EA DICE withdrew nearly every official server from BF3 (PS360)

Wow, this is such bull. I just got this game, and thought I just couldn't figure out how to filter out custom servers..

Wow... Pisses me off because nearly every server seems to be 200% tickets or more. They take fucking forever to complete.

Exactly, holy shit Dice, way to be fucking idiots. I am enjoying this game, and will continue to play it, but I doubt I will bite on the DLC. =(

In my experience, most official servers suck ass. It's more likely to attract griefers, noobs or exploiters. There's never any sense of community as they don't have 'regulars' that show up, so it feels like a more disjointed experience.

At least, that was the case in the PC FPS games I have played. Maybe it's a different culture in the console world.

this is what you get for playing games online.

this what you get for playing games without good single player games and buying them only to play them online.

when the demand is so great for online services people will start to pay extra for it to have access to it because "that is the game."

I can't really blame them for wanting to save money when the community jumped on the server host program in a big way, but the fact that the Online Pass still exists in light of these events is very shady. Official servers and their costs were the initial reasoning for Online Passes, after all.

If they intend to continue with the abandonment of official servers on consoles, then they should make the BF3 Online Passes free for the foreseeable future, kinda like what Ubisoft did with the Driver San Fran Online Pass.

So what happens when the next big FPS release comes and interests shift resulting in the server paying crowd moving on to other games (wallets and all)? I assume they bring back official servers?
There would be little reason to bring back official servers. Typically the amount of dedicated servers online is proportional to the general demand of the playerbase. If there are no dedicated servers, it's for good reason: the playerbase has already abandoned the game.

The online pass is just an attempt to get a cut at used game sales, not for official servers.

People are paying to essentially switch an official server over to settings and map rotations that they would prefer to play. The main groups of people doing this are likely clans and communities who prefer to play together with settings they like, while having the ability to make some room for members of their group who want to join. Often, the cost is spread out among all members of this group.

With the huge success of the dedicated server rentals, it is likely that either all these servers were switched to rentals or had not enough traffic to keep them open.

This is something that has happened for many years on the PC front with dedicated ranked servers, so I'm assuming people who are all up in arms about this probably haven't played too many online, ranked PC games for too long if at all

Its a joke to defend this.. what happens when there are numerous fans remaining who play the game, but not numerous fans who are willing to rent servers? Basically they got rid of MM an forced payed/rented custom game servers to everyone instead. I bought this game based on the experience of predictable MM, and then had this custom server thing thrown at me. ( last time I played the game before I bought it was before custom servers). Seriously, I dont want to hunt down the rules I want, I just want to be able to hit 'rush' and 'quickmatch' and know I can play the game normally.

I don't recall this happening for any game that has allowed the rental of dedicated servers. Again, if there are no dedicated servers, it's indicative of the fact that no one wants to play the game anymore. In reality though, even if no one wants to play the game there will still be more than enough dedicated servers out there collecting dust waiting to be populated.

Edit: SMH at some of the responses in the thread. EA is screwing customers for "forcing" them to buy servers? So when that leader of a gaming community purchases a server so that he and his friends have a server they can always go to and tune to match their preferences is the definition of screwing the customers? A server made especially for them and runs 24/7 is just an example of EA screwing them over? If anything, the ability to rent servers just ensured BF3's longevity because now the players create the demand. If there are people still willing rent servers, BF3 stays alive.

If the game is fun and people still enjoy playing it, this is not a problem. Battlefield 2 is still thriving on the PC after seven years on purely rented servers, and people are still playing Battlefield 1942 from 2002/3. Clans are often the last hold outs in older games and keep servers running for years.

Unbelievable! Love BF3 but after the last patch if you search for a game (without browsing) the game put you only in user's server, like server with no respawn and other strange rules... so I start browsing server but is not so easy to run a normal BF3 game like developers intended.

I don't want to have kicked my ass out of the server because claymore is not accepted but you still have on inventory. I don't want to incidentally enter a game with no vehicles at all. i want the game i pay for and go to users server only if i want to do.

