EA DICE withdrew nearly every official server from BF3 (PS360)

EA hasn't done this with a single game yet.

The only BF to be shut down is Battlefield 2: Modern Combat (360) and that was shut down due to lack of active players.
Well, they do it with their racing and sports games. And recently all the Hasbro games.

No reason they can't start with the BF account servers!

I can't believe how many people jumped at the chance to pay EA even more. I mean, what's the advantage of your own server? So you can choose how many tickets to play to? Big fucking deal.

People are idiots. I don't usually like to generalise about shit like this, but really, paying a subscription, just so you can tweak a few extra options? My lord.

And this will now be EA's model, charge for game, charge for servers, offer people to pay for their own servers, close already bought and paid for servers. It's fucking disgusting.

Is there any point in buying BF3 for PC when MOH comes out? I have no interest in MOH but I don't trust EA to keep BF3 up for much longer either.

This is why I skipped getting it on 360 (after playing a bunch of BC2) because after seeing how they supported BC2, I already knew something like this would be coming for BF3 360. Didn't want to spend the money on a game to have it poorly supported 6 months later.

EA hasn't done this with a single game yet.
Seriously? You do believe EA has never shut down the online service for a game in favor of its sequel ?

That's 67 games.

Ever since EA introduced the new servers my game time with BF has dropped 100%. I just don't play it anymore, I don't want to be on a map with a ridiculous high number of tickets, spending an hour on a map.

Cannot believe how quick they have been to ruin this game

That's 67 games.

That no one was playing. Didn't they state that the last batch accounted for less then 1%? I don't know how many times I've said this but, they won't shut down servers with an even small community. The servers BF2142 demo, a demo for a 6 year old game, was only shut down a few months ago...

Dude, if you need to convince someone that EA have fucked up practices regarding online games, the chances are that person is being wilfully ignorant. Save your energy for better things.
Or they simply go above the irrational "Haha lol Fuck you EA!1" attitude. Seriously guys, what exactly do you expect? For them to just keep adding and adding and adding and adding new server for every single game they release without ever shutting them down? It is literally impossible. Not only because of maintenance costs, which lets face it, having them for a game where barely 2 people a week play makes no sense, but because of actual physical space. So they either, a) stop making games (not happening), b) they shut them down based on certain amount of time (worst of three options) or c) they shut them based on how many people use them, or not use them.

Can't you see the server options before joining them? How hard is it to filter a game?

Sorry but you are the one being the idiot here. Paying for dedicated servers is something that has been happening for decades, it's not just something EA came up with... And It's not just about choosing how many tickets...

Or they could have done what literally everybody else did and let MS / Sony handle that shit. Of course, then they wouldn't be able to market to you directly or claim you as an Origin user when they're fellating shareholders. That'd never do.

The maintenance / physical space costs are so negligible as to be irrelevant. Besides, aren't those costs offset by the online pass?

EA's record speaks for itself. Feel free to keep supporting them though, I'm sure they'll reward y'all eventually.

Well, I very much prefer the dedicated server approach as opposed to the P2P we mainly see on consoles.

And btw most of those games listed didn't have a Online Pass, but tbh, Online Pass for covering maintenance is just BS PR, it exists to get something of used copies, simple as that.

Oh and physical space costs are most definitively NOT negligible. If they had simple kept all the servers as people suggested they should they'd probably need a new HQ by now.

So it is super hard to just find normal, default setting matches now?
No.

Do you think we can have an EA cycle?. Like the Sonic cycle but for EA practices. I can't believe EA think as short term as they do, Valve thought long term and with good business practices they cornered the PC download market, Origin will never take of as a result of this shit. I know EA have a kill switch on not only the online component, but also offline games and it makes me extremely reticent to buy their games and I am not the only one.

Sorry but you are the one being the idiot here. Paying for dedicated servers is something that has been happening for decades, it's not just something EA came up with... And It's not just about choosing how many tickets...
Can I hazard a guess that you rented a server? And yeah, there is more to it than setting the number of tickets, but not much. You can already choose your map and mode, plenty for me. But you now have to find one that isn't set to 3000 tickets, and isn't modded by some dickhead who boots you at the end of the game for no reason.

EA was paid by every gamer who owns BF3 to run and moderate the experience. They then offered the chance to rent your own server, which is fine for those willing to pay. But to then say, "fuck it, you guys seem to be running it OK, were off. Thanks for extra tenner by the way! Fucking mugs." It's a slap in the face. And the worst part is, gamers handed them the glove to do it. They now know it works, and will pull the same shit with every release.

