Some thoughts I posted in another thread:

I think Nintendo could’ve put on a better show had they not shown so much in advance.

The following is a scenario where Nintendo saved certain things for E3, and tweaked the way they presented other things:

+ Open with Star Fox Zero, but immediately say it’s a collaboration with Platinum Games. And say that the gameplay is the focus right now, targeting 60 fps (according to the IGN article), and the graphics will continue to improve until launch. Split the developer story between Miyamoto and Platinum.

+ Smash logo appears! In this scenario, Smash DLC was NOT shown early. Trailer plays for Roy. Sakurai appears onscreen and quickly explains Roy, and notes Roy and Lucas will be available after the Digital Event. He also quickly notes new stages and Mii Fighter outfits will be available, as well. And I mean quickly: Like all of the Mii Fighter outfits are shown onscreen at once, next to their franchise logos.

- Moving on: Explicit confirmation that The Legend of Zelda is still in the works for WiiU. In the meantime: A look at Triforce Heroes, with immediate confirmation that it has both single-player and online (something they took a while to say). Followed by Hyrule Warriors Legends, which in this scenario, wasn't leaked early by Koei-Tecmo.

- An unexpected bombshell (for English-speaking audiences): Mother 1, fully localized as EarthBound Beginnings, available on the WiiU eShop immediately after the Digital Event.

- Moving on: Metroid Prime: Federation Force, featuring Blast Ball, with the following statement upfront: “We continue to work on ideas for new Metroid games, both 2D and 3D. We hope to have something for you soon. In the meantime, enjoy this new concept inspired by the world of Metroid.”

- An unexpected announcement (for English-speaking audiences): Fatal Frame: Maiden of Black Water, which in this scenario has its localization confirmed at E3, rather than a prior Direct. Follow this up with a new look at Devil’s Third, which in this scenario, wasn't shown a few weeks earlier. And follow this up with Bravely Second End Layer, also saved for E3 in this scenario.

- Show off Shin Megami Tensei x Fire Emblem — in this scenario, for the first time. Yes, that means the earlier Direct would’ve been shorter, and yes, the audience reaction would still be mixed. But anything with “Atlus x Intelligent Systems” in the headline would garner interest. Also remember, for several years this game had borderline mythical status, where people weren’t sure it was still in development. It could’ve been a TLG-like payoff if saved for E3 — much smaller in scale, of course, but still buzz-worthy.

- Show off Fire Emblem Fates and confirm the two versions upfront. Not a plus for everyone but still a point of interest.

- Still on Japanese stuff: Yo-kai Watch coming to the west, Xenoblade Chronicles X this Christmas, etc. Show off Monster Hunter X — not sure if it’s confirmed for the West, but if this had been shown here instead of the earlier Direct, it would’ve made waves.

- Merge the Animal Crossing content into one smaller segment: Happy Home Designer, and on a side note, Animal Crossing Amiibo Festival, each with amiibo integration.

- Drastically shorten the Yoshi’s Wooly World segment. Save the developer story for a post-show YouTube release. For the Digital Event, simply have a trailer showing off a huge variety of levels in rapid succession.

- A short segment about Mario & Luigi: Paper Jam. A short segment about Mario Tennis Ultra Smash. The time saved here would help slot in the new additions like Fatal Frame and SMT x FE.

- Ditto for Super Mario Maker. They can have a bit of explanation, but save the philosophy by Shiggy and friends for another time. For the Digital Event, simply have a trailer showing off many crazy levels and enemy combinations.

- “One more thing.” This is where they close by showing Ryu in Smash, with a trailer and explanation. Also show off the accompanying stage, and say Ryu is available alongside Roy and Lucas right after the Digital Event. In this scenario, Nintendo actually managed to keep Ryu and Roy a secret.

Had Nintendo played their cards this way, I think the show would’ve gone a great deal better. Still not Sony level with the TLG/FFVII-R/S3 wombo combo, of course, but still buzz-worthy.

Please apply for a job at Nintendo. For all of us.

