My current DVD player is giving signs of crapping out on us, so I am looking into the possibility of upgrading technology and getting a new player that is capable of recording DVDs.

I found an LG model that seems particulary intriguing for 300 bucks. It has the ability to record to Dual Layer DVD format, plus all the other formats. It would be cool to get something with a DVR in it, but I already am paying Dish network 5 bucks a month for that, and it is serving us well. (I don't want to drop 500+ on something right now, blame it on the XBox360)

I don't give a damn about recording to VHS tapes, like the majority of players out on the market offer. What do the firewire ports offer?

Anyone have any advice on this?

firewire is for DV input from your camcorder. If you have one, its worth having.

I sometimes wish I had one, and I have a Tivo. Its much easier just to press play on tivo/Xbox and record on the DVD recorder, than to rip/convert/vob this and that on a PC, and then the DVDs don't bloody work.

Just see what's out there and compare. I got a refurbished Koss DVD recorder in January (it's straight to disc, it doesn't have a hard drive), and outside of it freezing up every once in a while, it's been pretty cool. Recording to VCR is a laughable prospect for me now.
