DS4 thumb sticks might have a problem?

WTF SONY!!

This is the 4th damn controller that has given me fucking issues!

right thumbstick has started to peel after just 2 days of using it! and the right trigger has started to stick!

its seriously making me consider selling my PS4. Its the worst made, most cheap built console I have ever owned. Its fucking disgusting!

Is there any place to buy covers in-store? My left stick is starting to peel and is going to be a disaster with FIFA.

found theseat GameStop. I've played a few hours of BF4 with them and they seem pretty good. they're bigger than the stock rubber, they extend the sticks a few mm, and they're concave. one side effect is that it makes it feel like the sticks are looser because it's adding leverage to the sticks.

I think you may be doing something wrong if you're on your fourth controller.

Are you sure you aren't too heavy handed with it? Get some of those rubber nubs for the sticks.

It's been 3 weeks and we still haven't received our replacement controller. Once we receive the new controller, we have to send out the 2nd one. This is unacceptable sony.

Nah man I treat my controller as if it were a cute baby dolphin. I even yell at my girlfriend if she touched the controller before she washes her hands.

Just came home with the 5th controller...and you guys need to believe when I say, after 1 hour of playing Warframe the thumbsticks have started to flake again. Every single DS4 controller I have owned has had a different texture or had some god damn issue. I am over this shit man!

Lucky my EB games is pretty good and will return and swap for a new one. The lady at the store told me a story of some poor guy returning his controller over 8 times! due to the same issue.

do you think maybe that EB has a bad batch or something?

I haven't had the issue with the left side (have launch console from amazon for reference), but the other night, it happened; but it happened on the right stick...I've noticed the left side has a slightly, more worn appearance compared to what it looked like brand new, but nothing I was too worried about. Then I noticed the next day that my right stick had a busted slit in it. Looks like there was def a bad batch going around. I need to contact Sony, but I'm waiting till I pick up a secondary controller. I've been playing quite a bit lately and I had a good, long KZ:SF session the other night (with some good wine ;) ) , but I'm a bit shocked it happend on the right hand stick. I would have placed bets on the left side going first.

I've been using the caps and wonder if maybe I should use them naturally without just in case they have this issue so I can get a replacement whilst they are both in warranty.

I have two day one controllers that have seen a decent amount of use and I would say there is an appropriate amount of wear on the sticks, nothing I would consider replacing.

I did have an issue with L1/R1 sticking after some serious Pinball Arcade sessions and did return one for that. Thing is, the replacement ended up the same way shortly after.

I found that the buttons actually pop off rather easily, without any disassembly, and a little spray of dry teflon lubricant has solved the issue on both my pads. Haven't had an issue since.

Have you always bought the controllers from that one store? If so, then there's a chance that all of them are like that.

Just to keep things in perspective.

My day -14 PS4 controller's left thumb stick just started to tare ever so slightly about a month ago. I immediately dropped my jaw and said "I can't believe those knee jerkers were right!"
I then pulled my foot out my butt and went to my local herbal enthusiasts gaming shop to buy some stick jimmies.
I've been doing fine ever since.

True story.

I've put over 60 hours into Dark Souls 2, 50 hours into the Last of Us (multiplayer), 30 hours at least into Killzone Shadowfall, 10 hours into Asscreed, and lots of hours of various other games (I prefer DS4 when possible on PS3 games)... the only issue I ran into so far is the right trigger started sticking, so I had to take it apart and clean it up. That issue was caused by some white dust (likely from wear of the button being used often) causing the trigger guide to not let the trigger move freely, found the fix on youtube, and it worked great. Judging the number of complaints of that issue I've seen on the web, that's a design flaw.. but luckily an easy to fix one.

As for thumbsticks, I don't know if I got lucky on my controllers thumbsticks, or if I just am not as aggressive with my thumbs as others, but I've had zero issues with peeling thumbsticks. But here is what mine looks like:

Edit: I guess there is a little scratch in the controller thumbstick.. couldn't see it without looking at the full scale of this photo. In person it's almost impossible to see. So I guess down the road it could be an issue. I'm not doubting others issues, but I've not had any major concerns here.

Alright, so after months of thinking everyone in this thread was either

A) Crazy
B) Coating their fingers in an acid/grease hybrid before playing
or
C) Going all Mario Party rotation on the sticks

The left one on both my controllers has started to peel. For people that have had this serviced under warranty - how does it work? Do you have to send it in first or do they ship you a new one? Is shipping covered or did you have to pay?