Same with me.

Seems to me EA's strategy is to get you to purchase their game, and then get you OFF their servers as soon as possible. That's another bonus for them with the online pass, because they have fewer people playing since they're cutting out second hand buyers. Once those numbers dwindle, they shut the server down.

This is a whole new part of that strategy, where they start forcing you to rent a server, which should ensure a faster death for BF3 online. Then they herd you over to Medal of Honor, which will of course meet the same fate.

I mean, what more can EA do to show their complete disdain for consumers? I'm beyond done with EA. If it's some single player game I absolutely want to play I'll buy it used. As for my copy of BF3, I'll be trading it in today. I'll never buy another Battlefield game again, and they can stick Medal of Honor up their ass as wel.

Stop going DOOM & GLOOM

If you buy the game Online is still available, will be available for a long time

What EA/DICE have done is take there own server farms and lease them out
Make free money when there is demand for it, if population for the game dies out, and EA/DICE don't reintroduce those same server farms, then you can bitch

Only thing that is gonna be missing from the "Official" EA/DICE servers is the basic requirements, of 100 Tickets/Time/Balance, all server features at their minimum requirements

Most servers that run through Private are still ranked, but the specifics are skewed higher for longer battles, and more fun (to me that is)

I play on a server that is Pure Metro 24/7, 300-500 Tickets, Kills Galore, so much fucking fun
How about a server dedicated to only the B2K maps, and nothing else

If you think you got ideas, and you can rent out your own server, hell most games don't offer that feature

they were paid to get rid off the cheaters, not to moderate the experience, lol. May be console gamers are delusional like that but no PC gamer expects from a company to "moderate the experience" by providing the official servers. Nobody plays on official servers (if only by accident) since the release of Quake 1 which didn't even have any official servers but was doing just fine.

It's fascinating to watch how people rage about established practices. I just don't get it. Configure server filters, favourite some of them and just have fun!

That tickets thing is actually super annoying. I absolutely hate joining servers with 200-300% more tickets. The only good thing to come out of this whole rent-a-server thing are the servers that rotate TDM/Rush/Conquest every other map. But I'll enjoy and play this game on another suckers expense... No way I'll ever rent one myself.

Wait, wait, the online pass is "to get rid off [sic] cheaters"? Wow, that's a new one. It's fascinating to see people just flat out make shit up.

Also, even if that were true, surely part of moderating is getting rid of cheaters. Yet you seem to suggest that they don't get paid to moderate, they get paid to stop cheaters. What?

So it is super hard to just find normal, default setting matches now?

yes. this is the problem right here.

1. their search sucks.

it takes a FAQ and a tedious amount of work to find an official server.

2. their server filter sucks.

there is no way to tell the ticket count before joining a game.

3. quick match sucks.

quick match just drops you into any random server regardless of settings

all these things combined make it a pain for the average person to find a normal game with regular settings. it's not a problem for me since i have friends who rented servers JUST SO THEY COULD MAKE THEM NORMAL SETTINGS because that's what they wanted to play.

Seriously, stop trying to make make sense. All you'll get here is "Fu(k EA", "EA sucks", and "EA hates consumers"....

I still play BF3 and can still find a game easily. I'll buy Medal of Honor with no issues, or any other EA game with online modes with no reservations at all.....

I haven't rented a server even once. But I have played on rented servers for ages, all the way back to Quake 2.

EA was paid by every gamer who owns BF3 to run and moderate the experience. They then offered the chance to rent your own server, which is fine for those willing to pay. As DICE have stated they only did this because of the amount of people that rented servers, they ended up having to rent their own official servers, but there's absolutely no reason to think they won't simply turn them back on once they're freed up again.

Is this really how it works on consoles? On PC you can filter anything, and Quick Match follows your filters.

Really hard to feel sympathy for Origin users at this point. They clearly have nothin more to look forward to than getting violated repeatedly by EA. Vote with your wallets, people

This is more of a problem for console users, you know, those that don't actually use Origin. But good on you to try and bring something else EA to bitch about on this thread.

Is there a limit on how many servers they can have? Honest question. Seems a little convenient to say, "we'll put the official ones back up when there is space." I want to play on the official ones! You know, the ones I paid my online pass for!

yes. this is the problem right here.

