DS4 thumb sticks might have a problem?

So this is starting to spread to more and more reports, just like expected. We'll see what happens after the console actually comes out and people actually are using the thing.

Your battle cries were heard.

Shocking news, their previous controllers were of premium quality.

Yep. Design issues aside, the build quality was never a problem.

If anything, the 360 controllers are almost the opposite. Great design, but so so build quality. The triggers on my Silver twistable D-pad controller squeak a lot.

The 360 pad w the transforming dpad still has a shitty dpad. But it also had the best analog grips ever. Impossible to wear those down unlike thr stock ones that wear. Does the xb1 use the same analogs as the transforming one did?

JUST played with my ex flat-mate's DS4... It's not as rubbery as I presumed, it's more plasticy... But I love it. I love all of it, except for the face buttons. I prefer the 360 or DS3 analog face buttons.
Not sure about the D pad, but it's not bad. I can't see how the sticks' skins would rip. I've ripped the 360's analog skins (because of FNround3 ) and I've ripped my DS3 analog skin (from playing FIFA 12), but I don't think I could rip the DS4 skins.....

we shall see.

Man some of you guys are really freaking out. The rubber cap on the sticks is wearing out prematurely on some of the controllers. It's very likely that a manufacturing mistake has caused the rubber to not bond properly. I'm all for making Sony aware of the problem, but don't lose your heads over it.

45 hours. Controller is fine. I sympathize with people having problems but it seems evident it is either a bad batch of controllers or bad luck.

Calm down. Breathe in....breathe out....grab your receipt....drive to store....breathe in....breathe out...hand controller to clerk...point at receipt....breathe in...breathe out...accept new controller.

There see. Its all good.

I posted this in the PS4 OT thread, but I figured I'd cross post it here just because it is relevant.

I can also confirm that the rubber on the DS4 sticks are very fragile. They feel very good though, very grippy. I don't think I'm going to have much of a problem because my thumbs tended to stay inside the rim in the center of the sticks naturally. But, I did a little test. I hope no one gets mad. The left stick did have noticeable wear, so I tested it by digging my nail into it a little bit and it actually cut through the rubber a tiny bit. It didn't cause huge damage but it's easy to tell that this rubber will wear away pretty quickly. My guess is that Sony went with this rubber for grip, because it feels very nice, but the downside is that if people play rough with it, it will give away. Cue the coming generation of worried gamers who are picky which friends they let play their system. I can imagine letting some friend play and just wearing the shit out of those sticks.

besides that negative, the controller felt amazing. They are on sale, so I think a lot of you know that already.
I'm pretty stoked to get the system. And a recommendation as well: try to find some thumb stick covers for the controller, because if you are a rough player, it will probably wear out quicker than you are used to.

Just to add, I think that the rubber quality is not poor, it actually feels very grippy and nice to the touch. It's unfortunate how fragile it is, though.

yes its a non-issue until its actually proven to be one...and yes, Sony will replace them...even if they never do a redesign (they will if its really that bad)...your controller is covered under a 1-year manufacturers warranty...just keep getting a free one...

Yeah that sounds like a fun old plan. Play for a month till it wears down, send it in, don't play for a couple weeks till you get a replacement, repeat. No problem!

you obviously dont know NeoGAF lol

Yup, GAF chews analogs. You figured it out.

I tried the same thing on mine and I didn't put the slightest scratch on the nubs.

There's got to be a bad batch associated with this if its so black and white.

No people...not gaf as we are not a hivemind...get excited with a launch coming...eat up news either positive or negative...and blow it up into something extreme on either side.

Imagine if you will this had happened 5 years into the ps3 or 360...what would the response be?

I imagine it would be like "Hmm that kinda sucks but oh well will buy another controller"

Instead it's all doom and gloom, and the rubber looks like shit, and people comparing it to the RROD.

bring it back to where you bought it...95+% of the time they are gonna swap it out no questions asked...they get to send it back to Sony as a damaged good and get credit for it...

if they give you a hard time...the first thing id do is raise a stink with the store/call the corporate office...likely the store will now replace it...

if not, last resort you send it off to Sony...

Yup, GAF chews analogs. You figured it out.

