Early reactions to Alien: Covenant are in

I love Alien and Aliens and quite enjoyed Prometheus but I'm scared to watch Alien 3 and Resurrection.

Will I lose a piece of my soul if I watch them in preparation for Covenant?

eh, they're not amazing but they aren't *terrible.* They're worth watching as long as you don't expect them to be as good as Alien or Aliens. They're leagues better than the alien vs. predator movies.

Alien Resurrection is more or less the rough draft for Firefly

But with Aliens in it.

Firefly is at least self-conscious enough to play around with its sillier aspects. Resurrection feels like a comedy played completely straight. The lack of tonal cohesion is a huge part of what makes it so weird.

It depends how you watch them. If you approach them with a critical distance you'll probably find something worthwhile in them. Alien 3 in particular has the makings of a good film that was ruined by studio interference, so there are still a lot of good ideas and a few excellent scenes dotted throughout (the ending is pretty much the perfect ending to the franchise imo).

Alien 3 is better than Aliens, but you get killed around these parts for suggesting that :P
Resurrection is dumb fun, has some of the best effects in the series and the best alien design imo

David Ehrlich loved Fassbender and said the movie is messy but improved.

I generally trust him and that's a pretty positive look.

I glad the movie is getting positive reviews. Prometheus had such a great potential, but characters were trash. Still I enjoyed it.

My concern is, reading some of the early reviews, some of them sound to me like some Prometheus reviews. The fawning for Scott. The name dropping existential horror. The casual namedrops of Blade Runner and 2001 all over the place. The backwards shitting on anything not Alien or Aliens in the franchise without understanding why to score easy points.

I mean come on. I'm hopeful, but read something like this

https://www.theguardian.com/film/2012/jun/03/prometheus-ridley-scott-review-alien

And tell me you don't see similarities in the tone of review being taken vis-a-vis the product we got to Covenant.

Wake me when we start to get several gaffer opinions.

FWIW, Alien Resurrection is the first Alien movie I saw and it made me want to watch the three others. Today I still enjoy it a lot and I'm not sure I ever saw another movie quite like it.

I think I'll never understand the hate it gets.

I'm not sure it's better but it feels more in line with the tone Ridley set with the first and I love it for that. The three things that make it far from a bad film are Fincher's direction, the best score in the series, and an amazing opening and closing.

That final "Ripley, last survivor of the Nostromo... signing off" gives me chills every time I hear it. Definitely the perfect ending to Ripley' s story. She finally got to fuck the company back for fucking her. So poetic.

Prometheus was a beautiful shit, but shit nonetheless. Is Covenant is only a slightly better shit, I think I know all there is to know.

Can it be that these all positive reviews are because its a decent movie and not because its a well done entry for the franchise that doesnt fuck things up?
Because, as silly as it may be, the last thing is here far more important for me...

I'm sure not what you're say to trying ;)

I would take a average movie that doesnt fuck with the canon of the franchise over a great or good movie, that fucks with the universe.
I think, they only review the movie for itself and not that it has silly retcons in the vein of "Darth Vader build C3PO", because I am more interested in Reviews that put emphasis on that it doesnt fuck with the franchise as a whole.

the working title for this was alien: paradise lost. if prometheus had been more of a hit with audiences, im sure they would've just gone with paradise lost. this was always a covert prometheus sequel with some alien lore injected into it, so im not surprised with the feedback so far.

I don't think you saw my wink homie. I was just saying you mixed some words up there. Sorry, I'm a writer.

Prometheus can't be better than Resurrection simply because of this.

So 90s XD

This approaches Catwoman levels of cringe. Maybe that's also why I loed it. Cause I love pain. And it's also how I found out that I'm maybe a masochist. Would explain a lot, especiaaly the alcoholism and staying up past 5.

Fuck.

alien 3 is good, but I also liked prometheus so...

Same here. I actually thought 3 was great and have watched it many times.

Prometheus isn't as good but makes up for it by looking gorgeous. A gobsmacking beautiful looking film.

Empire - ***
It’s just a shame that one of cinema’s greatest image-makers couldn’t deliver his ideas visually. Still, as The Martian proved, Scott is still good at this sci-fi malarkey, be it the big stuff (the Covenant sprouting sails to harness power) or the telling details (alien atoms get highlighted in smoke rings).

Den of Geek - ***
Alien: Covenant’s problems only really begin to tell in the second half. While the movie doesn’t lose its coherency in the way that Prometheus did, the story does delve into similarly awkward, faintly kitsch storytelling territory.

'As for the horror aspects, there’s almost more than enough tension and gore here to satisfy fans of the franchise who felt let down by Scott’s previous entry. Both the Xenomorphs and Neomorphs in the film are downright disturbing, and the CGI is minimal in relation to both. The practical effects are downright disgusting, and watching people get torn apart is just as juicy as we all hoped it would be.'

From Bloody Disgusting's review. I'm so fucking in.

So

it's not great. 6/10

Promising til the close of the 2nd act with a total clusterfuck snorefest of a third act; too reliant on OTT shaky action cam and incoherent action - and the final act is even worse with a
incomprehensible closing door sequence with alien tunnel vision - which has zero tension considering we don't even know this ship - and ANOTHER fucking terrible airlock sequence

It's bad you guys. I wonder how its going to perform at the box office.

was so bored that final 20-30 minutes

Fassbender is the best thing about this movie.
It was quite decent til the end of the 2nd act

Good to see some discussion re: Alien Resurrection.
I enjoyed the "swimming Alien" scene, particularly where Ron Pearlman fires and hits one of the Aliens. I thought it was great to see the Alien being just as menacing in a different environment (water). https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cv7_7dSbaOk
The movie lost me at the "baby/offspring" stuff towards the end.Thought it was good until then.

Cant wait to see Covenant.

Hahah no. Alien 3 is a gorgeous mess. There's a good movie wanting to get out, and it's worth watchìng, but in no way is it better than aliens.

Alien 3 is a bit shit - fincher really fucked up the movie with his dull turd of a movie; and I personally hated what he did with newt+what'shisface's character. They deserved better.

It's literally a franchise killer with ripley dying at the end.

ressurection with creamy alien at the end is also terrible. It was decent enough in a "why are they making another Alien movie", but not Alien movie sort of way. Twilight Zone Aliens. I'd like to think the franchise ended at Aliens

The first impressions look promising. I'm looking forward to watching this before most of you all.

I don't mind if it's similar in tone to Prometheus. Prometheus was never problematic tonally, but in terms of script writing. It was fantastically directed, and had a fantastic tone and overall synopsis (What if god was just another biological entity and also fucking hated you?). The character writing, dialog, and connective tissue what what hurt the film. If this film can maintain the tone and directing while strengthening the weaker aspects I'll consider it a huge win.

I'm not the biggest Ridley fan. Alien is a bona fide masterpiece and one of my favourite films ever, but I think Blade Runner's pretty boring, I thought The Martian was fucking terrible...

Was so looking forward to Prometheus. Incredible trailers. In the end, some wanky entertainment that's a laugh but a load of piffle. Not too excited for this. Empire gave it 3/5 and they give every blockbuster 4/5.

Metroid?

Don't bother with Resurrection. It's utter trash.

Watch Alien 3 (the Assembly Cut) after you watch Covenant.

Assembly Cut of Alien 3 solves most of the complaints about the film.

Anyone who whines about it is just buttmad that Newt's actress aged so they couldn't recast her and had to kill her off. Stay hatin, haters.
