That being said, the amount of apologetic excuses we're getting from Xbox fans is pretty entertaining. It was a almost incomprehensibly weak showing by Microsoft, but I have no illusions that they won't fix this, startle us at E3, and be a significantly competative force.

E3 is a weekend away. I'm not sure how much different it's going to be. Hopefully there'll be more games, though, and amongst them, some gems. I think they said there might be ~40 games at the show? How many have we seen sofar?

You think? The PS2 demos were pretty spot on. I'd expect most of the PS3 stuff next week to be realtime.

Judging by what the guys on B3D are saying, the R500 may not be a hell of a lot more powerful than 2 6800s in SLI*, which is apparently the current setup in the PS3 kit, so..that (even though it's unfinished) + (unfinished) cell + more ambitious developers could result in a believably better looking show.

I certainly think there is much scope for believable graphical difference there..I should hope so anyway.

*Some there seem to think R500 has circa 2x the shading power of a R420 per cycle (though half the fillrate, and less polygon pushing power - the latter not being so significant anyway). so the kind of leap you'd expect given the timing, but nothing exceptional. Though that's not taking into account potential efficiencies gained with unified shading (potentially better utilisation of resources), but also not accounting for potential loss of efficiency due to the move away from dedicated shaders.

I personally think that familiarity and extension of legacy is a key factor at launch.
I feel more excited about gotham 3 than any of the other games so far.

Halo 3 would go somewhere to helping this.

And i'm pretty sure 99% of ps2 fans will be spunking towards the Ps3 the SECOND GTa4, GT5, etc are announced....

i dunno, i AGREE in principal that new games are where it's at - but in terms of a launch hype creating exercise? You have to roll out the big guns..

Sony won't have anything near that big. I would expect possibly Gran Tourismo, Metal Gear, Resident Evil and Tekken demos at best. At the rate Ueda releases games, we won't see anything from the Ico developers for a long time. Soul Calibur 3 and Final Fantasy XII aren't even out yet, so nothing there either. I wouldn't be shocked to see a GTA for PS3 launch, but Rockstar keeps their GTA games under wraps until a few months before release. Gradius is such a niche franchise I don't think Sony would use it for their unveiling.
