Nope, lol.

To be fair, they did announce a bunch of new games, just nothing that exciting. Mario Tennis: Ultra Smash (Wii U), Animal Crossing: amiibo Festival (Wii U), Mario & Luigi: Paper Jam (3DS), Metroid Prime: Federation Force (3DS), Legend of Zelda: Triforce Heroes (3DS), and probably something else I'm forgetting. Lots of franchise spinoffs, nothing really new or "meaty".

Damn, that's a disappointment :(

Paper mario anyone??

why on earth would they taint the sacred paper mario by putting him in a mario & luigi alphadream game?????

I like the mario & luigi games, but paper mario does not fit in and seems incredibly lazy. Paper jam looks exactly like dream team.

I think it's safe to say that Nintendo's moved on to next gen internally, with Reggie basically admitting on screen that all the cool announcements are coming next year.

I think their showing was pretty underwhelming overall, but I'll probably end up enjoying a bunch of the games shown. Metroid Prime Federation Force in particular is giving me flashbacks to my reaction to Tropical Freeze, where I had a really negative kneejerk reaction to the announcement, but quickly came around to it after I had some time to think.

Nintendo really shouldn't have spread out their announcements so much, though. If stuff like Nindies@Home, Earthbound Beginnings, the Smash DLC, and even the eShop sales had actually been in the Digital Event, it likely would have been received better.

Muppets have a very distinct look that carries over into Sesame Street's puppets. These don't look anything like that.

I thought the puppets were kind of cringe-inducing. :/

They are actually made by the Jim Henson company as two of the non Nintendo puppets were from a TV show in the UK made by the same company called 'That Puppet Game Show'

Extremely well done!

yep, I knew smokin a bowl before the conference was a good idea

I came home from work today, ate a piece of my bang bar, and am watching the Nintendo Digital Event/going through this thread.

This shit is hilariously bad while super stoned. I can't imagine what most of not high gaf was thinking (and I'm just at the Star Fox puppets).

Some thoughts I posted in another thread:

I think Nintendo could’ve put on a better show had they not shown so much in advance.

The following is a scenario where Nintendo saved certain things for E3, and tweaked the way they presented other things:

+ Open with Star Fox Zero, but immediately say it’s a collaboration with Platinum Games. And say that the gameplay is the focus right now, targeting 60 fps (according to the IGN article), and the graphics will continue to improve until launch. Split the developer story between Miyamoto and Platinum.

+ Smash logo appears! In this scenario, Smash DLC was NOT shown early. Trailer plays for Roy. Sakurai appears onscreen and quickly explains Roy, and notes Roy and Lucas will be available after the Digital Event. He also quickly notes new stages and Mii Fighter outfits will be available, as well. And I mean quickly: Like all of the Mii Fighter outfits are shown onscreen at once, next to their franchise logos.

- Moving on: Explicit confirmation that The Legend of Zelda is still in the works for WiiU. In the meantime: A look at Triforce Heroes, with immediate confirmation that it has both single-player and online (something they took a while to say). Followed by Hyrule Warriors Legends, which in this scenario, wasn't leaked early by Koei-Tecmo.

- An unexpected bombshell (for English-speaking audiences): Mother 1, fully localized as EarthBound Beginnings, available on the WiiU eShop immediately after the Digital Event.

- Moving on: Metroid Prime: Federation Force, featuring Blast Ball, with the following statement upfront: “We continue to work on ideas for new Metroid games, both 2D and 3D. We hope to have something for you soon. In the meantime, enjoy this new concept inspired by the world of Metroid.”

- An unexpected announcement (for English-speaking audiences): Fatal Frame: Maiden of Black Water, which in this scenario has its localization confirmed at E3, rather than a prior Direct. Follow this up with a new look at Devil’s Third, which in this scenario, wasn't shown a few weeks earlier. And follow this up with Bravely Second End Layer, also saved for E3 in this scenario.

- Show off Shin Megami Tensei x Fire Emblem — in this scenario, for the first time. Yes, that means the earlier Direct would’ve been shorter, and yes, the audience reaction would still be mixed. But anything with “Atlus x Intelligent Systems” in the headline would garner interest. Also remember, for several years this game had borderline mythical status, where people weren’t sure it was still in development. It could’ve been a TLG-like payoff if saved for E3 — much smaller in scale, of course, but still buzz-worthy.