1. their search sucks.

it takes a FAQ and a tedious amount of work to find an official server.

I understand, but it took me 5 minutes to learn the run around required.
I just add the good "Official" Servers that are always populated as "Favorites"... NO MORE CHAOS... Crazy Notion I know, if you don't use it whose fault is that

2. their server filter sucks.

there is no way to tell the ticket count before joining a game.

Umm... join server, all the information is right there in front of you, you don't get added into server ASAP, you get to see the requirements, not a companies fault you can't read the little description box letting you know what the rule set for this server is

3. quick match sucks.

quick match just drops you into any random server regardless of settings

That is the whole reason for QM, just get into something. Random Choice, go ahead game pick for me and there's still 2 options to let you pick mode + map preference

all these things combined make it a pain for the average person to find a normal game with regular settings. it's not a problem for me since i have friends who rented servers JUST SO THEY COULD MAKE THEM NORMAL SETTINGS because that's what they wanted to play.

Average person is doing fine, most of the people bitching in here are just EA Haters, or OG BF players who always think their way or the Tehran Highway

75% of the time anytime I join BF3 through search, I always find something I want to play
All this variety by people creating new ways to play the game
Some of you want Vanilla, cool, there isn't 100% black out on those games
There's a reason EA/DICE stopped doing them, you can't just EA being EA, and I'm one those players that really doesn't like EA, but most of this thread is uncalled for

Put your Fire & Pitchforks down, nothing controversial going on

They're are also a fucking business, if there is money to be made and people are offering "Shut Up and Take It", should EA go: "No, we are above this, Pure Vanilla or Bust!, Variety/Choices, Who the Fuck wants that?"... amirite?

I've been playing BF3 quite a lot after the server rental update and have had a much better experience than when it was official servers only. It's not like I'm renting a server myself and I haven't run into any 'mini-hitlers' as some gaffers so eloquently put it. Most servers only threaten to kick people if they glitch or just ram people in jets, which I believe is far.

*shrug*

^Yeah, I never have a problem finding a game that's 'normal.' Server search settings seem fine. Trying to even join a game post-this was impossible.

Wait, wait, the online pass is "to get rid off [sic] cheaters"? Wow, that's a new one. It's fascinating to see people just flat out make shit up.

what online pass? I heard that online pass is used by them to as an excuse for server costs, not moderating anything. I don't play on consoles so I don't have to deal with online pass and shit like that, I might be out of loop on that. And stopping cheaters is stopping cheaters. And I don't even see what kind of "moderating" can be done by a publisher online. What do you mean by that? Banning those who makes mods like Bioware does? They can shove this kind of moderating up their ass.

edit: lol it seems that DICE's shitty server browser has migrated to consoles. My condolences, guys, I feel your pain now and understand why you rage.

Is there a limit on how many servers they can have? Honest question. Seems a little convenient to say, "we'll put the official ones back up when there is space." I want to play on the official ones! You know, the ones I paid my online pass for!

I'd understand your reasoning if you actually couldn't find right now any servers with the same settings, and considering they on the same location, with the same ping. I seriously doubt this is the truth, so as a gamer, what's the difference? But since I only have the PC version I can only speak for that version.

As for your first question, server clusters aren't exactly something that take little space, they need a big, refrigerated room, and the space is limited. For example this is Polyphony Digital's server room.
polyphony-digital-servers-2.jpg

And this with GT5 being their first online game, and I believe it was taken before the game even released. They now have a different building for all their online stuff.

edit: lol it seems that DICE's shitty server browser has migrated to consoles. My condolences, guys, I feel your pain now and understand why you rage.

I have no problems with it. It's fast and responsive, and gets the job done. + Background loading is a bonus.

UR DOIN IT RITE.jpg

People are completely stupid when they are using a server browser it seems. Alan Kertz seems to be right. *sigh*

"DICE," "EA," "P" USE THEM! >_<

and this is why matchmaking should only find official servers... you shouldn't need a FAQ to be able to find a server to play on default settings.

joke post?

#1 reason people need admin controls on PC is to deal with cheaters running around with their aimbots and wallhacks and other stuff that is a constant battle on PC, but doesn't normally happen on consoles.

established practices from BF2:MC, BF:BC, BF1943 and BF:BC2 is official servers with official settings. and the game is balanced for official settings, Rush on anything but 100% tickets is a joke.

