Dynasty Warriors 5

Does anybody have this yet? EBgames said it ships in 24 hours. Can this be home of the future official discussion and such?

oK there is a screen from the intro...

I'm off to go get it in a few I think.

Apparently Japanese voice track got nixed from the US though.

What's new about it? I keep buying these damn Dynasty/Samurai Warrior games, kill about 200 guys then and then just up and quit.

Where's Dennis580 when you need him.

Been awhile since I played it, but didn't DW4 have the Japanese track? I know Sam War did.

I think only 3 had the japanese voice option. I don't mind the cheesy english voice acting, it seems to enhance the greatness of the butt rock.

Oh and my local EB got it today, so I will be owning it soon.

4 didn't have the Japan track, IIRC. I'll be getting mine later tonight hopefully! Have thunderstorms and tornado watches here as a huge storm is about to crash the upper midwest but it isn't gonna stop me from getting Dynasty Warriors 5 after work!!!

Howling storm + Dynasty Warriors 5 = bliss.

I'm picking up my preordered copy but to be honest...I can't take anymore good game releases. This season has killed my play time just like a latter day Xmas. Late spring/summer better be dry.

Picked it up today and started Cao Pi's musou mode. The graphics, draw distance, and number of enemies onscreen really has been improved a lot. Pretty awesome so far.

As far as voices go, I didn't see a japanese voice option. KOEI went with the same set of US actors they've been using from DW4/SW, and most of the voice actors are the same as DW4, with a few changes. Yuan Shao and Xiahou Dun are the same, but Cao Cao was changed to whoever does Shingen's voice in SW, and Sima Yi has Hideyoshi's voice, it seems...

It should not have a Japanese voice track cause the characters are Chinese. Simple oversight :D

Right, but being a Japanese game, it has Japanese voices recorded for it. Plus they sound a hell of a lot better than the English voices do. :)

I mean, I just got Dynasty Warriors 5 today, and it ROCKS; love the improved true Musou attacks, the new character with NUNCHUCKS (finally), improved level design/more colorful levels, etc/, but man, does the American voice acting SUCK. Good for a laugh, though. :lol

I'm not one of those people against the idea of dubbing a game/movie/TV series for localization as long as the voice actors they use have talent. The people Koei gets for its games clearly are lacking greatly in acting ability. :)

Chinese dialogue (but wouldn't there be a problem of having different dialects since the characters are from all over China? It still wouldn't be "authentic" if it just in Mandarin, for example. :) )

Mandarin's pretty much the accepted language. Way better than Japanese, in fact, even Koei once asked in a survey what people preferred. Apparently, not enough people gave a shit about the alternate voice tracks.

Oh man a Tornado warning kicked in as I was driving to get this game! I wasn't going to be denied though!!! :lol But now it is over and it is time to play! :D

For people with the game; how does it compare to the previous games? I'm one of those people who liked 3 more than 4, how does it compare in that regard?

Hooray!

I don't have to buy these one.

God damn it Koei! >:|

You know, I think cutting the Japanese language track is just another cheap incentive to sell compies of the Dynasty Warriors Pimp My Ride version six months down the road to cunty fuckers like myself.

You're right Wasabi, Koei totally dissed it's fans Tecmo style with that poll. :X

:O

Just played through the first mission with Sun Shang Xiang! Holy shit this is like the ultimate game for Dynasty Warriors fans!!!! :D

I love the new bodyguard system now with just one bodyguard who is much stronger. My bodyguard actually runs around and kicks some ass! :lol Double masou attacks are cool, too! No slowodown so far, some minor fogging in the distance, and no enemy popup! I also like some of the destructable enviroments. A couple archers were ticking me off by pegging me from a tower. I ran up and gave it some slashes and all of a sudden the tower came crashing down and the archers on top of it taken out! ROX.

the best bodyguard type is the healing one. god the one i have saved my ass so many times.

It's still a hell of a lot better than the english voice acting in DW3, Lyte.

It's funny though, I actually enjoyed the english voice acting in the SW games, and those were composed of most of the same actors. Hmm...

For people with the game; how does it compare to the previous games? I'm one of those people who liked 3 more than 4, how does it compare in that regard?

You'll love 5 then. 5 ditches a lot of the changes 4 made, and brings back many aspects of 3 (items that give approximate stat boost numbers instead of levels, finding weapons instead of leveling them up, no duels, higher body counts, etc)

I never played Dynasty Warriors 4 Empires, so I'm guessing some of these cool aspects were ripped into Dynasty Warriors 5? Everyone knows about the gate structure, but there are also different enemy encampments within the map now too! In the first map I took out an enemy attack camp and an enemy supply camp. I gotta read up on how these camps affect the tide of battle! :D

Dynasty Warriors 5 goes back to an individual story for every character, instead of having one story for each kingdom. The presentation in this game is top notch. Voice acting is hit and miss. I noticed in the options menu there is a choice for Dolby Pro Logic II!