- Show off Fire Emblem Fates and confirm the two versions upfront. Not a plus for everyone but still a point of interest.

- Still on Japanese stuff: Yo-kai Watch coming to the west, Xenoblade Chronicles X this Christmas, etc. Show off Monster Hunter X — not sure if it’s confirmed for the West, but if this had been shown here instead of the earlier Direct, it would’ve made waves.

- Merge the Animal Crossing content into one smaller segment: Happy Home Designer, and on a side note, Animal Crossing Amiibo Festival, each with amiibo integration.

- Drastically shorten the Yoshi’s Wooly World segment. Save the developer story for a post-show YouTube release. For the Digital Event, simply have a trailer showing off a huge variety of levels in rapid succession.

- A short segment about Mario & Luigi: Paper Jam. A short segment about Mario Tennis Ultra Smash. The time saved here would help slot in the new additions like Fatal Frame and SMT x FE.

- Ditto for Super Mario Maker. They can have a bit of explanation, but save the philosophy by Shiggy and friends for another time. For the Digital Event, simply have a trailer showing off many crazy levels and enemy combinations.

- “One more thing.” This is where they close by showing Ryu in Smash, with a trailer and explanation. Also show off the accompanying stage, and say Ryu is available alongside Roy and Lucas right after the Digital Event. In this scenario, Nintendo actually managed to keep Ryu and Roy a secret.

Had Nintendo played their cards this way, I think the show would’ve gone a great deal better. Still not Sony level with the TLG/FFVII-R/S3 wombo combo, of course, but still buzz-worthy.

I could avatar quote you to convey my reaction but honestly the Star Fox puppets were the peak. It was a downhill mudslide in to a latrine full of liquid shit after that.

If Super Mario Maker was not shown off at the Nintendo World Championships, it would not have received the reception it has now.
I can agree with shuffling things around, but that should not have changed.

The Star Fox puppets were honestly the best part. You're going to be laughing and crying at some of the later shit.

Since today was pretty much only focused on Nintendo made games should I still be holding out the slimmest hopes for something, ANYTHING, 3DS Dragon Quest related in the coming days -_-?

Yeah that was disappointing but looking back I think it was also because of the pacing and including developer sections.

Now about that Metroid game, I think the hate comes from having no Retro Studios info on new game (Metroid, DKC or whatever). I am not including this as a negative.

+
Yoshi, Mario Maker, Xenoblade and Starfox Zero are solid releases IMO
3DS has a lot going (Hyrule Warriors, New Zelda, New FE, New Mario RPG)

-
Too much 3DS and no Wii U love.
They added a lot of Developer sections (leave that for later)
They should have added more for Wii U (indie reel, Fatal Frame and Devil's Third)
Xenoblade X date is disappointing
In the Direct Starfox looked bad graphically (looking at the treehouse footage in 60fps the game does look a lot better)
Just one surprise, Mario Tennis Ultra Smash (unfortunately does nothing for me)
No info on Zelda Wii U was a mistake

Some thoughts I posted in another thread:

I agree with you, save everything for the direct, specially if you have so little, and avoid the Dev segments in the direct, show them later, like last year.

Some small changes and this would have been a 6 or 7 out of 10, and not 4/10.

I'm really curious what the mood is going to be at the Best Buy Mario Maker demo tommorow? I wonder if people will say anything to the the Nintendo rep there? I'm just going to politely ask if he's heard anything about Devil's Third.

Also what happened to the seven button offer they had for preordering two select Nintendo games? It was there Saturday but has disappeared. The Canadian page says to check back tommorow for the list.

I was really hoping for Devil's Third having a release. I was going to order that and Xenoblade Chronicles X. Now I'll probably substitute Animal Crossing. Ironic for multiple reasons.

What can I say. It looks pretty neat.

On the Sony conference:

I'm glad this conference happened. I was waiting for Sony to step up their game and they delivered. That being said, I'm still giving this a 7/10. A solid performance all around though.

On the Nintendo direct:

It was a sold 7/10.

