I like Ang Lee, I like Brokeback Mountain, but it's not a classic or anything. The best thing the film does is bother to look at the lives of the wives, but it should have done that more. The emotional charge between the main characters is kinda just thrown in, not explained as to why the two of them have any connection outside of a 'first time'. Lee made more intesne romances in CTHD than with Brokeback. The most interesting part of the movie was how the lies affect the people around them.

1. Because being big means you're a good actor.

Who's big and not good actor? Case closed.

2. Uh, Maguire isn't really that big. How much has he done lately? How much of it is even worth talking about?

Yeah, an Oscar nomination and Academ Award winning film sandwhiched in between two of the highest grossing films of all-time is small potatoes. Plus the new Soderbergh flick he shot and the sequel to the greatest film of all-time are next. Poor Maguire!

3. He was about to be fired, not leave. Because he let himself think that people actually saw Spider-Man to see him.

We did see Spider-Man for Maguire. And if he was about to be fired, how come he got a RAISE, huh?

ICE CREAM WHY CAN'T YOU QUIT IT.

Umm....Besides the fact that it was the sequel to effin Spiderman, people went to see Maquire. He was Spiderman.

When people think Stallone, they Say Rambo and Rocky.

Bruce Willis--> Die Hard

Sam Jackson---> Snakes on a Plane (j/k Star Wars and pulp fiction)

Arnold--> Terminator

Maguire----> Spiderman

Etc...

It was his role. And...Maguire is a pretty good actor(nowhere near the best though). His nominations do mean something.

What, exactly, does Spider-Man have anything to do with this thread other than Willco's hard-on for it? Why bring it up in the first place? It has nothing to do with Brokeback Mountain other than the fact that they're both movies.

As for Brokeback, it's hardly one of the greatest films ever, or even the best film of 2005, but it's by no means a bad film or even a mediocre one.

No, it's mediocre.

Spider-Man was brought up due to a neverending smear campaign against the greatest franchise of all-time and its noble supporters. Why do gay cowboy lovers hate so much? Did you learn nothing from Brokeback Mountain, if nothing else, then how not to make a decent movie?

All the conspiracy theories are true.

Mark my words. In five, ten, or twenty years, the histrionic whining of Academy-Award-winner Crash will have become a thing of distant, cloudy memory (call it the racial-tension equivalent of fellow Best Picture-winner Marty), but Brokeback Mountain will only increase in reputation and importance.

WTF?

I'm going to make a movie about gay ninjas. A story about a forbidden and secretive relationship between two gay ninjas and their lives over the years of battling awesome pirates.

It will be the first movie to fuse the high production values and top notch acting of Hollywood with the hardcore porn of the porn industry. The ninjas are going to be totally hot lesbos.

I'm sorry but was Jake G in the masterpiece known as The Wizard? I didn't think so. Therefore ...

T Mac > Beau Bridges > Christian Slater >>>>>>>>>>>>>>> Jake

And Spiderman was fucking boring.

I haven't seen Brokeback yet. I hear those cowboys bang each other like they had infinite ammo. What I'm really trying to say is that I'm not gay but I'm afraid my penis will move during the banging. Did any of your penises move during the banging and did it change your life in any way?

Anyone hear/see the commercial for the DVD release?

Basically it implies the movie won Movie of the Year ... to take advantage of those that didn't pay attention to the Acedemy Awards :\

Pretty fucking lame IMO.

I seriously can't recall any movie doing that before. Every other movie itemizes the award(s) a movie received ... they don't give an ambiguous statement that the uninitiated will confuse with Movie of the Year.

I didn't see the commerical for the DVD (got a link?), and I don't know what exactly did it "imply", but Brokeback Mountain did infact win "Movie of the Year" in MANY events, the Oscar is not the only important award, and in many peoples' opinion, not the most important one by a long shot.

"Movie of the Year" awards won by Brokeback Mountain:

BAFTA Awards: Best Film

Golden Globes, USA: Best Motion Picture - Drama

Boston Society of Film Critics Awards: Best Picture

Broadcast Film Critics Association Awards: Best Picture

Dallas-Fort Worth Film Critics Association Awards: Best Picture

Independent Spirit Awards: Best Feature

London Critics Circle Film Awards: Film of the Year

Los Angeles Film Critics Association Awards: Best Picture

New York Film Critics Circle Awards: Best Film

San Francisco Film Critics Circle: Best Picture

Florida Film Critics Circle Awards: Best Film

Southeastern Film Critics Association Awards: Best Picture

Vancouver Film Critics Circle: Best Film

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0388795/awards

And that's just a fraction of all the awards and nominations the film received, check the link for a full list.

Like I said I didn't see the commerical for the DVD, but if they didn't specifically imply that the movie won the Oscar for best picture, then I believe they have every right to imply that it did actually won movie of the year, since it did at pretty much every event, just not at the Oscars.

Exactly! That's the point! This movie isn't going to spoon-feed you their love story like a high school drama production. There are many subtleties from both characters that show their true affection for each other...their actions, their words, are filtered through the environment and times they live in. They aren't afforded big showy declarations of love ala some typical hollywood love story. It's there in the story nonetheless, and Ang Lee packs each scene with TONS of references. Both male leads did a lot of action, not just the words, but their voices, their looks, their body language...these were completely "real" characters, not Jake Gyllenhaal as "Gay Cowboy #1" and Heath Ledger as "Gay Cowboy #2"

As for the commercial, Naked Snake is right...yes they do call it the "Movie of the year", but they don't say it won the Oscar for it. I think they say that first, and then go on to mention that it was nominated for 8 Oscars.
