I don't understand how this has confused so many people.

It's really simple. By canceling the normal press conference, the implication is that they don't have content worth announcing at a normal press conference.
It doesn't matter if they do or not. The perception will be negative.

What I gather from this is that there are far too many people that think E3 basically only means the annual conferences from the big three and nothing else, they don't get that it's an event were publishers release info about their upcoming games as well as allow the press to preview them.

This. The best part of e3 for me really isn't even the conference. It's Gamespot's Live shows. 3 days of showing games being played live, interviewing developers, and walking around the show floor talking about the games. That's pretty much the only time I go on Gamespot's site during the year. They have the best e3 coverage IMO.

It was totally unnecessary that they had to tweet that out. Just because people have horrible reading comprehension. Nintendo spelled out their plans in a very clear manner. It's not their fault some people can't read.

Well I am not sure about this whole "afraid" thing. But Nintendo, the company is not cowering under it's blankets as the big bad Sony/MS duo kick down the door. It'll be fine lol, games will be previewed and shown, rumors will pop up, same as it was.
There are some people that think that E3 is just the pre-E3 press conferences. Yes, even though it's right in the name, "Pre-E3", but as soon as the last of the big three's conferences is over, people think E3 is done, ignoring that there are still three days left for the conference.

I like where Nintendo is going with this. They're creating their own world, with miiverse and the ND's.
They are really making the Nintendo brand an entity that stands out from the norm. Whether this works out for them or not, time will tell.
