It's an okay time waster.. and it's far from the worst thing Yuzo's touched. :P

There's better GBA ARPGs out there for sure, but CBJ was pretty unique. It's better than CIMA at least.

Dude, I will defend CIMA to the death! One of the most underrated games I've ever played... (even though it has quite a few quirks/annoyances)

They're all rumors right now. The only portable Naka's specifically mentioned that he's interested in bringing PSO too is the PSP though.
Specifically he said he'd potentially be interested if Sony got a stable network going, but it was clear he has no intention of doing so now. The PSO DS thing was part of a larger rumor that Puyo Puyo Fever DS and it were headed to DS. And it half came true already. Given Nintendo's new network focus, I wouldn't be surprised to see it happen in some form.

Nagoshi's confirmed he's doing something for DS too but we don't know what yet. Monkey Ball would be the natural assumption, but it could be something else under his team's care. Maybe a Shining game even.

I don't remember where the Soul Calibur DS rumor started but it been all over the place now.

First off, this thread is freaking great.

But I just spent $200 on a 15 GB iPod and a car kit from a friend a few weeks back. I have no money, but I wasn't really planning on buying a PSP right away. Now my friend tells me today he saw PSP's (not the pack) for 150 bucks in a store in a nearby mall yesterday. I think he must have seen something wrong. There's no way. Fuck, I'm broke nigga I'm broke. I'm afraid to drive there to check and they're actually $150. No. Can't be. NOOOO.

Dang. Should have been completely sold out there at that price

Where? I'll buy a second one for network gaming at that price!

I'm most likely going to hold off on both systems. The Ds... has very few games that interest me (Jump SuperStars... Mario Kart?) and grab me strongly thus far. I need a solid game that does not rely on... minigames *vomit*.

The PSP has a lot of console-type games. That's OK, but they made it a bit *too* much like the PS2's initial days, and no real killer app, like the DS. I'll give the PSP some credit, though, because it does have some games I'm fiending to get a chance with, namely Lumines, Ridge Racer, Tony Hawk and DarkStalkers...

What tilts me in the favor of the PSP is the incredible value it is. Yeah, it may be $250, but it's MP3, web browsing, JPG, and MP4 playback would easily exceed the price of a PSP and a 1gig memstick if bought in different products. Lets be real.

Now, although it's hard to resist now, what may really push me over the edge for the PSP (or DS) is the homebrew scene. Portable CPS1/2/NeoGeo is my dream.

And damnit, we need Devil Dice (with an expanded puzzle mode) for PSP!
Agreed. Xai WS had me contemplating importing a WSC just for it.

IQ PSP would be excellent too!

I thought about getting a Wonderswan for Xi as well.

I was never into Intelligent Qube though.

Q: Does Puyo Pop Fever have a straight, classic mode? Or does it have "enhancements" that change the gameplay?

I *think* Fever mode can turned off in the options for all versions.

Been playing the U.S. Pac-Pix for the past couple days.

Not sure how I feel about it yet. It swings from refreshing and revelating, to disgust and boredom. I'll give it a couple more days.

Princess Crown on PSP... (==3

I want to see some hot 2D shit on DS. Jarrod, what are some hot 2D games on DS? With sprite filled shitstorms a la Guardian Heroes Advance (that doesn't count. it's a GBA game) or huge detailed sprites like Princess Crown?

Out of the stuff out right now, I'd say most of it looks GBA caliber (Kirby, Yoshi, Harvest Moon, Egg Monster Hero, Puyo Fever, etc). There's upcoming games like Castlevania though and really, Princess Crown could be run on DS flawlessly too (with resolution adjustments) if Atlus ported it.

I love AGH, but now I kinda wish Treasure had waited a little bit for a DS release instead. That engine almost breaks the GBA. :/

Wait for Gunstar Heroes then. :)

And yeah, Princess C. could be ported to DS, but that doesn't negate the fact that it's not coming out for DS. Just sucks... if the DS wants to be a 2D machine (like most of these touch games I've been playing are ALL 2D), why doesn't it have better looking 2D games?

I hope Jump Superstars isn't shit. (or touch for that matter)

I'm still not 100% convinced it's DS but it does seem to be the most likely home. Either GBA or PSP are still plausable too though imo.

Well, I think a lot of it is just waiting to have some of these games revealed. It wouldn't surprise me if Viewtiful Joe DS was sprite based, or maybe sprites on ploygon bgs like Strider 2. Slime Morimori 2 looks like it has real potential too, and no doubt Four Swords DS will look great being based off the GC build.

The problem right now is that a lot of these early games were likely converted GBA/mobile projects. Similarly, it's not like PSP has an outpouring of the sorts of games you're mentioning. Right now, DarkStalkers (a DC port) is it really... I think we still need to wait a little longer. E3 should be telling of where both machines are headed content wise.

I think it looks pretty visually blah but I've only seen screens. Might look better in motion. Ganbarion making it doesn't inspire faith though imo.

