'd try to stifle psp vs. ds discussion too. :(

Now this isn't a troll Blackace thread.. so watch out you might get your ghetto pass revoked...

I can't say as I can flame any of these handhelds.

But I can sure as hell flame the Tiger Electronics-produced handheld, Game.Com. PEEEEEYOUUUUU. Was that thing ever a clunker! It was so bulky and useless, you couldn't even wipe your ass correctly with it.

I like touching, I really do.

PSP screen is sexy...but so damn expensive. Games are lackluster so far.

NDS can tide me over until more games come out. The next Fire Emblem will last me a while.

no neutrality here.. pick a side or GET OUT!

:D

I don't know why anyone who already owns a GBA would get a DS. I don't know why anybody who wants a GBA doens't already own one.

PSP is damn cool.

Easy choice.

...and, as an adult person, I can keep my toys clean and not break them, you fragile-fingerprinting whiners!

I don't think anyone can rile up people as well as Drinky! :lol

But now that I'm posting again I must make some contributions!

I choose the SP!!!

Oh, I have to choose between the DS and the PSP? That's like choosing between two ugly step-sisters. Well...I'll go with the DS! Because it plays GBA games and won't break out of the box.

I would say wait until the games you want on either device appears, then get the system. IF you really have a lot of money, get both (when the games are out you want) and you will be genuinely happy. Also with the PSP pick up a gig duo and you will be pleasently suprised. If you don't have an SP or GBA, definetly pick up a DS, for the GBA library is expansive, and the games look better on the DS.

right on brother.. the DS won't knock up your sister and then leave her either... f'ing PSP...

I choose PSP. Not because of what it does, or the games on it, but more for what it means for the future of handheld machines and making Nintendo wake up (hopefully)

PSP for me by far. Graphics and fun gameplay while DS right now (here in the US, not necessarily the case in Japan) has neither. The DS upcoming software list looks pretty good but so does the PSP. The PSP can play music, videos, and pictures. DS will do neither unless some special accessory comes out for it. So to me, the choice is clear: PSP.

if that's the future of 2d content, then i'd rather see 2d euthanized than slip into such indignity.

the ps2 has actually built up a fairly strong 2d library through sheer market dominance and breadth of support. as the ps1 did before it. and as the psp hopefully will in the future.