I like you.

People bitching about Miyamoto and Tezuka sharing their design experience from the original Mario are missing the whole point of what makes Mario Maker what it is. So what if you've heard about the 1-1 start screen before, it's the very definition of elitism to flip them off because they're sharing this with all the audience.
But that isn't what people are complaining about, or at least it shouldn't be. What people are upset with are wishes being granted in the wrong way. When people asked for a new Metroid game they didn't want some coop shootfest with a weird multiplayer. When people asked for a new Animal Crossing they didn't want a Mario Party clone with mandatory amiibo. When people asked for a new Paper Mario they wanted one on the Wii U and not one mixed with yet another Mario and Luigi handheld game after the last one didn't do so well. Retro was active on Twitter prior to E3 so everyone expected an announcement, that one is their fault only.

Nintendo simply announced their lineup too early. Had they waited to announce Star Fox this year, we would be seeing much different reactions. Imagine if we knew nothing about the title coming into E3 and Nintendo opened their direct by saying for the first time ever that Miyamoto is working with Platinum on a Star Fox game that's releasing later this year. GAF would have crashed. Yoshi and XCX were both announced in January 2013 and have appeared at almost every show since then. People are getting tired of them.

If you're wondering why I'm down on Nintendo for announcing games too early but not Sony, Sony has a combination of many first and third party games to show at every conference. I'm pretty certain FF7 will miss next E3 but we'll see more after. The difference is Sony announced the games early but they're not going to keep showing them at every event like Nintendo did with their games. The only exception has been The Order (and Uncharted 4 in a way)

So funny lol.
I see a "Meanwhile at Nintendo" caption in this GIF's future.

I for one do not blame Nintendo for moving on.

They made sure all titles on the U from their part are quality and move new development into their future platforms. The WiiU bombed worldwide and still got a fairly decent quantity of great games. Limited choice, but quality and exclusive.

They have the mobile stuff, QoL and the NX coming and they need te ensure not to make the same mistakes as they did with the 3DS and WiiU. And for that, I am grateful they seem to be going full gear into their future endevours. Nintendo is not doomed at all, but they do need to move on from products that failed to reach potential or are losing relevance. And that is exactly what they are doing.

They're not doomed, but they're going to have to really nail something with NX. As I said before, we are back in the territory Nintendo was in mid-way through the GameCube lifespan when they realized they weren't making any user base gains, only far worse.

Again, it's an "evolve or die" moment for them.

Reggie is fucking poison

Nintendo needs to embrace their inner otaku more

They need to embrace a community that would want to come back to them, more than anything, and Reggie ain't going to cut it anymore.
Trying to make Reggie into a new Howard Lincoln with a modern edge hasn't been working for them.

Reggie and Iwata need to take the Yamauchi and Arakawa approach and work from the background, while letting someone else be the public face of the company in Japan and the Americas. Back in the day, Lincoln was able to be that person along with Ken Lobb and Perrin Kaplan. Nintendo needs that consumer-facing voice again.

So my proposal is hiring a front-man, someone who can act as a community manager, who is legitimately charming and charismatic, to be their public face.

And most importantly, Scott Moffitt needs to be put out to pasture.

Nintendo announced Yarn Yoshi in January 2013 and didn't show it again until E3 2014. Nintendo announced FE x SMT in January 2013 and didn't show it again until April (?) 2015. Nintendo didn't announce games early in this E3 or have shown more of the already announced Zelda U, which is basically the whole reason, people are mad.

I think Bill Trinnen could be that man. Actually, Reggie didn't appear in the past two normal Directs, while Bill did. Maybe they're sort-of-already doing it?

Feels like we're in the "Twilight Princess and Super Paper Mario delayed to Wii" era right now.

I got a little less grumpy about the Direct after thinking about the Holiday 2015 lineup. Mario Maker, Yoshi, Xenoblade, and Star Fox is actually a really good fall release for a first-party developer. I am perfectly fine with that being their fall schedule.

