E-mail, Email, or email?

Which is the most "proper" way of writing it? When I'm being informal I always write "email", but what if you're writing something serious/official/important?

My dictionary says e-mail.
And I'd assume the capitalization deals with standard rules in English.

Every magazine I've worked for used email.

If you wanted to sound serious and important I suppose you could use "Electronic mail" :lol

It's e-mail. The E can be a capital when 'e-mail' is the first word of the sentence, like all words.

The OED lists email, with e-mail as an alternate spelling. It also has a seperate entry for e-mail as a verb, which is a bit odd. At any rate, it looks like there isn't really a standardized spelling, so pick email or e-mail depending on whether or not you feel like busting out the hyphen.

e-mail is the business/official way to write it. email is more of a casual way. I guess you can choose accordingly.

I remember that Wired magazine used to write email for years, but then they decided to become a bit more uptight and started writing e-mail.

EEEEEeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeEEEeEEEEeEeEeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeEeEeEeEeEEE-male

I know that it's not the correct spelling (neither in English nor in German nor in any other language afaik), but I prefer "eMail" as it reminds me of eBay and eMule and just looks cool.
