Elite: Dangerous Standard Beta (Starting Jul 29th - $75)

Then i used my 360 gamepad which worked absolutely fine and that's how I played the first three days.
Once I got my Thrustmaster X I would never go back to the pad though, unless I have to.

You have made my face light up! Probably get this after work and marathon this weekend....There goes detailing the STI.

Also is your X Stick or Hotas?

Thanks for this, was a cool watch. I heard you can hail other players on the mic?

Yes you can! If there are other players in your contacts, you can use the "select panel" button and move your view up where a little contacts/friends window will appear. There you can choose a ship and engage text or voice comms, add people to your friends list or block them.

Questions:

What is the game like in Single-player, or is it just a barren open-space? Do you come across any other characters or alien races..?

When is the final absolute done and dusted retail copy coming out, that has all the bells and whistles so to speak?

How do you open that spiffy galaxy map? I'm trying to find how but it's been useless to jump I need to choose the location from the UI menu then make the jump instead of using the map and plot routes.

It's on your left MFD, just above the list of navigation points it says GALAXY MAP.

:)

The game in singleplayer is like the game in multiplayer just without player controlled ships.
You meet all the NPCs, you visit the systems, etc... and your universe is still impacted by the multiplayer universes trading and it's machinations. You just literally see no other players at all. Alien races, well, one is confirmed, but they are keeping very very quiet about that.

The final retail copy comes out "Q4 2014". That is the base game done, all space ship stuff will be in that. Once that is out, they start work on their big expansion packs, which will be almost full game priced when they come out and add massive new features to the game like: first person walking in your ship/space stations/planets/bases,space walking/boarding other ships. Landing on Planets and exploring them, hunting animals, mining resources, building hidden bunkers for your cargo/ships.

this site right here http://elite-dangerous.wikia.com/wiki/Elite:_Dangerous_FAQ will tell you more than I can

hah went to store to try out the Thrustmaster - then I saw they had the X52 on sale for 95€ - I bit! Hopefully it's good.

I will be Commander Serrato.

I bought the game but i'm still waiting for my new HOTAS, next week.

See you in space guys!

Hold B+ Push Left D-Pad if on a controller, gets you to the MFD, or just click in the right stick and pan it to look around manually. It's under the Navigation pane, no System View yet.

Update 1.03 is out.

Fix some collect missions that are trying to talk about destinations - they now talk about the start locations like they should
- More guards against the ship not having a frame shift drive (which should be possible).
- Speculative fix for CTD on an open space scenario
- Handle more vertex buffers returning null
- Further crash guards for launch bay component
- Correct check before accessing details about the current target location. Would cash if the location you were targetting goes away
- Fix broken pointer in mission progression
- Fix for softlock on missions that involved talking to stations, not showing "objective complete" when you kill lots of people
- Send check codes for bounty and voucher requests
- Reduce server maximum packet size from 1500 to 1400 bytes as temp workaround for Mission BBS problems
- Log the response to the friends info request into the network log file, if VerboseLogging is 1 or more, to help track down failing to find friends online
- Distance contract calculation now take into account the cargo that they're about to give to you
- Send telemetry on player's match-making choice
- Avoid menu stickage when in time zones behind UTC
- Fix null crash in AI pilot receive authority change
- Mission details panel can now have multiline detail row labels (as well as detail row details)
- The focus bubble now eases between its min and max based on the current dolly value. This should allow for a softer selection of stars to view and less background/foreground clutter
- Moved the confirm (pad X) and auto (pad Y) bindings into the ui controls so they don't conflict with the galaxy maps crane (pad X) and home (pad Y) inputs
- Tweak of the system connections to differentiate the independent jumps from those that depend on your current cargo mass
- Add police tags to response craft, so that they can be killed and count as police kills in the missions system
- Fix a bug causing many duplicate sets of supercruise lines being drawn - it wasn't limiting the rendering to local players ship only
- When flying v fast in Supercruise, don't call UpdateIsland more often than once every 5 seconds (don't bother at all in Solo mode) - reduces load on server
- Reduce time server spends on clean up
- Fixed the Federal Staging Area in i Bootis, it's location was wrong. It's still a bit hard to find, but it should be in a much nicer place
- Filtering the top 5 trades is now done dynamically rather than being baked into the data
- Fixed outfitting menu showing base price rather than the server provided buyPrice
- Actually cache the value use to govern variable consumption rate of data when trying to smooth over multiple frames

Is there any way we can get a short list of recommended joysticks or ways to play this? Maybe entry-level and high-level. I definitely want to purchase a stick for this and I know there was a lot of discussion a few pages back, but I'm not really sure where to start, considering I've never used a joystick before in my life AND I don't want to drop a ton of cash on one.

damn the game feels great with a HOTAS, X52 paid off - i already modded it a bit so that it's not that sensitive (tighten the spring on the stick). Might jump into online now :)

I think they added an additonal tip on the delivery screens about how far you need to jump and how far your current ship can jump. I ran into that problem as well, but I hauled myself out of it with a shiny new Type6!