It's just facing the grim reality that 2015 is basically it. A lot of the 2016 games just feel like spin-offs, sequels, and quirky twists to kinda fill out the Q1 and Q2 schedule. I hope these games turn out better than they look, but they make me kinda nervous. Feels like they're going in directions with franchises (Zelda, Metroid, Animal Crossing) where I don't want to follow them. I think Splatoon and Smash Bros. bringing the fun last year spoiled me a little.

I'm selling my Wii U.

This conference had nothing for me.

I really thought with no Zelda U, Nintendo would be dropping bombs. But nothing new interested me (or was a 3ds game), and Starfox looked pretty bad.

I really love the Wii U games I own, but I have completed them all, and I haven't turned the console on in months.

That Animal Crossing cocktease literally crushed my soul. The moment I saw Isabelle come out I thought that this was the big reveal of Nintendo's E3. Then came the board gameplay and I died a little inside.

Xenoblade X?

In other news, I don't get why people think the puppets/skits are weird.... They're awesome, entertaining, original... and so much better than a press conference.

I was hoping for some good stuff, but I bought my Wii U for Xenoblade, Smash, and Mario Kart. That's all I'm getting so far... maybe Mario Maker... but that's good enough for me. Would have been nice to see a Mario Strikers, or for Star Fox to actually be as good as Assault and improve on that, instead of taking a step back to just a regualr shooter.

I was disgusted by Metroid, but I got angry at Animal Crossing amiibo Festival. I didn't think I would get angry over Animal Crossing, but I did. So yeah, Wii U is dead, their software lineup is toast. Star Fox as their main "core" game isn't going to help them at all. Mario Maker is coming far too early for the holidays, I feel to be a main player longterm for them.

With NX, they need to cut a lot of the bullshit out. No naming/numbering shenanigans. No tablet screens, no pretending what you have and what you don't, no focusing on low wattage at the detriment of everything else, etc. They can't be all fun and games and be Mr. oblivious if they want to get back into the game. Playing the fool only hurts yourself. If NX is some kind of iOS system where the OS matters more than the hardware, then the controls will probably be unified, meaning no pointer controls, gyro/tilt will be in, hopefully some kind of analog triggers, etc. With Wii, it felt like they had a plan and believed in it. With Wii U and 3DS, it felt like they knew better than you but missed the last 4 years of reality.

Legitimately, I feel like Nintendo lost me today. The brands I wanted, but the games/genres I don't. It felt like they were out of touch with what I wanted from them, and that saddens me.

Yeah. What's strange is that, actually, from September to December, Wii U will receive a good amount of first party games. That's good, pretty good. But most of that is made by already known games and, above all, they showed nothing for 2016, while they did for 3DS.

As a wii u owner. It sort of felt like the console is on its way out. Really depressing considering how awesome it was last year.

It just gave me that death vibe. If Zelda is also a NX launch title then they might as well call it a day. I wont settle for playing the inferior version.

Well, that was shit. Like, it fell short of my already low than my low expectations. Starfox looked meh. Nothing else to really talk about, the whole puppet shit was not for me, no Metroid surprise (the only hopeful thing I had in mind), yep no console Zelda as promised.

Celebrating Mario too much as usual. Super Mario Maker does look good though, but it's more of a platform than a game IMO, it will be on their next handheld or console for sure.

So you would rather Nintendo rehash the same three franchises and let them die then see new interesting ip. The character you're playing as is more important to you than the gameplay?

I think he's talking about the typical Zelda, 3D Mario, metroid gameplay.

I'm conflicted. They cannot produce the same games over and over, of course, but it's damn well important to keep existing fans happy. Lurching between new gameplay types and franchises...

It's like, how are you going to form player loyalty like that? 3D Mario and Zelda are two games I can bet on but that's about it - I can't even bet on how they will play and maybe that's a little bit of a problem.