GAF is home to the enthusiasts of the enthusiasts...if you cant wrap your head around the things that go on around here, then its your own problem

All companies test the buttons for expected lifespan like that. I can guarantee Sony does as well.
Perhaps. From the things we're seeing in this thread, it sounds like some more rigorous testing might have payed off. That video showed what looks like quite a rigorous testing facility. Hard to know how comprehensive any one company is about such testing unless they pull back the curtain like that video did.

Believe me, I'm really hoping this stuff isn't widespread. We'll know soon enough when a million or more people are banging away at these things.

Or maybe they tested it and saw it was fine. Sent it to manufacture and worker grunt #1 did not mix the polymers for the plastic in the right proportions resulting in some weak sticks? Just a thought.

What a bunch of thieving assholes, 5 dollars for 4 rubber thingies, I bet these don't cost them even 20 cents.

True. But yet, my plastic protective casing for my phone cost somewhere around $30, and is just one piece of plastic. Probably cost them like a dollar to make. So I guess it could be worse.

EDIT: I wonder if Gamestop carries them as well. They are the same company as EB, anyway. I'll probably pick up a pack the next time I'm in the store.

I guess anything's possible, I hope you're right. It would be pretty odd to have several people on this particular forum happen to get one from that one bad batch, though. Like I said, we'll know soon enough if we see an explosion of negative stories from users over the next few weeks. Looking forward to trying one out for real in 3 days.

Well considering about 75% of those were defending myself from either being called a troll or an xbot spreading fud. I started in this thread by sayin... hey wait a minute my controller does this too now that you mention it, and people laughed me and others off.

Including this guy, that's alright though laugh it off, if it turns out true I was right though, along with the others in this thread.

Yeah because it took 5 years for it to happen... if these worries turn out true it'll take 2 weeks for this to happen and there won't be a replacement option out there, because whatever you swap it for at the store will have the same issue. Ultimately it'll be the most minor tweak to get the rubber more durable, but there are already millions of controllers out in the wild, so tracking em all down and replacing them is the hard part.

Should never feel like you have to defend yourself so much man, it isn't needed. I am just amazed you have over 9% of the posts in this huge thread.

And you will have gained what exactly from being right?

You ignored my point and substituted your own. You work for mythbusters?

My point was that take all of this news, transplant it halfway into a generation and you get diddly squat.

We get this can be a potential problem. You have made that abundantly clear. But it is also the simplest thing for sony to tweak a controller and say "Hey sorry guys worker grunt #1 messed up the mixing of some polymers. Take your controller into where you bought it and you will have a fixed controller waiting for you"

It wasn't really myself, but I get pretty into debates/discussions especially surrounding "conspiracies" or any other ridiculous theories. Seriously some of the responses within the first few pages are embarrasing. Specifically the stuff about there being cracks in the controller or pubes sprinkled on the controller, or that he took sandpaper to the stick, etc, etc. I don't see why people had to think I was some microsoft insider starting a smear campaign. I think it's more important to accept an issue, fix it, and move on.

I never substituted my own, I explained why saying 5 years in is different. You talked about a device that is sold at the launch, rendering the console itself fragile in the eyes of the consumer. 5 years in there are all sorts of alternatives and proven hardware. When something bad happens in launch it does damage to the brand, and the confidence in the company. My whole point of arguing it though didn't even start as "is it true or not?", it started as, well why do we immediately jump to "FUD! XBOT! GRASPING AT STRAWS SINCE THE PS4 IS PERFECT!" instead of saying well lets look into this.

Bolded is the part you have yet to do. Multiple fixes are available be it a new controller or thumb pads.

That's why you should always buy that plastic crap from ebay's chinese sellers for scraps until cheap 3D printers arrive. It really pissed me off that these greedy fucks are robbing us like that.

Sorry but I got several worn down 360 analogue grips that disagree with you. I admit I'm not gentle when I play, but not everyone's gonna be.

Amen to that. Crappy DPad aside, those Analog Sticks are the best I've ever used.

"transforming dpad" is a separate Xbox 360 controller that has unique Analog Sticks. They aren't the typical Xbox 360 Analog Sticks.

RROD did not seem to damage the brand. Why would faulty sticks?

Maybe people jumped onto the Fud xbot train (I didn't) but how bout we let the issue rest until launch?

Apparently there is a bad batch, you as a consumer has several options. Take the controller back and get a free one, put pads on thumb sticks etc. There, problem identified and solved. Now based on your chart