I don't understand why people keep bringing up server shut downs for other games. I understand EA tends to shut down servers for their other franchises, but there is no reason to believe this applies to BF games. You could still play BC1 if you wanted and Modern Combat was just shut down this year IIRC. So EA's habit of shutting down servers doesn't really apply here.

That said, I still think it's horrible what they've done with the servers in BF3. I think renting out servers is a great idea, I've thought about doing it for a while to test it out. However it truly is nearly impossible, if not completely impossible, to find an official EA/DICE server these days which is a shame since most custom servers have stupid settings or map/game type rotations.

What DICE really needs to do, and should have done in the first place, is fix and expand the broken search filter. I don't know about the PC or PS3, but it does not seem to work on the 360. You say you only want to play Rush, but your results will be populated by CQ games as well for example. It doesn't look like the filter system takes custom servers into account or is just unable to at this point. When introducing this level of customization into the game servers, how players navigate and find their games of choice should have really been one of the top priorities.

Is this really how it works on consoles? On PC you can filter anything, and Quick Match follows your filters.

QUick Match on Console lets you filter by map and mode, nothing else.

I understand, but it took me 5 minutes to learn the run around required.
I just add the good "Official" Servers that are always populated as "Favorites"... NO MORE CHAOS... Crazy Notion I know, if you don't use it whose fault is that
the problem is not everyone knows how to do that, which makes servers less populated than before they changed the game. who's fault is that?

Umm... join server, all the information is right there in front of you, you don't get added into server ASAP, you get to see the requirements, not a companies fault you can't read the little description box letting you know what the rule set for this server is

would LOOOOVE to see where ticket count is listed. HAVE YOU EVEN PLAYED THIS GAME!?!?

That is the whole reason for QM, just get into something. Random Choice, go ahead game pick for me and there's still 2 options to let you pick mode + map preference
but it was never random choice, it was always normal mode, normal rules, normal tickets, normal map rotation. until things changed!

way to go with the hyperbole... i list pretty reasonable claims in a reasonable fashion and you're talking about pitchforks and EA haters?

well, i just did a search for -[DICE]- on 360

101 results

0 DICE servers

101 player controlled servers

also, the actual DICE servers that i had in my favorites are no longer there.

#1 reason people need admin controls on PC is to deal with cheaters running around with their aimbots and wallhacks and other stuff that is a constant battle on PC, but doesn't normally happen on consoles.

admins aren't present 24/7. They can ban people but I expect the developer to be the one who deals with cheaters with admins catching those who somehow broke the anti-cheat system the developer uses.

and I thought that hacks are present on consoles too, aren't they? COD games have plenty of them.

but in BF on consoles (atleast on PS3) They ban good players

Why is is news NOW? Servers were pulled weeks ago, the day I fully stopped playing BF3. I have a friend who still has not gave up, he had a funny night last week: he went on a nemesis streak against someone. It turned out that he was the admin, so he made my friend getting killed constantly. Like hitting a button: "you were killed by ADMIN", randomly. Even better, we had a match where we were leading by 400 ticket - then the admin decided to flip the teams to not be on the losing team.

They literally killed the game. They have started with the Karkand patch which gave so much power to the helis that they totally ruined the vehicle oriented maps and now this. Well, thank you, that was enough for me to get back to BC2 Vietnam, which is still a far superior game for me.

I can not wait what are they going to do badly with their next Battlefield. There is always something. I think that's their best trait.

Vietnam with the paper helis?

and the DICE servers were definitely around 2 weeks ago, though there weren't as many as before...

Happens on the 360 as well. I was dominating the sky in a jet and I got booted and banned from the server all at once. I admit that I accidentally shot down an enemy jet as it was taking off, but that was only once and happened a good long time before I was booted.

I understand, but it took me 5 minutes to learn the run around required.
I just add the good "Official" Servers that are always populated as "Favorites"... NO MORE CHAOS... Crazy Notion I know, if you don't use it whose fault is that

Gonna check my favorites, Okay?

Bare with it..

wait for it.....

Guess what?

IT'S FUCKING EMPTY

So, Who is at fault now?

Is there a way to see ticket count before joining games? A few weeks ago I played and every CQ game I joined had tons of tickets. The only official servers I could find were only playing Rush.

There is NO WAY to know the ticket amount before you join the game.

Just assume all rented servers are 500% ticket games