I don't get the hate in this thread. It's the E3 curse. If you don't "win", you're terrible and deserve to die and rot. How many fucking "NINTENDO NEEDS TO GO THIRD PARTY" thread bullshit will we have now?

Now, I understand that's your opinon and totally valid... but are you really surprised most people don't agree with your assessment here? If both of those conferences were "solid 7/10" for you, then you're simply out of touch with most people. Which is fine. I like plenty of things that a lot of people hate.

That Smash Direct, Roy & Ryu, Mother 1 announcement, Itoi's heart to heart message, Nintendo World Championships, and making Super Mario Maker turn from a "meh" game to a "must buy" in one sitting... that all made me happy and proud to be a Nintendo fan.

...I'm going to pretend that day was Nintendo's E3 showings and that this day didn't happen.

If Zelda U gets pushed to the NX... Nintendo you do NOT release a console without a main Zelda title, you don't do that. All well the Wii U has a great line-up of games, especially once Mario Maker and Xenoblade X join it. Sad Nintendo seems to really be dropping the support.

This was the best thing about the digital event.

So funny lol.

Yeah. I love the delayed reaction from Iwata!

Speaking of which, I was curious about the segment. I thought I recognized Bill Baretta's voice, but I thought maybe they're not actual Henson puppets but rather a decent facsimile like Crank Yankers or Avenue Q or something.

Did a Google search, apparently it a WAS by the Jim Henson company and directed by Brian Henson
http://www.toughpigs.com/henson-nintendo/

Not sure if worth a new thread but I thought it was worth posting.

I think people are focusing way to much on Nintendo having delivered a bad conference. What its far more important (and worries me far more tbh) is the fact that the outlook for the WiiU suddenly looks much, much worse.
I don't even mean sales wise, because I think it was already clear by now that nothing is gonna change significantly in that regard since most of the blockbusters have been out.
But I just can't remember a time or system where there was so little to
nothing to
look forward to, and thats just in the systems third year...
It was obvious that the WiiU is not gonna have a very long life span, but I at least expected something after the 3rd year of the system. Now all we have left are some B-tier games for early 2016 and Zelda WiiU, which I am more and more convinced is gonna get the TP treatment or skip the system entirely (maybe also because of technical issues?).

And even while the 3DS is getting a lot more announcements than I had been expecting (seems like Nintendo is really trying to stretch its lifespan - but looking at the sales numbers, largely in vain?) I think they're just overdoing it with milking franchises this generation. The 3DS will have had FIVE games from the Zelda universe: OOT 3D, LBTW, MM3D, HW3D and now the Tri Force Heroes. Plus the third Paper Mario for the system. Did anybody really ask for this? And then the Metroid game which looks like it shouldn't even remotely carry that name...

Iwata tweeting about taking the reaction serious seems off too. How could they not have anticipated these reactions from fans?

My thoughts:

LOVED the opening with the puppets and how they were transforming into Star Fox characters. Then Star Fox 0 was shown and though the graphics are whatever, the gameplay looks good and I'm really happy they are back with the original cast! None of that post Dinosaur Planet bs that started the downward spiral of the series.

Everything from there was downhill.

Only good points after that was a solid Xenoblade Chronicles X trailer and release date (though too far away), Mario Tennis was a nice surprise, new Mario RPG title is a nice surprise, and that's it.

Hyrule Warriors would've been a good surprise if it didn't leak before-hand and while Shin Megami x Fire Emblem looks good graphically, the premise is just way out there in deep otaku land.

Reading the moments of this thread when people saw Metroid and Animal Crossing Party for the first time is amazing. Their despair is palpable.

Puppets were great but really, developers having fun doesn't work so well when the rest of the event is devoid of any interesting content.

Great post, spot on. This event was badly received because of miscommunication, bad scheduling and pacing of both the video and reveals. If they crammed everything they revealed in June thus far it would have been much better, not really mind-blowing, but still pretty competent.

Even after this conference I'm still excited for the Wii U's future. Some good looking games coming out this year: Yoshi's Wooly World, Super Mario Maker, and Star Fox. Not really interested in Mario tennis though unless it has online.

Also, we have to remember Nintendo could just announce some new Wii U games next month in a direct. They've done that before.