The left stick on one of my controllers peeled slightly the other day. This was after I let a 6 year old use it to play fifa though so I'm putting it down to how some people use the sticks, my other controller is still mint

You said 6 th on the other thread?. Still on my day one controller must be 500 hours of play by now.

I've had the surface of the rubber become smooth on my left thumbstick, but I did have my thumb bandaged due to slicing my thumb open, so that could have been the rough bandages wearing it down. There was a lot of black residue on the bandages too.

I did have a sticking R1 button too, but that sorted itself out after some rigorous Pinball Arcade sessions.

None of those games have an excessive amount of thumbstick action though. I thought the same as you, my controllers were fine, had been playing plenty of Killzone and AC4, but then I downloaded Strider. Was dodging with the left stick like crazy and it started to flake. Fifa is the same way, and Knack too to a certain extent. Once you play something where you have to rapidly move the stick back and forth a bunch, the friction causes the rubber to peel, like an eraser.

Am I the only one not having issues? I've had mine since the beginning of February, I've used it almost every day since then, but my sticks are still fine and my triggers don't stick at all.

I've had to replace my controller twice (am on the third one). The left analog stick peeled on the first one, right stick on the second. Really frustrating. Shame because I love everything else about the controller.

Nope. Have had my pair since launch and still good. I will say that the shape of the top of the analogs makes it very easy for your fingernails to dig into them in order to not slip off, as I'm finding with more fast paced games like Rayman Legends.

Anyone else get a sticky L1 when they press it on the right side? Thankfully it doesn't register as being pressed when it's stuck, but it's making shield use in Dark Souls 2 a little more unreliable than I'd like :P

Any tips for fixing it as well?

Annoying as I can;t have used the controller for more than 100 hours

I haven't had any issues untill now and I've played a lot since I've bought my PS4 in november, but you guys are creeping me out with your weird fingers, so I've bought a silicone cover for the thumbsticks... woooow, thank you guys for worrying me out, because thanks to that silicone cover, the thumbstick is a little bigger and not it feels a lot better (I have been always found the DS4 thumbsticks a bit smaller) and the grip with the covers is awesome.

Now, I'm not worry about the damages and I feel more confortable with the size and grip of the thumbstick.
Btw, I bought 10 covers for 1,5€ in ebay...

My controller's still doing fine... I played through all of inFAMOUS, most of Killzone, and about 40 hours of ACIV. Not sure what other people are doing to get them to mess up.

My brother has been using my other DS4 on his computer. I don't think he's had any problems, either.

Man, I dont know why you guys aint buying analog covers until this issue is fixed. I ALWAYS buy analog covers on all my controllers from any console that has analogs. Tey were down. But with covers, they were down, they are easily replaced. At $3-$5 on amazon……….cant find an excuse not to get em.

Sometimes I swear people don't read the thread. They are not doing anything to get them to mess up, the sticks are failing.

I live in constant fear of my controller getting fucked up. I hope my controller is part of a new, better batch, since I just got my PS4 a few days ago.

I wouldnt recommend these....they are to high. It doesnt feel good :(

spend a few cents on some stick condoms and forget the problem ever existed. more comfortable too. i have a blue pad with a red and a blue cap on the sticks. my sticks were fine incidentally but I covered them just in case.

Thanks. I went and bought these and they're perfectly suitable, at least for FIFA.

Sony knows it's a problem, don't know why some people still try to blame the users instead..

Will soon be on my third DS4 while i am still using my DS3 from like 7 years ago and it still looks and works perfectly.

Definitely a problem with the rubber not being able to cope well enough with friction.

Shoulder buttons aren't the best either.

I've read through quite a bit of this thread, and all I've seen is people talking about how the top layer of their sticks are tearing/peeling off, and it hasn't happened to me yet. I'm really curious as to why that's happening to some.

Maybe it's because my hands don't sweat.. I dunno.

Edit: Upon closer inspection of my controller, I see that there is a slight indentation at the bottom of my left stick.. but I wouldn't have even noticed it, had I not looked really close for it. Yeah, my sticks are fine. Hope mine don't start peeling, too.

Well, Sony had to make revisions to their controller last generation, so I guess they might have to do it again.

You might have read some but obviously not enough, my hands don't sweat at all during gaming (hardly ever) because my hands are quite cold most of the time, yet ill be on my third DS4 soon.

The rubber can't handle friction very well, so depending on your playstyle it will become a problem sooner or later. People have also noticed a number of different rubber being used.

You might have got Lucky with your sticks or you might see a problem arise sonetime in the future but it most definitely is a problem.

Second controller now splitting.

I should not be required to purchase thumb pads to "protect" the controller.

Never had this happen on other controllers. Very weird.