I don't see how Japanese tracks are more athentic than English ones, people.

Then again, I know some people (not this forum) who think Chinese is closely related to Japanese. :lol

Well, I know the reason I usually prefer Japanese audio is because they seem to do a better job getting voice actors. Even though I wouldn't know what they're saying without the subtitles/text, the tones/emotions usually fit much better. With english dubs they often just grab their janitor/grandmother to do voices.

One other nice thing about the Japanese version is the ability to install part of the game on the HDD. Granted, the stage loading times aren't substantial, but it's even better to remove them.

After two weeks of playing for ~4 hours per day, I'm basically at the point where I've rounded up all the items and have used everyone I wanted to, so I think I'm basically done with it. It seems to me that it takes a lot less effort to max-out a fresh character, and getting Rare Items isn't nearly as much of a pain in the ass as it was in DW4. Also, the improvement I enjoy the most is the evolution weaponry; Sun Jian + evo weapon + wind scroll = more juggling than a circus.

I meant using only Mandarin as the language in Dynasty Warriors still wouldn't be historically accurate. :)

HEALING bodyguard?!? Sounds like the subgenerals in DW PSP. Gotta start using that one. :D

I don't even remember the English voice acting in DW3. I barely even REMEMBER DW3. All these games are a blur. :) I don't mind bad voice acting; actually, I enjoy it in video games. Makes them more entertaining.

Despite having owned DW4 and Empires at different points, I never really played much of them, and never finished DW3. I did play a large amount of Samurai Warriors (never finished the game with all the characters), and I aim to play DW5 all the way through.

No one is saying that they are more authentic...just that the voice actors sound better. Then again, Bebpo said in another thread that the voice acting in the Japanese version wasn't the greatest, either, but to me even just the characters' battle cries sound better in Japanese, never mind the story dialogue.

Dude, where I live, ANYTHING Asian is automatically "Chinese" to people. :/

Pretty fun so far. Feels more like a powered up 3 than a continuation of 4. In my limited opinion at least. Voice acting is REALLY bad. That said...I could care less about the lack of Japanese voice in this series, I know the damn story at this point. Too well :lol. I like the new bodyguard system, especially the chained Musou attacks. Very useful in killing some bosses. I've also got to say that the bodyguards are much more aggressive and useful in this version.

Graphics are cleaner. The fog is missing and I haven't seen any real instances of slowdown (that's...amazing for this game). I still see a lot of enemy pop up, though.

Yeah, this really feels like Dynasty Warriors 3 Plus or something.

Sadly, it just makes me wanna play Empires. I appreciate the visual improvements, but I think I'm officially starting to weary of the series. At least it took 4 major installments (discounting the PSone fighter) plus several expansion packs and a spinoff title to get me there: congrats, Koei!

Attention Koei: I will not buy another DW title on the current generation of consoles. However, if DW6 is a PS3 launch title, i will pick it up on launch day.

I have to agree with you a little. I enjoyed it last night, but it absolutely felt done. And not half as fresh as Empires. Damn.

Well, it's likely this is the last DW on PS2 (barring any expansion packs) so we'll likely get part 6 on PS3.

Empires with the DW5 engine would rock hard, though.

Cao Pi kicks a lot of ass. He's the only character I've used so far. It does feel more like DW3 instead of 4, which is good. And I like the new bodyguard system.

I've only played a couple maps so far, but EGADS the music is atrocious in this game! Even by cheesy buttrock standards this stuff is almost as bad as the VA.

The music in DW4 is so far ahead of this garbage. I really hope I just got unlucky with the few bad apples in the music selection.

Really? I didn't think so; sounded like the typical terrible butt-rock to me.

But that's like saying that one pile of shit smells slightly less horrible than another. :)

Yeah the music isn't as good as part four, but that is the only thing that is worse! Just played through the Battle of Chi Bi and the level really shows how good of an improvement the game has made! I think I just set my all time record for number of officers taken out in a level myself by KOing 18! I think I took out every officer on the map by myself! I got some mad powerups in weapons and items on Ling Tong's second stage and went to town on the 3rd! ONe thing I do miss from DW5 is the post battle summary. They don't do that anymore as it goes to a story scene instead!

I expect mine to arrive tomorrow. Just in time for the weekend, excellent.

And I'm pretty sure this isn't the first DW game where you can tear down archer towers.