I want to write an article on this because is fucking terrible what they do withous tell us. Hope the official server back up soon because now is like a jungle. If i want a jungle i play on pc.

EA are just aweful, this must be able to reported to some business standards agency.

The fact you can't filter between standard n user servers is bonkers too.

Isn't the map pack due soon too???

Yes, the second map pack is coming but after internet confirm there's no official server anymore i want to giveup and skip this, fuck fuck fuck anyone who thinks this is a good idea. What a shame!

I haven't dug into the thread much, but I was under the impression that it wasn't that they removed servers, it's that they allowed all the standard servers to be converted to rentals, and EA/DICE have not bothered to add new servers? Is that right? (Which would make sense to happen over the lifespan of a game, but this fast and this completely is surprising. Especially since they're trying to put Battlefield and MOH up as COD killers, so much goodwill is lost by abandoning the official server support so quickly.)

WTF? This is such an inane argument. "when the demand is so great for single player games people will start to pay for extra DLC expansions". Just because people like online games and publishers are exploiting that trend, doesn't mean it's the fault of the consumers. That's like blaming abuse on the survivor/victim, although obviously much less serious.

Does it cost a dollar a day to have a dedicated server on the PC version?

Pretty sure they're cheaper on consoles. But you can also run your own if you have your own server and know how to set it up. All you'd be paying for is electricity in that case.

Also, EA not making it tough to stop supporting them in any way imaginable.

Haven't played BF3 in a while but I'm pretty sure you can't roll your own dedicated server. You have to rent one. A 16 player PC server costs around $25 a month bucks here (Sweden).

Wrong. There's no consumer server program for BF3, so if you want a dedicated server you have to pay for the service. That's the only way to get it.

Pretty much stopped playing since it became difficult to find a game with the same ruleset as the ones from the official conquest servers, this will probably be the final nail in the coffin.

I don't see what the big deal is. As far back as I can remember the majority of online gaming I've done on PC have been on servers run by the community.

The big difference is on the pc if you have the hardware be it a laptop or even a desktop you can make your own dedicated machine. I only advocate this should be the same for console players fuck using p2p uncontrolled long term. The tech is already there in terms of software they just don't give you access to it.

Really? That sucks, how come you aren't allowed to run your own?

Also how come they don't offer p2p matchmaking on the consoles as a last resort?

True. But the problem with this is a) you have to rent a server and b) there's no option but to run a dedicated server (impossible to have a player host a game).

I would assume EA get some of the money you pay the server rental company. There are some advantages to it though, such as reducing the problem with hacked servers and people fucking with stats etc.

Can't you just favorite decent servers on consoles?

You can do that if you are satisfied with something only "decent" and if you don't pay for a service like the guys who pay for Xbox Live.

So, what about this monthly fee, Microsoft? Is just for party voice chat? Fuck that. Gabe put that fucking portable pc under my tv, please, pleaaaaase do it soon as possibile!

I haven't ever found an official EA server among the thousands of user run dedicated servers I can choose from in Battlefield 3 PC. I want my money back.

Community can't run servers in BF3. You have to pay a company for hosting.

Also to ensure people aren't trying to run a server on crappy dsl/cable connections through improperly configured routers all while torrenting a movie.

*Kotick: laughs*

Amazing that I now feel Activision does it better than EA with their shooter fanbase. The tables have turned again! Wonder when they will flip-flop back to EA again. The cycle continues...

Activision are shit, but they've ALWAYS been better for the end user than EA. Always.

I suppose it doesn't matter anyway, since when BF4 comes out, they'll turn off BF3 multiplayer entirely to get you to buy the new game.

EA hasn't done this with a single game yet.

The only BF to be shut down is Battlefield 2: Modern Combat (360) and that was shut down due to lack of active players.

This
There should always be the possibility to play the game as it was intended with rules that are known to all.