Entering a crowded spaceport with 400k credits worth of cargo is nervewracking

Heres the jump map for the type6

I figured out the cargo I was carrying was making the ship too heavy so the route wasn't showing up. If I dumped all but one ton I could make it. Still doesn't help when the mission is for 7 tons.

That should make some of y'all happy :)

I had that problem. What I did was sell all the cargo, jump to the location and find somewhere that sold what I was supposed to deliver, buy the required amount and deliver. Mission complete.

I think they need to fix the jump limits a bit still yet.

It's aggravating to be getting long haul missions in a hauler that you can't possibly complete due to the limits effectively making the destination unreachable once you have cargo

I can help you learn about the more popular low end setups, the crazy $500 high end stuff is way out of my league.

Affordable High End - Saitek X52 - $120 Supposedly the best you can get at a reasonable price. David Braben himself plays the game with this setup.

Lower End - Thrustmaster Hotas X Joystick + Throttle - $45 The cheapest all in one solution, never used it myself but I've seen some sick dogfighters on youtube who use this and have endorsed it with high praise. Probably doesn't compare to the X52 in build quality or responsiveness.

Thrustmaster T.16000m Joystick - $47 - This is the stick that I currently use, highly recommended by the community. It's an extremely responsive stick that will help A LOT with mobility and combat but not much else. The stick itself is great but the button setup on the base is terrible. I find that the best way to use this stick is with one hand on the stick, and the other on the keyboard. This works out perfectly since the flexibility of the keyboard gives you thrust control and complete control of all of ship's systems at any given time.

There's tons of other joysticks out there, but these are the ones that I'm seeing most commonly recommended for new players.

Just what I needed, thanks! This should be in the OP!

Standard mapping for the X52 Pro:

I'm really pleased at how the Saitek x52 Pro is natively supported, out of the box. Plug it in and elite immediately recognizes it and provides a complete button mapping by name. Even looking at the stick in-game, it appears to be modeled after the x52 Pro. I would say if anybody is looking for a no-fuss HOTAS, the x52 Pro really fits the bill.

If you have Saitek rudders, it'll detect that too and move yaw from the rotation of the stick to your rudders as well.

For the life of me I haven't been able to get the Engine Boost or Freelook buttons to work. The don't even register when I try to map the controls for Elite Dangerous. Everything else works fine though, so I'm 95% happy with my x52 pro.

I have freelook always on by default and just use the second coolie on my stick with accumulate mode.

Speaking of free look, the last update kinda fucked it up if you use the same hat switch for that and menu navigation, as I see is the default for the x52 pro. If you look to the sides and one of the panels opens, your view gets locked in place and the switch controls the menu instead of the camera... It's super annoying.

I didn't find a way to solve that in the controls menu. Any ideas?

yeah engine boost doesn't work for me either, and I think freelook is disabled if you're using VR in the first place so I never try the button anyways.

But everything else works as advertised.

IIRC, you have to go into the Saitek Software and change that button from a "Clutch/Shift" mode to an actual button mode.

I have a weird framerate "bug" (?)... wanted to see if I could hold a steady 75fps with the rift.
The problem: you can't see the framerate counter (ctrl+f) through the rift. So I tested it without the rift. Steady 60fps (my monitor is 60hz), but the moment I turn the throttle all the way down and "stand still" the framerate drops in the 40 and 30 range. The second the engine starts it goes back to 60.

BTW: If you can't read the text in the menus: mount your camera behind your monitor on the wall (above). I have it on the wall at an 45 degree angle. That worked wonders. The menu text is now HUGE.

edit: ugly image for illustration:

Anyone know how to move the framerate overlay (ctrl+f)? It sits in the top right corner, I need it like not in the corner for the rift. :lol

How do you guys get these damn things to stay put on the desktop?, all the ones I've tried have never been heavy enough and just end up sliding about.

It came with suction cups to attach on the bottom. As long as I don't jam the stick hard from one side to the other it manages to stay put pretty well.

I can vouch for this stick also. For the cost its great and accurate.
I use a keyboard too, but also use the buttons and dpad on my G25 shifter. Its clamped to the desk on the right of the stick and is ideal for stuff like deploying landing gear and jump drive etc. I also set up the shifter itself to engage engine speed %'s for lols :)

The more I think about this, the more it stays on my mind at work, the more I realize im watching the clock to count the hours until I can return to this, the more im confident that this has been my GOTY thus far. I havent been so wow'd and engrossed in a game like this in years. It is a satisfying leap of technology while also being an incredible game. I wish more people could try this out properly.

Seriously, you guys, where can i buy a hauler ? Tried googling, not much help, havent seen it around in systems either :/

I guess you already did i-bootis? Im not 100% sure but i bought mine (before last patch) in either i-bootis or Aulin.

Okay I think someone gave an explanation previously, but how do you tell where is the entry port in a Star Port?
