Elite: Dangerous Standard Beta (Starting Jul 29th - $75)

What content will actually be in the standard beta next week? Will most of the game be there with free roaming, trading and all or will it just be single missions and pvp?

It will have the content from the current premium beta (so free roam and all that stuff) but will also add tons new systems, the mission system, the fuel system, new ship (ships?), police system, new trade route tool, probably better trade mechanics and lots of stuff they haven't said yet/i forgot.

That sounds like quite a bit of content, thanks for the info :)

I seriously can't get over your label. Lol

"I have a very old Sidewinder flight stick I bought in 1999 for Allegiance. Will that work for this ?"

If it's a Sidewinder Force Feedback 2 or Precision 2, yes.

it's this one

I may still have it in storage ... I hope I didn't throw it out when I moved 5 years ago.

thanks, I appreciate the input.

At the time that stick was pretty awesome. I think I paid 250 for it which for 1999 me was a small fortune.

If you're really interested in the game you can get a cheap HOTAS system, the T-Flight X for around 40 - 50 bucks. Very cheap and very nice as well since you'll have a dedicated thruster.

Force Feedback Pro won't work, even with a (standard) Gameport -> USB adapter, I used to have one. You'd need to build some custom adapter like this.

I could have sworn my FFB came with a USB adapter. Am I misremembering, or is this ia special adapter? Let me go dig through my closet real quick and see if I can find it and post a pic.

EDIT: Found it:

I was the original owner of my Sidewinder FFB so I don't think this is from another controller.

Allegiance was my first (and only) space simish game. I suspect it may have been more arcadey than others? Although it felt sim like to me with the dozens of controls.

edit: I don't remember having that adapter with mine.

That's kind of why I'm asking. the plastic matches Microsoft's gameport design for the FFP, and has a copyright for microsoft on one side. I'm wondering where it came from, then. Is this just some sort of unique adapter from a super late rerelease of the stick or what?

Come to think of it, I don't think I've ever actually tried this adapter out. I still have the CD that came with my sidewinder and a pentium class PC with USB ports. I'll give it a go later on, as I'm about to head out to the lab for some work.

Im pretty sure as peoples will reach unexplored reaches of the galaxy that they will start to encounter alien races.

But how would you detect a Dyson Sphere? Its full purpose is to be stealthy, and if you managed to encounter a tier 3 civilization with a Dyson sphere, you probably wont be able to exit that system alive :p

The newsletter today (i hope) should be amazing, since beta is next week im pretty sure they'll start the hype machine.

Tier 2 *cough*.

Needn't be a full sphere, could be a swarm.

Need a couple of Mysterious Alien Artifacts - maybe a null-space bridge that switching on let's a Thargoid invasion in.

I have a Sidewinder from the earlier picture with the USB adapter pictured here. Works fine in Elite. I bought another stick because I want more controls accessible without using a keyboard, though.

edit: My USB adapter is colored differently. It doesn't look like Microsoft equipment.

You dredged up an ancient memory of mine now that I'm thinking about it. I vaguely remember seeing that adapter for sale at CompuCentre. I think USB was on track to becoming standard and they released that adapter around 2000 - 2001. Maybe even in 1999.

Lirik is streaming this right now, 12,000 people watching should sell some copies.

Game looks incredible, the hyperjump was amazing.

"The MS sticks while using a gameport were not standard analog gameport devices - ms overloaded the driver and communicated information digitally between the stick and the computer. A gameport to USB adapter WILL NOT WORK with them, unless it specifically states that it supports them. The exception to this is (possibly) the original 3D PRO, which could be switched to modes that emulated other era joystocks, but in so doing would "lose" the 8 way hat capability. "

I need to stay away from this thread. Every time I see it bumped I keep wanting to buy into the standard beta. I don't believe I can swing it. Or well I shouldn't try to swing it even if I can. However frustration with the state Star Citizen, and the wait I'll have to deal with (didn't know it was going to be so long when I bought in a few weeks ago. Should have done even more research.), is making me want to get into this to satisfy this desire for a space sim or just a good space game. Just constantly amazed by what I'm seeing of Elite.

Yes, I understand why a standard gameport -> USB adapter wouldn't work. What I'm saying is I don't think this is a standard adapter, and I'm reasonably sure it was included with my FFP.

How big is the map size at this point? Are there just zones in the beta?

