E3 Registration Now Open

Someone needs to help out Wario 64. He's helped everyone here so many times on games.

Maybe we could all pitch in and buy him one?

It stinks that I'll be turning 18 one month after E3 2006. :(
I don't know about recent E3's but from 1997 - 2000 they didn't give a shit what age you were. Sure they say they do but I never got carded when I was 14. It was easy as hell to get in, have badge will travel so they say.

Doing a DBA is much cheaper than purchasing a ticket.

so I've yet to get a "standard" explaination as to what exactly is require to get in... Besides money and way to get there, what exactly qualifies as "credentials", and what doesn't?
edit: and yes, i see the "industry identification" on the website, but i mean more specifically, what companies satisfy this, etc.

Haha thanks, but even with a badge I'm not even sure if I'll have the week available to go to the event, let alone the cash for the trip

Should be on the site. W-2 Form, Company credit card, Pay check stub, and more. You have to have two or more.

How far away do you live?

And to get in... You just have to work at a video game related store. Hell, these guys who run a comic book shop near me went to E3 because it's called, "JP Games & Comics."

On a related note ... those planning on attending GDC next year should note that Thursday is the deadline for "early bird" registration.

ah see thats more what i was talking about. what qualifies as "good enough" to get in? just any random store that sells videogames is good enough?

Yeah. I got in because of Best Buy last year, and I was working in inventory.

*sigh* I'd like to get in as press too...

Still was a LOT of fun by myself last year though, constantly going between the East and West halls. Great, great times.

Were you at the GAF meetup this year? PM me about press stuff.

Wario64 -- you're in the Bay area? If you end up getting to e3 this year and interested in driving down, let me know. I'm over in Sacramento.

Quick DBA Primer:

D.B.A. or more commonly known as "Doing Business As" is a method for an individual to conduct business under an assumed name. Not only is this an extremely cheap method to create a proper business but it also allows you to assume a fictitious name for your business. This fictitious name is not copyrighted however so if another company applies for that name you're kinda screwed.

In most states, you go to the county clerk's office at the nearest county courthouse and tell them you want to register a business name. Each state charges differently for a DBA, some are as cheap as $20 and as expensive as $200 (or more I've been told). For reference Florida was only $50.

Here is the official Florida online form for filing for a DBA. While I didn't do it online, it's pretty much the same.
https://efile.sunbiz.org/corpweb/efiling/FICREG01.html

Here are a couple of online website that will allows you to easily create a DBA. However it's much cheaper to do it yourself.

Personal Notes:
This is the best method to go about it, to my knowledge, if you don't work in retail or anything related to the games industry. Unfortunately while you do get to go into E3 for free it's simply not as cool as the Press pass. Fortunately I think I'll be able to snag one this year, if not I can always rely on my badge.

You guys are lucky, I live on the opposite side of the country. Plane ticket is going to be a pain ugh not to mention the hotel and transportation costs. I'm definitely going to try to see if I can join up any GA get togethers so we can share the price of a hotel room. I miss E3 Atlanta, it was so cheap for me hee hee.

Too bad this isn't in San Francisco like GDC. I know so many people in San Fran that staying there is free and I don't have to deal with hotel food :)

...Oh yeah.

Well, a quick search found a round trip flight departing May 17 and returning May 21 would be $166...

Driving would probably be the same after gas. :lol :(

I think there's a slim chance I'm going to make it to this one. I'm rather certain that all of my finals will be in that week. If finals are the following week, then I will praise the holy spirits of the gaming realm. If not, then I shall call for a jihad against IDSA.

I wish KB Toys was enough to get me in...we sell video games. :(

If I don't end up going with my friend (press passes plus he has a house near LA) I definitely want to see if I can join up with some of you GA guys so we can share a hotel room, etc. I'm not missing out on this year's event!

Whaa? It is. I see people from crap K-Mart and Wal-Mart *all* the time!

Yeah I've been told that E3's recently are filled to the brim of videogame fans that have found that simply working at a store or filing for a DBA is enough to get in. It's also been getting horrible busy and overcrowded.

Now I hate saying this, as the crowds from gaming stores do annoy me, but aren't gaming store employees precisely who the major companies WANT to be at e3? Namco, Square, Nintendo, Sony, etc.. don't care about publishers picking them up, but I can see them being very interested in getting the folks who actually sell games to consumers zealously behind their products.

That's true, I'd imagine they are loving that aspect of it. I'm rather sure E3 has been about a huge show for the media so those in journalistic command can express their excitement from E3. Then again the people who work at stores and help customers out by giving opinions and suggestions probably hold some serious marketing weight these days.

I'm going to try and get in as a broadcast journalist. Driver's license and a company letter are easy, all I need is a business card.

What happened to the early registration emails? :/

Went out about the 18/19th last year. Already contacted them about this. The lady said she didn't know if they were doing them this year again. Guess we'll see in a week or two.

Good luck trying to find a place to stay this year especially, because E3 pretty much reserved ALL the hotels in the downtown area for the exhibitors and staff.

Eh. I stay in Anaheim and drive up. Much better prices on hotels, and within walking distance of Disneyland.

I got this reply when I asked about the Alumni program

I have that question out to show management. Last year they did the Alumni
email blast around Dec 18th.

I would hold off another week and see what they say. I will try to
remember to email you back, but if you don't hear from me please ask
again.

Didnt get a reply yet. I will check with them at the end of the week again.

Yeah, I hope they send out the Alumni info soon. The Alumni was really easy to register with last year, except my company name had a typo in it so I had to call them up 3 or 4 times to get a confirmation and everything.

Then it was all nullified when I got a media pass on the 2nd day from a friend.

This'll be my 6th time. It's becoming old "HAT" now. ;) (Get it? Because I always wear that green hat!)