There is nothing on that psp list I would want to play on a handheld. Oldschool RPGs + Mario Kart + Castlevania = happy DS owner.

Do we have any Princess Crown screens yet? Here's hopin' it gets some enhancements, like real alpha effects. 24+ available megs of RAM plus Saturn-mauling 2D performance and a nice medium resolution should at LEAST guarantee a few extra touches.

If someone doesn't bring it to the States in a timely fasnion THERE WILL BE STABBING OF THE FACE

Oh, and Wipeout Pure is SO. DAMN. GOOD. Wish the tracks were a little longer, but Pure mode ownz me.

Yeah, Wipeout & Ridge Racer are the only games that really make me happy I bought a PSP. Racing games are excellent on this system, no doubt...

I dunno, I'm shockingly happy with MGA, Darkstalkers, Wipeout, and Untold Legends. I'd like to get Ridge Racers and Lumines, too, now that I've seen them, but despite their quality, they just aren't as compelling to me.

I dunno; the PSP launch is one of the best I've seen, right up there with the Dreamcast. I can't think of any other system that launched with as many excellent, polished games.

You're bonkers if you call something like Untold Legends polished. :lol

It's fun, but it's no BG:DA.

The load times on the system really kill the "polished" feel for the majority of the games for me, unfortunately.

Hmm. Best launch lineup ever. That's a good question.

The original NES launch lineup was pretty damn good(For 1985) with Super Mario Bros., Excitebike, Kung Fu, Ice Climber, Wild Gunman, Hogan's Alley, Wrecking Crew, Pinball, Mach Rider, Duck Hunt, Clu Clu Land, Baseball, Tennis, Golf, 10 Yard Fight, DK Jr. Math, Stack-Up, and Gyromite.

Gameboy Advance had an adequate lineup, too. Tony Hawk 2, Castlevania: COM, F-Zero, ChuChu Rocket, Rayman, Super Mario Advance, Konami Krazy Racers, GT Advance, Fire Pro Wrestling, Army Men Advance, Pinobee, Ready to Rumble 2, Earthworm Jim, Iridion 3D, Namco Museum, and Super Dodge Ball.

I also really enjoyed the Genesis launch with Thunder Force II, Space Harrier II, Last Battle, Super Thunder Blade, Altered Beast, and Tommy Lasorda Baseball.

Dreamcast is probably the only system that can come close with Sonic Adventure, Soul Calibur, NFL 2K, Ready 2 Rumble, Tokyo Xtreme Racer, Aerowings, TrickStyle, TNN Hardcore Heat, Power Stone, PenPen Trilceon, NFL Blitz, MK Gold, Monaco GP, Hydro Thunder, Blue Stinger, and Airfore Delta.

SNES had a crummy launch. As did Saturn. PS2 and PsX were Meh. The original Game Boy only launched with...Tetris. Game Cube's launch lineup was embarassing. I dont' recall the Xbox lineup being anything special either.

Looks like PSP could be the new king.

now that I think of it, PSP does seem to have the best launch ever, but none of the launch titles are compelling enough for me to want to buy it.

If I didn't already have an mp3 player, i'd be all over the PSP. As it is now, i'm going to wait til next year when memory stick prices are cheaper and there are compelling games to my taste out (like SRPGs).

I did buy a DS recently, but I haven't even bought a single DS game yet. I'm waiting for Advance Wars and Final Fantasy III.

I guess what this means is that price wins.

I agree. I love the PSP launch list of titles. Although I'd add the Xbox on your list.

To me, those 3 were AAA and kept me playing forever. I prefer quality over quantity. And since Halo is one of my greatest games of alltime, I loved it's lineup. I know what your thinking... Oddworld right? But I loved it. It still has the best cutscenes of alltime (bar none) and the ending was incredible. The gameplay was fun although it had some framerate probs. Anyhow, most people hated it so I know it's hard to understand. But I really did love it.

I liked the PS2 lineup back in the day. SSX, RR5, AC2, Kessen, DW2, ect. It hasn't aged quite as well though, so not so much anymore.

I'd say PSP is best, with DC and Xbox tied for second.

The Xbox launch consisted of Halo, Oddworld: Munch's Oddysee, NFL Fever 2002, Project Gotham Racing, and Fuzion Frenzy by Microsoft. In terms of third-party games, Electronic Arts had Madden NFL 2002, NASCAR Thunder 2002, and Cel Damage; Infogrames had NASCAR Heat 2002, TransWorld Surf, and Test Drive Off-Road Wide Open; Midway had NHL Hitz 2002; Eidos had Mad Dash Racing; TDK had Shrek; Rockstar had 4x4 EVO 2; THQ had Dark Summit; Konami had ship Air Force Delta Storm; Tecmo had Dead or Alive 3; and Activision had Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 2x.

Not too shabby of a lineup actually.

No, that's cool. You've got your reasons, that's all that matters.