Ok so this is a bit harder to explain but i'll try:

The "map size" is space. Like, all of the space they have unlocked. You can sit in a part of the unlocked space with absolutely nothing around you for hundreds of thousands of kilometers. The entire galaxy is the "map" at any time.

Now basically what the game does is create an "instance bubble" around your ship. Everything that enters this bubble is part of your instance. Your instance can hold 32 players (and no idea how many NPCs, tons of them) at one time. Say I just sit in space somewhere and by sheer coincidence you drop out out super cruise (getting to that in a bit) close to me. We are now in the same instance bubble and can interact. We might be 100km apart but we still exist in the same space.

Now of course the game needs to do some stuff to make it actually possible for you to get to places within your lifetime. Seeing how the universe is 1:1 that might otherwise take a while. XD
So what the game does is that there are star systems. And you can select them and use your warpdrive to warp to the star of the system. This is pretty much a few seconds of being in witchspace and then out you drop. When you drop out of warp, you are in what is called "super cruise". In this mode, your starship flies slower, at the or even faster than the speed of light and all planets, stations and points of interest in the system are marked for you. You can then fly to wherever you want in the system, trying not to overshoot (this can happen XD ). Once you are at a specific speed and range to a marked point you can drop out of super cruise and the game will kinda give you a hand and put you close to where you wanted to go. So say you dropped out at 800km from a space station you had marked, the game will drop you 20km from it cause it's impossible to do it by hand otherwise. You CAN however drop out at those 800km from the station, this is your decision. You can also drop out of supercruise at ANY TIME wherever you are and you'll sit there, in normal cruise in that exact spot in the system where you dropped out. Once implemented, you'll be able to use this exact system to "interdict" people in super cruise and pull them out of it to ...well do whatever you want with them. You can also meet up with other people wherever you want, doesn't have to be by a station or POI.

I hope this kinda explains it, if not, ask away and I will explain.

Thanks for the awesome answer. I'm really hyped for this game!

So once the beta starts, What will the price be?
Also is there a way to not buy it in pounds? Right now it's like 50 Pounds for me which works out to a huge amount using the local conversion.

Top right of the webstore you can choose payment between Sterling, Euro and Dollar.

I am so excited about tomorrow.

First ever HOTAS ordered and I'll be ready to be destroyed by better pilots over and over until I get the hang of it.

Bought in today for Beta and lifetime. Bit of an impulse buy given I'm not actually away from home for two weeks - anyway very interested in suggestions for joystick recommendations for the game if anyone has some.

Hopefully in two weeks I can download it and hop in.

Welp folks, its beta day :D I've got a feeling the F5 key will be smoking hot today.

Im really starting to think that whomever is going to make the |OT| for Elite dangerous will have to include a joystick purchase section lol.

I'll post a quick list from what i've seen suggested around Elite/sim forums, in no way did i experiene all of them.
Do you want to go full HOTAS EGM1966?

If not there's;
T16000M
Thrustmaster T-flight
Logitech extreme 3D pro
CH fighterstick

For HOTAS there's;
Thrustmaster T-flight hotas
Logitech G940
Saitek X52/X52 pro/X65/X55
CH fighterstick + pro throttle
Thrustmaster warthog

Depending on your budget, the solution can vary a lot. Its sadly not as simple as suggesting a gamepad.

Here's reviews for most of the available hotas,
http://www.simhq.com/_technology2/technology_094a.html

The page is for programmability comparison but you can select individual hotas reviews in the first page list.

In a few pages back i recommended the CH fighterstick + CH pro throttle combo, they can be had for roughly 200$. The saitek X52 pro is a cheaper alternative but its very hard to find now. Thrustmaster warthog is probably too expensive for just Elite.

A cheap alternative for HOTAS could be T16000M + CH pro throttle actually.

My goal in the beta is to buy the Viper MKIII. Oh hell yes :o~

Here's a list of things that will be in beta, from reddit.
Fuel
At least 50 more stars
Ingame Communication
2 ships (Viper and Lakon 6)
Friends List and Matchmaking
Trade route tools
Skins

I believe beta will now have offline/online universe too right?

I am guessing that when the switch is thrown, and friends lists become available, there will be a flurry of activity, including everyone trying to friend eachother.
Will there be a new thread for the new Beta?
If so, whoever makes it, would you be able to keep a running list in the op of people that want to share their commander names to be easily friended?
Assuming that you can friend other commanders by their chosen cmdr name of course.