I see it like this. An established franchise should change a little between each iteration. Essentially safe changes unless we're talking big problems already in the game. Keep people happy and yadda yadda yadda. Obviously you can't run a console on slightly changed games alone, so then in addition to this, you have new IPs pioneering fresh gameplay concepts. If one of them is a hit, you add it to the established franchise pile and you keep on trucking.

Nintendo has other problems in addition to all of this, but franchise management seems to be one of them. I guess you could jump down my throat and say armchair businessman, but I dunno, this style of IP management seems to be working well for the other console vendors, other publishers.

In any case, tomorrow I sell my Wii U and my 3DS. As a consumer, the lurching between famine and feast with respect to release line-ups, and constant questioning over whether the newest iteration of Zelda or whatever will play in the style of game that I enjoyed before is tiresome. Nintendo have lost me through a decade of fetishising innovation at the cost of everything - it's really just too much effort to own their consoles these days.

Trinen is a nice fella, but no. I'm talking something closer to a Major Nelson figure, someone that interfaces more directly with the public and can also function as a mouthpiece.

This post inspired me to make this gif:

Would be perfect if someone can edit in retro studios logo as clint's head, neogaf logo as ''the ugly's head, and a wiiU as a head on the man rolling in the grave, and maybe a sign instead of the hat, saying RIP wiiu 2012-2015. My editing skills are beyond horrible

Perfect gif! lol!!

I just realised. Did Nintendo really announce another Mario Tennis?!? For hell sakes Nintendo at least make a mario sport game based on superior sports like volleyball or another Mario Strikers.

People keep saying Muppets but I strongly believe the folks behind Crank Yankers might be the ones who did the puppets and motions for them. Looks unmistakable.

Soo... People keep asking but I haven't really found a clear answer. Round-table tonight or no?

It wasn't an exciting event (although the puppets were really fun), but we got what the told us we'd get: a focus on the upcoming games for this year.
That meant very little surprises, but it also meant we're seeing games we're actually going to play soonish instead of mostly CGI trailers or games we're only playing in 2016.

Both 3DS and Wii U have a really good lineup for the rest of the year and in the days surrounding E3 we've been getting plenty of news like the ones in the Mini Direct, Ryu and Roy in Smash, Mother 1 localization, lots of indie demos on the eShop, plenty of gameplay footage and dev comentary.

This doesn't fit with the hype machine of course, one that thrives on bombastic announcements, cinematic trailers, hyperbole (both positive and negative) and there were certainly stinkers (MP: Federation Force looks fun, but the art style is severely lacking and Animal Crossing Amiibo whatever is... yeah...), but to me at the end of the day, what matters is that I saw plenty of games I'm going to play and most likely enjoy in the next 6 months. I like that.

Oh, and almost every game having gameplay rather than a CGI trailer was also great. A bit of a chat about the games development after each one was nice too.

I think you've played Wii U for too long that you think in-game footage shown at all the other conferences is CGI. That's just what graphics look like nowadays :)

Sony and Microsoft had few CGI trailers. Namely just the 2017 titles were CG trailers like FF7:R.

I am not up to speed on Nintendo E3 announcements. The fact the puppets to some were best part of show and they are repeatedly shown vs any game play on this page, well it's interesting.

Now I hope Nintendo comes out swinging next year. Competition is good.

Hype will get me to buy Mario Maker but Devils 3rd and Fatal Frame are the only games still coming to the System I have interest in.

Did we get a PAL release date for Fatal Frame?

I missed the Nintendo event, I was expecting to come back to a bunch of threads on huge reveals but I couldn't find a single Nintendo thread on the front page. Was it THAT bad??

Did they even show The Legend of Zelda for Wii U?

Nope, lol.

To be fair, they did announce a bunch of new games, just nothing that exciting. Mario Tennis: Ultra Smash (Wii U), Animal Crossing: amiibo Festival (Wii U), Mario & Luigi: Paper Jam (3DS), Metroid Prime: Federation Force (3DS), Legend of Zelda: Triforce Heroes (3DS), and probably something else I'm forgetting. Lots of franchise spinoffs, nothing really new or "meaty".