I thought you were gonna start dropping the Cel-Damage and Nightcaster bomb on me and shit. :)

SNES had a crummy launch. As did Saturn. PS2 and PsX were Meh. The original Game Boy only launched with...Tetris. Game Cube's launch lineup was embarassing. I dont' recall the Xbox lineup being anything special either.
Naw, Saturn & SNES had excellent launches lineups (quality >>> quantity), both way better than Genesis imo. Xbox was great too, GameCube was decent and PS2 had an underrated launch imo. Oh and Game Boy also had Super Mario Land, Alleyway, Tennis and Baseball at launch. GBC had Tetris DX, Wario Land 2 and Game & Watch Gallery 2.

Hmm. I think the SNES only had 3 titles - Pilotwings, Super Mario World and F-Zero. SimCity and Gradius III came out about a week later, so that's basically 5 games. Good quality, that's true.

But the Game Boy launched in June of 1989 with Tetris as a pack-in.

In August, Nintendo finally released its first wave of games with Super Mario Land, Tennis, Baseball, and Alleyway.

Btw, the Saturn launched in May of 1995 along with Astal, Virtua Fighter, Clockwork Knight, Daytona USA, Panzer Dragoon, Romance IV: Wall of Fire, and Shinobi Legions. And I bought each and every game for that launch(What can I say, I was hyped.)

Edit: And for comparison's sake, The PSX launch: September 1995 with Ridge Racer, Wipeout, Rayman, Destruction Derby, Twisted Metal, WarHawk, Battle Arena Toshinden

Isn't it amazing how Wipeout, Ride Racer, and Twisted Metal all launched for both the PSP and the PSX? Tradition never hurts.

Really? Huh, I always thought it launched in August. :/

Nope, it launched with Virtua Fighter (pack in), Clockwork Knight, Panzer Dragoon, Daytona USA, Worldwide Soccer & World Series Baseball (every game was decent to great, especially at the time and nicely varied overall). Astal and Bug followed in the summer. Shinobi Legions and ROTK IV weren't until fall iirc.

Wipeout and Destruction Derby weren't launch iirc, but there were other games I think. Warhawk maybe wasn't launch too. Air Combat came days after launch though.

Really? I could have sworn on my life I got Astal and Bug both at launch. Because I had mine reserved at a Funco Land, and picked it up the day it came out along with the games.

Edit: Okay, I did a little research, and I can't find any site that puts Shinobi and ROTK IV under launch(or WSB for that matter), so I'm gonna say those weren't launch titles.

So, the launch games were: VF, Daytona, Clockwork Knight, Bug, Panzer Dragoon, and Worldwide Soccer.

BTW, I found an interesting thread over at Digital Press on this very subject here --> http://www.digitpress.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=22679&highlight=saturn+launch

Didn't Resident Evil also launch for Playstation? Playstation had a great launch IMO. If I remember right, they had a really good Gameday game, Destruction Derby, Resident Evil, Wipeout, Ridge Racer, Warhawk (great game here and is so underrated now) and a really good inhouse basketball and hockey game from 989... Shootout and the hockey name eludes me (NHL?).

I am getting that same magical feeling from the PSP as when the Playstation launched. It feels so much like it; having a lot of the same magical titles (RR, Wipeout). I wish it had that Warhawk game and some good sports games like Playstation had though. And I'd kill for a Resident Evil on PSP heh.

Definitely not. RE came out in late 1996.

ah ok.

side note: when did that doom game come out for Playstation? wasn't it somewhere near or around launch? i remember at the mall they had a bunch of playstations linked up with a ton of people playing it. was pretty good to if i recall.

Yeah I got my PSX in spring of '96 and Resident Evil had just come out for it.

Battle Arena Toshinden, WipeOut, Ridge Racer, Twisted Metal, NFL GameDay, and Jumping Flash! were some of the PSX launch titles IIRC.

WSB and WWS were both definitely launch and Bug definitely wasn't (it was August iirc). Astal was in July. Those were the only 2 games released until the "official" launch September 2nd 1995. So Saturn launch was...

-Virtua Fighter (Sega)
-Daytona USA (Sega Sports)
-Clockwork Knight (Sega)
-Panzer Dragoon (Sega)
-Worldwide Soccer: International Victory Goal (Sega Sports)
-World Series Baseball (Sega Sports)

...and for reference, the PS1 launch games were...

-Ridge Racer (Namco)
-Battle Arena Toshinden (SCEA)
-Rayman (UbiSoft)
-Total Eclipse Turbo (Crystal Dynamics)
-NBA Jam: Tournament Edition (Acclaim)
-Raiden Project (SCEA)
-Power Serve Tennis (Ocean)
-Street Fighter: The Movie (Capcom)
-Kileak: The DNK Imperative (SCEA)
-ESPN Extreme Games (SCEA)

...with finally the N64 launch games being...

-Super Mario 64 (Nintendo)
-Pilot Wings 64 (Nintendo)

The big games came actually in november. Tekken, Tsisted Metal, Jumping Flash, WipeOut, NFL GameDay, Destruction Derby and Doom were all released two months after launch.