Well, I have to say, I thought E3 was pretty incredible this year, and honestly I feel Nintendo did a nice job contributing to that awesome themselves. Sure it didn't have a megaton, and it was without Zelda Wii U, or the predicted Metroid or Animal Crossing entries people expected, but focusing on what was there and not what wasn't, I really want to play some of those games. 3DS having such a presence was a real suprise for me, but not a bad one: Triforce heroes, Happy Home Designer and Pokemon Super Mystery Dungeon will keep my household's' 3DS' in use this Fall, and I can't wait to ghet my hands on Federation Force. Not traditional Metroid of course but what it is looks great.

Star Fox, Mario Maker, Xenoblade & Amiibo Festival will give us plenty to play on Wii U as well. Bowser & DK will have me and my kid playing Skylanders through together this year too, I kind of thought Skylanders would be replaced by Lgo Dimensions in the house this year but I guess it's both. Nintendo honestly managed to make me excited for the fall and early next year without showing any more of their cards for beyond that. Between me, my partner and my boy, there is plenty coming for us all, on all formats, Nintendo and all the others. Good time to be a gamer.

I was literally shaking with anger during that conference. Tears formed in my eyes and my fists were clenched. "Announce something," I shrieked at my computer. My mom knocked on my bedroom door and had to ask if I was ok. Then, they started showing me a bunch of losers playing instruments dressed as Mario and I just turned it off. It was actually unbelievable.

Now, I'm 31 years old and this was, without a doubt, the worst conference I've ever seen in my life. It's clear that Nintendo is not just done with the Wii U but done with the company. There is no recovering from a conference that bad. They'll talk about the NX at next E3, but people will ignore it after remembering Blast Balls.

I loved this company and put my heart and soul into dedicating my gaming life to them. But now, I have nothing. I'm an empty shell.
lol this post is now in the news XD

They take their franchises and they make these announcements that would make any Nintendo fan mad. You could talk to a person about availability without them having any prior knowledge and they would get upset. I don't know if they should start thinking about firing someone, but the defense for their games is becoming a nightmare. They have 1 or 2 teams working on a game we all want and that's it.

Their defense is coming from this dream that no one outside their circle really seems to enjoy. I played SNES as a kid and I remember why I liked them so much and this is not it.

I think it's just because they're Nintendo that people honestly like what they're doing. The Treehouse and everything. I just think its not going the way it could possibly go. Maybe 1 or 2 franchises are, but it's just not why I liked them. They release games like their marketing team from the 90's made decisions.

I feel bad that everyone bought Amiibos instead of actual video games and it's just nothing I'm proud of. I'm not super excited, but I'll buy Zelda next year. There's a sale there.

Maybe someone does need to get let go from the company or step down. It happens far too often.

The video game championship benefits people who are there. It's a bad omen for some IMO.

I am completely surprised he/she had those high expectations. It was exceedingly unlikely that a Metroid game would be revealed for Wii U. If one was, it would be a 3DS title. Nintendo have shifted resources (which was evident before yesterday) to NX (console or handheld, semantics aside, I call it both).

This is not to say the conference was weak. Although it had a good humorous representation with the puppets, it had poor pacing with too much time spent on Yoshi Wooly World (a game releasing in 2 weeks for Europe and Japan), Skylanders (irrelevant PR interviews), a Super Mario montage video, and a weak selection of titles ( as expected from before E3 if you looked at Nintendo's developer's and the IGN/Gamespot schedule).

Perhaps because I had such low expectations knowing this information, only heightened slightly from the NWC on Sunday, I was not as disappointed. But this is not to say it was weak. It was.

I do agree with the author about the odd treatment of Metroid, against the wishes of what fans have been asking for ( amore traditional 2D Metroid), and odd treatment of Animal Crossing U. The latter, by speculation, was probably cut down from development of a traditional Animal Crossing but then were moved to NX as well. I have to read a bit more about the Metroid game.

This image shows how despite the Wii U having a lowsy appearance at this conference it still has a somewhat decent lineup for the rest of the year. Its definitely not "dead" in terms of software yet.

Yoshi's Wooly World, Starfox Zero, Mario Tennis, Super Mario Maker, Project Zero, & Xenoblade Chronicles X. Good amount of games I want to buy! More than XB1 and PS4 this year so far.
