DW5s Story Mode is magnificent!

It all just comes together so nicely. I loved DW4 dont get me wrong, but for all its improvements, things like duels just pissed me off. As did weapon leveling over weapon finding.

This takes the best of 4, and the best of 3, and improved story telling, visuals, and scripting and makes them have a drunken orgy producing thousands of wonderful DW5 copies.

Man DW5 Empires will rock, and this will be the first DW game I buy XL for.

This thread might be a little too biased, but... I'm trying to decide on trading God of War straight for DW5. I've already finished GoW on Hard and it rocked my world. What say you, GAF?

its not really biased, some games are just good. DW5 is an awesomely addictive game of ass whoopin wholesale.

DW5 does epic YOU vs EVERYONE much better now that its just you and your bodyguard, and the on screen troop count is so obviously beefed up. Charging up the steps to the center of the castle with an army rushing you feels SO FUCKING BADASS!

Yeah, if you've never played a DW title, you're in for a huge fuckin' treat with 5.

And if YOU have played a DW title, DW5 graphics, presentation, and polish will inevitably win you over. At first I felt a little jaded towards it, but now I'm madly addicted. It's just too damn good.

My history with DW is rocky. I bought DW3 for $20 after being impressed with playing DW4 at a friend's. Even though I only played Story(?) mode probably three or four times total, with some co-op, I liked it a lot. Later, I picked up 4E and traded away DW3. I really like the single-player that 4E has going, but was a tiny bit disappointed in lack of co-op Free/Story mode. For a month now, I've been considering picking up Samurai Warriors for $10 new from the store I work at, but severely disliked the way they did the musou gauge in co-op. SWXL fixes that, but I don't feel the need to own it when I already know someone that has it. It all comes down to whether or not DW5 can grab me by the nuts and never let go. (Well, at least until it's done with me and tosses me aside like a used rag.)

DW5 story mode is much cooler dude!

Individual story for all 48 characters! Gives you incentive to play through the game with every one!

I do miss the post battle report in DW5 though. I liked watching my green triangle go across the screen and kick ass.

Haha yeah seeing generals just get axed one by one. That WAS pretty awesome. Man I was done playing for the night but now youve got my fighting spirit up again!

I never, ever, ever bothered to watch that shit, nor did I ever watch it in Ace Combat. I'm glad to see it gone.

After all this ranting and raving about Dynasty Warriors, I decided to pick up DW4 on the cheap ($12 shipped) Sounds like it will be well worth it. Does Empires and XL just add more characters and story to the regular game or is there something more on top of all that?

I bought Empires yesterday, and it's the first DW I've owned. It seems pretty difficult just yet, because I'm not quite used to all of the mechanics (which have more to them than I imagined), and because I need to get better at the whole supply-line-maintenance thing.

Zhang Jiao is going down!

Good God, Lu Bu's musou mode is incredibly easy. I mashed my way through it in a little less than 45 minutes and got all sorts of overpowered weapons and items.

Maybe I should try it again on Chaos mode and see how tough he truly is

Haha its freaking Lu Bu!

Jiji: basically you gotta focus on checkpoints if the map says you have to take the camp, if it says take the general you can sometimes just bum rush.

Your fellow generals and liutenants will only really go as far as your last checkpoint then defend a lot. If you bum rush the general you sometimes get overwhelmed pretty easy by things like the siege engines which make me cry.

Also think ahead before invading. I secured a key victory by supporting a 1 territory empire against a 7 territory empire despite being allied to both. I had to choose who. Every invasion and defense and alliance and proposal makes as big a difference as your actions on the battlefield do.

Your generals and yourself can get pretty beefed up tho.

DW5 added need versions of checkpoints with attack and defense bases which can greatly turn the tide of battle and provides fantastic new tension points on the field o battle. If you enjoy empires 4 id suggest picking up DW5 when its within an affordable range.

Romance of the 3 Kingdom I-IX
Dynasty Warriors I-V(not including expansions)
Dynasty Tactics I-II

I think we can agree that Koei pretty much join the likes of Capcom and Nintendo when it comes to milking a series.

They took out create a character in this version right?

To be fair, they've released ROTTK games since forever and only one (or two?) in this generation, and DW1 was a fighting game released in 1997. But sure, they've released a lot of DW games and clones (SW) lately.

OK, I'm doing better now. Last time I started as Gongsun Zan, and I was trying to invade Luo Yang right away while Zhang Jiao was there, so of course he was overpowered. This time I started as Ma Teng and took a neighboring Yellow Turban territory, then the game took me into that scripted Yellow Turbans meatgrinder battle. Now I'm working on kicking Dong Zhuo's ass.

I like the base-securing and the strategy involved in attacking...it reminds me a lot of RTK both on the map and during battles (like how you have to maintain supply lines and take enemy bases on the way to attacking cities in that). Of course it's way more simple, but still fun.

This is fun enough that I think I'll get DW5 later this year (gotta space things out - I want Kessen III, RTKX, and that Colosseum game Koei is publishing).

No kidding. Don't forget Nobunaga's Ambition, which has been running as long as RTK in Japan, Kessen I-III, and Uncharted Waters I-IV+Gaiden+Online. Also, RTK is up to 10 now. The difference between Koei and Capcom is that Koei maintain a consistent level of quality throughout their milking. ;)

Yeah but it sucked in DW4, and was passable in DW4 Empires. They focused on the single established characters in 5 which was a smart move in my mind

The improvements in the dynasty warriors series are solid and greatly improve each iteration, unlike street fighter or something.

About the ONLY thing DW4 has over DW5 is the music. The Yellow turban chant is just classic. "EEeeiyeaaa....EEEeeeiyAAAAaaa" The tunes in DW5 are so completely forgettable.

The punctuated narrative driven campaigns in DW5/SWXL definately make for a more digestible gaming block than the gimongous 'kingdom wide' ordeal DW4 threw your way. You can plow through a characters story in about 2 hours of overall play, good enough to keep the momentum going and certainly garners more interest in replayability among the 45+ other heroes.
